Each gray box at the start represents a weapon or spell slot. You click each box to bring up a menu with your options, and then clicking one fills in the gray box with your selection.

This may be the first change to battling that I like. haha. It's different, but it fits with what I do, so it makes me happy. It'd be nice if there was a way to choose the layout for people that prefer the old one/more visual one over this one.

As an aside, I wonder how this is going to affect the site wide battle events, since it makes it so much easier for everyone to mindlessly beat on something though? I suppose that it will make it more 'fair' since you could edit things before, but you had to actually know how to do that. eh. We'll see.

It makes battle quests very easy, but I can see this being a pain for my other pets, especially Oranos, where I am taking on new opponents and really need to focus on strategy. It's easy to click though for weapons and it automatically toggles between weapon one and weapon two once you make a new selection.

The text for scrolls and potions do make it difficult. Verdugo doesn't use potions so much, but Oranos relies on selecting the right shards and potions for new opponents so scroll through potions and scrolls is a lot more tedious for pets that are still going up in tiers and fighting new opponents.

I do still find it cramped but I am slowly getting used to it I guess after doing Battle quests. I think they could make the battling images a little smaller and then maybe it won't feel so cramped? I fill like everything was just squished to the right side of the screen and my pet looks huge.

many revisions :) This is just the very first draft! I care and am thinking over everything being brought up. I'll be doing my best to refine it (and the battle game in general) into the best it can be!

Will respond more tomorrow, as I am quite exhausted right now.

Precisely. It's hard to use when the challenger gets tough. Which is exactly when someone like me is already at their limit if I want battling to be any fun at all.

Yes!

Here, I'll have to disagree. It might feel less cramped. But my problem is that I need things to stay larger and more spread out in the first place.

Just tested in with Oranos and so far the biggest issue (aside from not easily seeing what scrolls I have left and what potions/shards/pylonics) I see for him is having to scroll through to the bottom of the text window to see how much damage he is dealing, how much damage my opponent is dealing and how much my opponent is healing for. I like to see how much damage I am averaging and how much my opponent is healing for on average so I can have a good estimate to how many turns I have left in the battle. I find myself having to scroll more to see the damages and healing.

On the positive side, I flew through my battle quests tonight and it didn't feel as tedious as it used to! There are some things I really enjoy about the new layout:

  • Easier to select a weapon (meaning the actual clicking on a weapon. I used to always struggle with the checkbox, or accidentally wishlisting a thing, or highlighting stuff and not being able to click anything)

  • Move through easy opponents quickly when all your battlesets are configured right

It's mostly when the opponents begin to take multiple rounds that I start finding things I'm not so sure whether I like better:

  • Because weapons are autoselected, I sometimes missed whether the round took place if I wasn't paying close enough attention to when the page loaded. It's obvious enough if health bars or curse/blessings changed, but not so much if there was minimal change.

  • Far more scrolling to check just how much damage/healing I did and my opponent did.

  • Drop-downs for scrolls. In harder battles I choose a different scroll nearly every round, and using a drop-down was more work.

  • Mixed feelings on the autoselect. With the way you can swap weapons without unselecting one, this sometimes was still pretty quick even if I was changing a weapon. Other times it unselected the weapon I wanted to keep so I ended up playing weapon roulette until I got the pair I actually wanted. To borrow on one of the comments made above, perhaps your set could autoselect for the first round based on position and then for every round thereafter select the weapons used the last time?

I like the update. Not fully in love with not seeing what scroll element I am choosing until I pick it. Same with the potions but I can get used to the lack of constant lag. I hit one spot but a refresh quickly cleared it. Unlike the usually lag that I am fighting always between rounds. It's an improvement so I am not complaining until I get used to it fully.

Thanks both of you! ^_^

Overall, I found the new UI much better than the existing one. Great job on the redesign!

Just some commentary:

  1. It's really easy to use when most of the turns use the same weapons. It reminds me of one-click vending. Is that a good or bad thing? xD

  2. The ability to select no scrolls or potions is a welcome change. You don't have to worry about clicking them by accident anymore :) It will also be convenient to stack them, as mentioned.

  3. It needs a decent resolution to have a good experience. Otherwise, the Arena section and its text below will get narrowly compressed.

  4. IMO a minor thing, I prefer the curse and blessing images non circled.

A suggestion to think about, what if the battle text and next turn section are overlapping tabs in the bottom? It would make better use of space, however I'm not sure if the layout would be well received (in addition to a possible additional click to bring up the "next turn" tab). The damage and healing amounts can be outside the tabs if someone thinks battle text is TL;DR.

- yes, you have to scroll for damage amount which is more work. And, in my case, I have to scroll to see battle text, weapons, icons dealt and defended - all that stuff you and the other battlers have been teaching me to pay attention to in order to improve. (sigh)

[edit] Fighting Surge in BQs - totally forgot I now have a Perilous Whirlpool Scroll because I can't see it if it's not my main selection (sigh).

Also - I keep having to change my weapons (and it is often 3 clicks to get the right pair, not just 2) plus, I have to stop and scroll if I want to know what happened and how much damage and/or healing I did. Disliking this more and more ...

So I got through all the easy BQs fast. But when I got to Surge, it takes me multiple tries to beat him. I have often taken as much as a hour (and have sometimes spent more than that) to get from Level 20 to Level 25 (if I get that far) BQ. Now it's going much slower. I have never quit against a challenger I know I can beat - no matter how long it takes, but I don't know if I'll be able to keep that up now.

