I've been reading through lines here and there and I'm unsure about the 'but children' argument. It is not necessary to spend real money to get this achievement and as a matter of fact, not everyone is into achievements or collecting them.
Personally, I won't stop hoarding my sP just because it gets retired or switched up. I am not even remotely 'in a rush' to get this achievement. I'm slowly but surely climbing the stairs, but I don't feel pressure nor 'poor' in this economy either. It can sound niche and snob but some people need different motivations to strive and achieve their goals. In fact, if it were to be retired, I'd be disappointed because I'm losing an opportunity (do I need to explain some complaining about retired achievements we've had in the past?)
tldr: I am real life money hoarder and I hoard my sP here. It won't change no matter what.
I would be very against retiring this achievement. It has been my number one goal for almost 8 years - to achieve this alone without group effort would be the ultimate achievement.
I knew from the onset that this would take many years so the question became how to chip away at it while pursuing other achievements and having fun along the way.
The answer is many faceted and I think in many ways my methods have been in the spirit of the game. Buy low. Sell high. Learn the site. Learn the community. Learn how everything works. So what other achievements to aim for? My first pursuit second to this achievement has been wardrobe related.
How do you fill your wardrobe if you don't blow every sP earned? To be honest, I would have probably proceeded in much the same way regardless of the richest user aim. It is how my brain works. It is the math geek accountant in me. The goal of richest user helped it stay a priority though.
So I figured out Subetalodge. I figured out wishlists and Subetalodge's lists. I worked on achievements primarily where reaching it earned you items - either wearables or items I could sell to earn sP for wearables. With or without my richest user aims I would have done this. I would never shell out 25million for an item I could earn.
Which led to other great things in the spirit of the site. It pulled me out of my shell. It encouraged me to PARTICIPATE - and so it began as a n00b at Luminaire 2008 time to always hit the advent calendar. 2009 saw the first zombie survival and I got real involved with biting and later at masquerade dancing. I hopped to it sharing flowers at Vesnali, so much trick or treating. I am one to watch a long time before participating but this made participating a priority.
And I ticked off achievements and had to figure other things out. I learned vending. Earning tokens. Figured out the games. Figured out FRAGGING - that was tricky. And then a couple years ago figured out the Subeautique! Figured out pinging - that would never have happened otherwise I bet - well probably but it would have taken a year or two longer I am certain. Figured out groups. Figured out BATTLING! That was huge, and now my sweet Breeze is a tier 11 and a force to be reckoned with.
For a long time I had more achievements than posts but it eventually switched as I did more dancing and flowering and kissing and I got to know some people as friends here. I even made a coupe of semi-real friends here. I have two I keep up with on Facebook thanks to this site, very good friends.
And then, I got my full wardrobe. So what next? Well I love food. So my next most secondary aims - gourmand. Ooh and I'm all over the place now, but - figured out: Blue building, the carnival! Got my pets jobs and career advancements. alchemy points, my Breeze has read a lot of books - all in the name of furthering battling (for fun too of course) to help me get battle related achievements and the wearables I could earn - or cool weapons for I really like battling at this point. Or to earn items I could sell of course.
Figured out GAs, auto pricing, how to fund having a GA in a way that didn't kill my first aim. Figured out the donation center, giveaways, discount sales threads...
And still, as I chip away closer to this goal, I have a heart. I have found a lot of joy in random anonymous gifting when I see someone new or very kind. Though it seems anti-richest-user at first, giving is a joy. Although in the spirit of my first aim I often seek to gift items not by shelling out 5 million sP but to find upon their wishlists an item I earned at some point and have - so some wearable from an event 5 years back in my wardrobe, wizard tokens, quest point items - for that was another thing I figured out...
And now I am rambling but
TLDR: please don't retire the achievement, it would crush my spirit. Chasing the achievement and playing the long game helped me learn many areas of the site and aided socializing myself. And also - I wouldn't spend all my sP or alter my behavior if it were retired. I would just be sad.
EDIT to add I personally dislike the 1% idea
I like the idea of having to reach a top percentage rather than being the overall richest user. I expect most users aiming for it would spend a lot of their sP after reaching that goal, and there are plenty of sinks to throw it at.
If the unlock conditions can't be altered, let's just lose this incentive to hoard sP.
So far the staff don't appear to be supporting this idea (unless they are silently discussing it elsewhere) and I am grateful for that.
Those of us actively trying to get the achievement know the current RU has barely banked any SP in the past several months - making it closer than ever to be honest.
It gives us motivation, gives us goals, keeps us playing. Multiple people have already posted this is their motivation to keep playing. And others whom have already earned the achievement state they still hoard (and others I know as well whom have earned it and not posted, also don't spend often).
So really, the argument to retire it isn't all that valid.
I cannot see the site taking away something that brings activity to the site. (Let's be honest, I am about 90% certain I would leave as well). It just...keeps us chasing the dream! :D
Bug has actually said he'd be on the side of retiring it; staff may be discussing it. I dunno.
I would like sound reasoning posted from a staff member behind retiring this achievement, that isn’t about hoarding sP or hypothetical minors spending real money.
I get that sP inflation is a big problem, but I do think a bigger part of the issue is how the CSC system is handled by this site.
Also, we have seen item hoarding discouraged but also rewarded so many players will disregard any calls to keep less sP.

Ignoring the (obviously false) rumors (because just how COMPLICATED it'd be to program a shop to make it work like real life and make the rich even richer anyway), I'm in for retiring this achievement. I may not even be on top 1000 richest users (I'm ), but honestly? It feels like all the hoarding to try to achieve it is actually causing quite some harm to the Subetan economy.

