I read it a long while ago and don't remember exactly everything it was about, but mostly a fantasy country and the government of it and the surrounding countries and the different magic systems they have and conflicts between people. There's a sneaky criminal element and royalty and people from other cultures and a seemingly evil curse that maybe is a symptom rather than the real problem. It's not really what it's about, but how it happens that makes it good - and the characters and their relationships.

Oh no :( I'm sorry for your dad. That really sucks. There's probably some companies out there that would appreciate all his experience and knowledge. My uncle's job got rid of him after he got hurt on the job (it was someone else's fault he got hurt) but he got a better job eventually! I'll think of your family and send good vibes.
