What happened with the Memorial
I'm humbled by your outpouring of kindness and sympathy, so I see I wasn't as forthcoming as I should have been about this memorial service. Let me fill you all in:
Friendships get started in weird ways. This was the case here. These lovely people own and operate arguably the best restaurant where I live, and clearly one of the best Thai restaurants in the area.
We had always been on a friendly owner-customer basis, but one night just before Christmas, hubby went to order while I combed our local CVS for the perfect "grandbaby" gift. I found it--a small child crawl-in playhouse that could be painted outside by said child. It was even on sale! There were only three left, so I grabbed one fast and lugged it into the restaurant to get the car keys from hub.
Well, May saw it and was overjoyed. It was perfect for her youngest daughter. She said she'd get one when she got off or the next day. They weren't going to last that long, so I turned around, ran back to CVS and bought another. It cost about half our dinner check, but she and her husband insisted it was even, and we moved solidly from customers to friends.
Over these last happy years, we've seen her whole family serve great food to lots of satisfied customers, and then we cheered the kids as they moved on to careers. There was a lovely girl originally from Canada who worked there too, and who learned to love green curry. She went to school while she worked at Trader Joe's because she dreamed of having her own food truck; May's sister's oldest son got a broker's license; and May's oldest son, Danny, went in computer programming. They had two other very close friends who went everywhere with the three of them. They were the Five Musketeers, inseparable, joyous, and full of life.
As a fun thing for the end of summer, they all decided to go to the Grand Canyon and watch the sunrise. Danny, up for an internship with Samsung, declined in order to get the third leg of his project done, since the first two had passed with high marks. So the other four went off and promised to take pictures.
And then this happened:
<p>FLAGSTAFF — A 19-year-old Casa Grande man has been indicted on multiple counts of manslaughter after he allegedly crashed into a vehicle while driving the wrong way on Interstate 17 last month, killing four people.</p>
<p>The Coconino County Attorney&;s Office has obtained the indictment against Carlos E. Quinonez, charging him with four counts of manslaughter, four counts of endangerment, one count of criminal damage and two DUI counts.</p>
<p>One of the DUI charges alleges Quinonez had been driving with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit of 0.08.</p>
<p>Authorities say Quinonez was driving a Jeep on Aug. 18 in the wrong direction when he collided with a Nissan traveling in a northbound lane of I-17, south of Flagstaff.</p>
<p>The four occupants inside the Nissan all died. They were identified as Christen Ebert, 26, Richard Chum, 30, Gary Sindhu, 29, and Kouang Saefong, 30. All of the victims were from California.</p>
<p>The four friends were on their way to the Grand Canyon but they never made it there. The victims were on a journey to“discover something beautiful,”according to comments left by a friend.</p>
<p>Newspaper archives indicate Quinonez graduated from Vista Grande High School in 2016 and played on the school&;s varsity soccer team.</p>
<p>The defendant&;s charges range between Class 2 felonies and Class 1 misdemeanors. Some of the felonies have been classified as“dangerous" offenses, which carry longer prison sentences. If convicted on all counts, Quinonez could face combined, presumptive sentence of 50 years under Arizona law. The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office said Quinonez is currently not in its custody.
Yes, he was drunk. It was his third DUI, and was driving about 90mph without lights on. No, there wasn't enough left of any of the four to have anything but quick cremation. Perp is being charged, but, of course, he's an awesome soccer player--you know the drill...
The whole family went into shock and grieving, but Danny got hit with "survivor guilt," and it didn't do much good to tell him he would only have made it five victims instead of four.
Family finally got themselves together for a memorial service. It's a difficult time for them, so they need all the support they can get.

(((hugs))) , what an incredible loss, as an angel mom I know the trauma the family is going through, True friends is what kept me going, trying to come to grips with living while my child was gone. I can give you some great advise as a friend how to help with the long journey they will have ahead of them. My daughter was 26 when she died 5 years ago. It doesnt get easier, you just learn ways to coup with the new life you now lead..

that is so sad. I feel horrible for the families... And poor Danny, did I read correctly that one was his cousin? There is a reason he didn't go, he has bigger plans ahead.

There are no words for something like this. I am so sorry for all of you. Sadly, I wasn't surprised that it was a drunk wrong way driver, there have been so many incidents every time I visit my sister in Phoenix.

- such a sad and needless tragic loss of four young lives. So sad this happened to your good friends. Many years ago a coworker lost his high school age daughter. She and three friends were just walking back from an event when a drunk driver drove into them killing all four of the girls. Drunk driving is a major problem and it truly upsets me that this sort of thing is still happening despite anything being done to stop it. Alcohol and cars do NOT mix!
My condolences to you and the family and friends. And may the memory of those four young people be a blessing.