You still had to scroll in the old setup, but the battle screen is definitely more compressed now so it's hard to see all the icons your opponent is dealing at once and if they are using any boosting weapons.

I cant say I'm a fan of the overall changes honestly. I had my items organized in a specific way so I could reach them easily and knew by memory where to click on the page. While it isn't as much of a problem with weapons, I do not like the scrolls at all.

I do not like how cramped everything is now and the cutting off of the curse/blessing images bugs me because there was no need for it. Now I can probably get used to everything being on the right but it still just seems weird. I also do not like having to scroll to see damage and healing. Before with my 1440p resolution I could see the whole screen at a glance. If the scrolling has to stay, I would much rather have the damage and healing moved to the top instead of bottom.

Having to click then scroll down then find the scroll you want via text is a LOT more time consuming than just clicking a memorized picture. I play with a mouse but I honestly couldn't imagine using a trackpad on a laptop to battle, it would be so tedious. I don't think changing the colors here will be enough of a visual clue, we still need to read the scrolls and we still need to click on a drop down menu.

- I changed my zoom so I very rarely had to scroll - now, if I do that, I can't read anything at all. :-)

And, now I can't tell what resources I have, since my scrolls and potions are all hidden in those dropdown menus.

Yes. I don't have 1440 resolution, but I was able to do the same thing by battling at a lower zoom. For me, seeing everything all at once makes a big difference in being able to decide what to do for the next turn.

[edit] I have figured out part of why this layout makes me so unhappy. It's not just the scrolling. Before, when I was thinking furiously trying to figure out what to do this turn to try to beat Surge (he's the hardest for me, so using him as my example) I could see everything all at once. I could see the health bars and my weapons , potions and scrolls all on the page, as well as the results of my last turn's choices and what blessings and curses were cued up. So I could then analyze all that information to make my choices. Now I feel like I'm flying an unfamiliar airplane with a blindfold on. Even just to see my health and my weapon choices I have to look back and forth. That's not too bad when things are relatively easy, but when I'm repeatedly fighting a challenger about at my limit (or even a little past) it's just one thing too many and I find myself not able to make choices as well as before. Again, this is not just a simple lack of familiarity with the new layout. It's not going to get better unless there's a way for me to once again have all the information visually present at one glance.

First, thank you for the changes. I didn't expect to wake up to the news. What I like about the change is that it speeds up the loading. I do hope if future changes are made this would be maintained.

However, much as I appreciate the intent and effort, I'm with many people here in not being fond of the new layout. It doesn't feel intuitive to me, or suit my battling style. I can live with the pre-selected weapons as long as the others aren't greyed out, though I would much prefer the old way because I tend to have a universal battle set that I use for everyone up until level 25. However, the order of the weapons I use for them starts to change around Level 21. As I battle, I know I would form reflexes and habits, and I really don't want to lose to an opponent due to heavy reliance on habits and reflexes, which I'm sure the option of pre-selecting weapons and scrolls will form for me.

The second drawback of the new layout for me is, as others have pointed out, the dropdown menu for potions and scrolls. Before, I need just one click to select a potion and another for a scroll. Now to do the same I'll have to do two clicks for each dropdown list. If on paper the pre-selected weapons feature is supposed to make battling faster and reduces clicking, this one defeats the purpose. I wouldn't like the alternative offered of assigning colour codes for different scrolls or potions, since I go by visuals not texts. Assigning colour codes still treats scrolls and potions as texts, and the process of selecting them still takes two clicks no matter.

The new layout also assumes that battling is done on a full-screen window. I always battle with half-screen windows and look at guides, or take notes for myself on another separate windows for a new opponent. The new layout makes this more difficult for me to process information as I test weapons or note down an opponent's icons or gimmicks.

Before, I can speed through BQs in under 20 minutes, even when I still had trouble with Crawbeast and Prodigy. The old layout allowed me to select a weapon, hit enter, then I was done with most battles 1 through 20. I finished L21 to 30 in a similar fashion: clicking three times for weapons and a scroll with a mouse (or for Lv21-25, no scrolls at all), then Enter. With the new layout, BQ-ing takes longer for me, since I can't use the Enter key anymore, and it inconveniences me a lot.

I'd much appreciate an option to set layout to vertically aligned (like the new format), or horizontally aligned (like the old one), the option to turn off pre-selected weapons, and most importantly the ability to use Enter key again for the submission of my turn. The way I imagine it, the potion and scroll sections would be displayed visually like the old layout, just under the weapons box, and perhaps the Submit button can be both at the top and bottom of the Turn box.

ETA I also don't find it necessary to repeat the image of selected weapons below the weapon box. I'd rather use that space for visual representation of potions and scrolls instead.

Alright, now that I have tested out a battle against a weakling, this is what I noticed: If I don't want to go by the pre-selected weapons in my default set, let's say Weapon A + Weapon B, but want to use Bomb + Weapon A instead:

  • Clicking on the Bomb will automatically deselect weapon A, while keeping Weapon B
  • Clicking on Weapon A with the thought that it will confirm my choice, will also deselect this weapon instead So there is room for error here where I can click on the Bomb assuming it will replace Weapon B, and I will speedily make a turn thinking I'm doing it with my desired combo because Weapon A is already pre-selected, only to end up with Bomb + Weapon B instead. Against some opponents this can be good or costly.

[edit] I actually used a custom code to do something with the battle text, scroll and potion section and had to do almost no scrolling at all.