I have no opinion on keeping it, it's never been a goal or concern of mine. It exists, but it seems kind of stupid in concept, especially if it encourages people to hoard instead of spend.
It seems a bit odd to me that people would only play / only "keep playing" for the sheer sake of a single achievement/title. Maybe that's just me? I mean, you do you, I suppose.
(52 billion. Geez.)
I'd love to have the achievement someday (realistically probably never) and don't see it doing that much harm. People are still going to hoard sP. That said, if it retires I won't die. I've never done any serious push for it and don't have the relationships or collat to do the pooling/lending really anyways. Most people who want it are probably more in that type of boat than any other.
My concern is how it works now that accounts don't really 'clear'. I presume it only looks at active accounts, but is that window 1 yr? I really feel like it could be lower (to make it more obtainable, by not counting essentially 'dead'/'dying' sP) without doing any harm. Anyone 'going for it' is both A. active, at least when they finally do it and B. benefiting from the lower number too.
Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to double check that any inactivity filter is in place and working. Shit like that's been silently completely broken in the background before, more than once.
The Title Collector in me wants that achievement, but I've been spending everything I have on pet slots so I'm broke as heck and there's no way I'm gonna actually be able to save to even 1 billion. ._.
But the temptation is always there... so... idk. Part of me feels like the title may have been easier to secure for the richest on the site from back when the daily bank interest was still a thing, but that's just a theory of mine.
As for retiring it... idk. x_x Most of us devoted players won't be able to get it, but that might have been the intention from the beginning. ;_;
I disagree with retiring it. I don't really think there's any evidence to say it does or does not harm the economy. While people may be holding on to sP, and not spending as much, they also have to generate sP thus need to actively sell items; supply is equally important to demand in having a healthy economy and big ticket items always tend to be the most stagnant. The achievement could help to motivate this.
I’m the wicked witch/grinch this year and I say retire it ASAP! I lost my item hoarder achievements and now you can lose your sp hoarder achievement too! All of your arguments could also be said for item hoarding and those where still retired, so princess bride old crone voice booooo, boooo! Humbug! Grinch noises!
Joking aside I’m neutral. This will not effect me either way, if sp hoarding is a problem then staff can do of it what they will, if not I hope it can remain a thing people continue to have fun with. High tier, long term challenges can be quite fun and no new ones have been added recently that I remember. Happy holidays!
I think keeping it is just fine. It hurts nobody by existing, and gives people a goal to work towards
Please be patient! I just got back and im lost, confused, and a little hungry.
I'm definitely against retiring this achievement. I get why people want it retired, please don't think I "just don't get it", I just don't agree with their reasons.
Not everyone is into achievements. I didn't used to be and even now I'm still not obsessed with them but I hate to see any achievement retired unless it's for a one-time event or something. They're fun and easy enough to ignore if you're not into them. Most achievements just give you titles or a congratulatory message. How many people really pay attention to forum titles unless it's something funny?
If you're going to argue that the achievement is "impossible" now, well, it's not. Besides, if it's retired then it's definitely impossible so, uh, you really want that?
There's nothing even wrong with hoarding wealth on Subeta. It's not like irl. sP is endless, lol.
Anyway, I sympathize with people's frustration but I don't agree that it should be retired. If you don't like the achievement just... don't go for it? It existing doesn't affect you. Even if it was retired I'm sure the people who enjoy the challenge of saving a ton of sP would create a forum group or thread to keep track as an unofficial achievement. People are still gonna hoard sP and it will continue to not really affect anyone else. Again, it's not like there's a finite supply of sP.
Not a single ounce of support. The user doesn't have 52 bil sP because they were going for the achievement, they have it because nothing was eye catching enough for them to spend their sP on. It would take me years to reach and that's assuming they don't earn anything else. I don't think it staying hurts anything and most of the support for retiring it is.. "well it's just impossible so it might as well not exist". It's not impossible. It would take a crap ton of work, but how dare an achievement be really hard to get, right?
And as a comment on the "MC rumor" that was on the first page.. I remember that rumor going around like 10 years ago. I have no idea where it came from but it seems to pop up every few years and the staff always shuts it down but it never seems to die lol
I wouldn't mind it being retired because there's no way I'll ever get it and it would feel good to have it off my list of things that make me competitive. However, I would want another way to get the forum title (and other retired titles), and I also don't want the wardrobe achievement retired just yet (unless you have another way to give out the titles from that too). The wardrobe achievement is much easier to do though because you're not competing against thousands of other users.
First of all, big oof. Y'all just necroed a thread that was 2 years old.
Second, I don't really have an opinion on retiring the achievement or not, but I don't believe that's true. If I've heard correctly, the richest user has 52 bil sP because a group of users got together and pooled their sP to specifically get the Richest User achievement. I dunno exactly what happened, but I guess the money was never returned and the richest user has now just stayed at that unattainable level ever since.
Just noticed the original date, nvm.

Disagree, sorry.
I literally just noticed my ranking and was intrigued by it; it's giving me interest in a goal to work towards!
Sounds like a group of users coming together on an otherwise dead forum to work towards a common goal and chat with one another...I don't see how this is an argument on why the achievement should be retired?
In real life, one person having mass amounts of money can tip the scales unfavorably when real problems like starvation, medical issues, homelessness are real; however, this is a virtual game. Someone having tons of digital points they got from little digital games and quests hurts no one. Let them have their achievement; it's a goal keeping some people playing, I'm sure.
edit: omg, just noticed this was a necro, sorry! Last 5 posts I saw were from this month and I went off that. x.x
