I suppose it'll be useful for some people, but I really can't see myself ever using it since I use the sidebar a lot for navigating, especially if I'm using a touchscreen. Having a slightly wider screen is negated in usefulness if I have to keep toggling the sidebar on and off to actually get around the site.

I'm also very worried about the future of widgets, since it seems they're definitely for the chop (despite being told a few years ago that they weren't going anywhere), I've not seen any users even remotely pleased at this prospect, and there's been no mention of what they'd be replaced with.

I quite like this for when I'm playing the games. Since I play with my browser at half screen the games get cut off. This is about the only time I'll use this as I rely too much on the sidebar for navigation.

I suppose it is better to ask you directly: are widgets intended to be removed/replaced in the future? I don't regularly keep up with staff posts, but I've honestly never seen it mentioned before this thread.

Yeah, I'd never use this button, even if I could see it (i'm guessing some of my CSS is interfering, maybe the clock or postcards).

I can see it being useful for very narrow screens.

But it reminds me that I'm really dreading the day when you do away with widgets and bookmarks. Stuff I use not just daily, but minute by minute while onsite. It will hurt more than the shops.

It only takes me to the news as well. I'm using Chrome and the hidden Luminaire theme.

Do any of you have a source for staff saying that they intended to remove widgets in the future? I searched Google and the admin posts from the past year and couldn't find a single post about this anywhere.

sorry no. I will say that I'm not positive on the widget thing - its possible that I am merely repeating rumors.

@ Jess https://subeta.net/forums.php/gotopost/60824231 https://subeta.net/forums.php/gotopost/61053969 Two of Bug's posts from the S&I forum, that I can remember. Both posts are from 2017.

I remember Keith bringing it up once too, waaay before Bug joined the team.

https://subeta.net/forums.php/gotopost/56374193 One of Keith's posts involving CustomCSS and the new layout. Mind you, that one's from 2014, and I have no idea if staff changed their mind about CustomCSS or not.

I don't know if there's been a change of plans behind the scenes regarding widgets or not, but I'm really hoping there has been more discussion on them beyond the initial "we're removing them 'cuz reasons".

[edit] Edited for formatting and brainfarts.

Thank you! I missed them because they weren't labeled as admin posts. I wish they were, that is pretty big news that everyone should be aware of. It's going to impact how everyone navigates the site so I hope they evolve into something much better.

posted her sources above. It's true D:

@ Jess No problem! Here's hoping they can find a middle ground because yeah... Widgets are mega-useful and I'd really rather not lose them entirely. :/

[edit] The only post of Keith mentioning widgets I can find was this: ">https://subeta.net/forums.php/read/824646/Friendly-Site/9/ From 2015, with Keith saying that he is not removing widgets and that he has no idea where that idea came from. :/ Something clearly changed in the meantime.

Pages 69+ are blank and aren't really worth looking past (imo)

EXTRA EDIT: ignore the ping. :'| I have no idea what the hell happened with this post.

Ah thanks. I had a vague impression of seeing something in suggestions and ideas, but couldn't be certain if it came from staff or just another poster. But I also remember reading stuff in news comments - which if I'm remembering right, don't show up in admin posts.

I would just like to know if this is where it's supposed to be located and what it's supposed to look like, cuz I'm not a fan of the placement. It just seems to out of place in a layout that is otherwise cohesive.

What I've noticed is if I click on the left hand side of the button it takes me to the news. If I click anywhere on the right hand side it hides and un-hides the sidebar as it should. I'm not 100% sure if I'll end up using it a lot, but it's a nice addition either way.

Oh! You're right! The left side of the button links to subeta.net. The right side actually hides the sidebar. I assume this is an error? Anyway thanks for the head's up, Zay! :D

Useful feature, though I personally will rarely use it - I use the sidebar too much.

I would also like to know what will happen to widgets in the new layout. I am hoping they will not be removed, because I use them constantly and would like them to be right there on every page I go to....

I wonder if it's possible to have the option to toggle disabled on petpages so that it doesn't affect the layouts? Right now if I view my pets with it toggled to be gone a few of my profiles are messed up. When I put it back, they page is fixed again. :? Like, I have no idea how to plan css around that?

First off, widgets will be removed in the new layout, not this one. That's pretty far in the future at this point. Right now we're just making tweaks to improve the current layout. Sorry for any confusion!

However, that is why we're not going to be working on new widgets or major widget updates.

You really don't need to worry about widgets/bookmarks being gone in the new layout, because it's a completely new layout - which means they will be replaced with something better. The new layout won't even have a "Toggle Sidebar" button because it won't have a sidebar. That doesn't mean it will have nothing, just that we are rethinking the layout and trying to find better ways to do what the current layout does.

But again, that's going to be way in the future at this point, so don't worry about it right now. There will be time for proper discussion/feedback on those ideas in the future, when we're actually working on it.

I made a post in the bug forums before I saw this, but ever since this was released, my pet profiles are broken, like the sidebar goes down the middle of the layout.Just had paid someone for coding a layout for me.:(
