I scanned the whole thing after reading a few lines, because frankly... None it makes sense.
The bandit NPC that appears one a day a year, has never had more than a few lines, and apparently did everything Because Stealing... Is actually a Heartwarming Foundling Orphan - adopted by our latest CS battle challenger, that've never been anything more than random monsters, who appeared to be nothing more than a random monster but can speak and is apparently part of a new race, no less - and kidnaps Melody Because Family, somehow? And now there's wall-of-text lectures about family and whatnot between me and literally the only thing we come to the page for?
My heartstrings refuse to be tugged. If I wanted Heartwarming Orphan Feels, I'd watch Oliver Twist.
This was adorable! Super unexpected and a wonderful surprise--always adore the lore additions to the site. (also, "son, no." pffffahaha)
they/them/theirs, please.
melody's an elder god? like, she says she's been around before the ice floes so who is she
I WANT TO BELIEVE
It can make sense if you just accept it as a new story. They're just using a mix of stuff that's existed on the site for a long time with stuff that's new, expanding on both to create some new lore for the site.
The battle challengers this month have all been based on myths and legends from the Subetan lands, except it turns out that the legends are not just legends but actually real (this includes the Fryst people, that Frystgaard is the leader of). Actually, the loot items that Frystgaard drops for getting 5 wins have some more lore in their descriptions, mentioning his people and at least one of their traditions to get their ice arms. They're supposed to be a group of people that lived in secret because they live in the coldest part of the Arctic Frost area that nobody really ventures into. Also it's not that uncommon in fictional/fantasy stories for things that seem to be "just monsters" to actually be intelligent but misunderstood because they look like big scary brutes.
Anyway, I think the story is supposed to be that Darkheart wasn't actually kidnapping Melody, she was visiting the Fryst clans willingly to give gifts. The kidnapping was the cover story so people wouldn't go looking for her and discover the Fryst people. But now because of Frystgaard's interactions with us in his battles, he realized we're not so bad and he's okay with his people being known about now.
It's just something to add some more lore to the site, because that's what a lot of people have been asking for (not necessarily this story and characters specifically, but in general). It's fine if some people just don't like the idea of this story, but I don't think it's fair to dismiss it all just because it came unexpectedly.
YOU HAD ME AT THE 'Son, no'. I have all these emotions. I loved this idea and thank you to whoever made it out!
I still want to know how the hell this will tie with Darkheart's actual canonical Subetapedia material.
come on, gimme more.
That was really unexpected but I'm always happy for some new plot pieces!
Although I'm not sure how spending our money to kick Frystgaard's butt just to get loot, with other words us being greedy, helps him to change his opinion about us to a better one.
I mean, we are killing him. An optional opponent. For loot, Yay us,
art by amazing
To be honest, I completely forgot that Darkheart Phantom had a Subetapedia article. Reading that, it does seem a bit strange. IDK maybe they'll just retcon some (or most) of it.
Being the founder of the SAI could still make sense though, since it's located up there in the Arctic Frost sort of area, but the rest of it doesn't entirely seem to match up now that I read it again.
That was a wonderful surprise to see when I checked Melody's Cottage. Character development ftw!

I'm a sucker for lore and character development so I liked this quite a bit!
For those like me who hadn't read it

The Darkheart Phantom (DARK-hart FAN-tuhm) is the former leader of the SAI, but currently the leader of a band of thieves working for Maleria.

Biography

In the blackest depths of night Darkheart Phantom strikes, breaking into the tombs of Shadowglen Graveyard and recovering relics of enormous value. Darkheart Phantom is a most dastardly demi that leads a band of grave robbers working with the Maleria in order to gain power.

Darkheart Phantom&;s true name and identity has been lost to the ebb and flow of time. There are tales, however, that speak of the young demi leader who founded SAI. This demi led SAI courageously through several years before a series of events, so dark and mysterious that no storyteller dares to relay that portion of the demi&;s history, started him down the path to destruction. A terrible power was welling up within him. It soon took such a firm grip on his mind that he could hardly concentrate on the events around him, let alone effectively lead a growing organization. When he was asked by the other higher-ups of SAI to step down as leader, the poor demi&;s fragile mind completely snapped. He showed no outward signs of his complete loss of sanity, but in his mind, he was now completely controlled by darkness.

The demi put on an appearance of calm and acceptance when he was asked to resign. He solemnly agreed and relinquished all power he held as the leader, and founder, of SAI. That night, however, the first and only break-in to occur at SAI Headquarters took place. A figure that was neither seen nor heard made its way into the records room, burning every single record relating to the founding of SAI and the demi who had breathed life in to the organization.

Darkheart grew to hate anyone who dared to consider him or herself good or righteous. He believed that the title of good was merely being used as a shroud to cover up the person&;s selfish ways. Darkheart&;s hatred soon grew into a vendetta and he did everything in his power to attack the forces of good, beginning by allying himself with Maleria. He soon began leading raids into the Sacred Lands, attacking such landmarks as Shinwa&;s Temple and the Oracles shrine. It was during one of the raids on Shinwa&;s Temple that Darkheart encountered Liara, the Princess of the Sacred Lands that had been shamed and banished by Shinwa. Liara despised Shinwa and the other goodly denizens of Subeta as well, leading the two to create a partnership that soon led to a relationship.

Darkheart Phantom continues his reign of terror and vengeance with Liara, the only person that he truly shares his life with, at his side. Together, the two of them plot attacks upon Shinwa and all of the Sacred Lands, determined to destroy the heros of Subeta once and for all.

That's the worst cover story any living creature could have come up with, ever. I'm not even exaggerating here. Like, just say she's taking a day off, do no disturb, thank - not 'Oh, I'm kidnapped, possibly in danger, don't come looking lol' which is... An invitation to come looking!
Also, how does beating him up convince ol' Frostpapa that we're good people?
To be completely honest it was just a bit tl;dr for me personally, especially because I go to the calendar after waking up while still in bed, so I didn't read anything of it yet, and probably will forget to do it anyways.
But I'm glad others enjoy it.
i thought this was cute. could it have been better? sure, but i'd rather staff try something new then leave us with barebones "darkheart bopped us with a brick again" shenanigans.
As for the battling thing, he mentions that he was letting us win so maybe he wanted to test our strength or something and it's less like fighting to the death and more just training match fighting or whatever.
I'll admit, after reading the Subetapedia article for Darkheart, it does make everything seem a bit strange. I still appreciate the attempt at incorporating more new lore, but there are some issues with the execution.
I do like the bit that mentioned though, that is a nice twist on the coal gifts.
I enjoyed the story, but as a battler... Let us win?
Lock and load, Galaxielle. We've got some battling to do!
:D
Edit:
The Subetapedia article was written a while ago, and there's been a big gap between Darkheart and Liara plotting together, and where we are now.
Liara is probably a frozen popsicle in the Polar Ice Fields now after the failed raid that left Darkheart broken and alone. SRY LIARA.
(Glad you enjoyed today's lore!)
