I would think the opposite, if you are so close to the southern border MORE people would speak Spanish, no? When I was a kid in Miami I was fluent. My school was half day English, half day Spanish. I learned Math in Spanish !

Its only true for some people my age and above. Most second and third generation people only know profanities or "una mas cerveza" , the dumbing of age. Only my one of my nieces can speak some Spanish, the rest are too young or just forgot. The same could be said for older generations, their understanding is almost as limited.

I've just learned to tolerate that, and go on speaking with whatever style I can.

There is a huge Russian population in Israel, you could practice just about anywhere here. :) Less Spanish speakers around, at least where I live.
