That was unexpected.

Those were bhakorus.

I think that was butterface.

They look at Blake, perplexed.

… From the Sacred Lands. There was a mural showing a woman but her face was broken. Everything was perfect but her face. Butterface.

Kahaleitzli

… Classy.

What does this mean? I get two maps from an unknown sender... An ancient temple in the desert and an ancient tomb in the jungle, both with a forgotten pet species living inside, and both with a depiction of a mysterious woman? It can’t be a coincidence, right?

Kahaleitzli

Quote
I’m sure it is. Perhaps the Bhakoru were the pets of the nobility in the past - I hear they are a very long-living species, and such a creature would be an excellent gift. To my knowledge, our island history doesn’t mention the bhakoru, but history tends to be a bit light on the favourite pets of a sovereign. I’m sure this statue was a guardian golem for some island queen, nothing more.

You’re probably right. I’m just seeing connections because it would make a better mystery. Hey, user, who don’t you check out that central room now that the dust has settled?

Steel

Quote
...Well, okay, it’s another giant crystal. This can’t be a coincidence.

Saggitarius

Quote
You discovered one just like this when you visited the Sacred Lands…

Steel

Quote
How many more temples like this are out there in the world? Are there hidden shrines to Butterface all over Subeta? And what does this crystal do? The last one has some kind of power that allows pets to be transformed into bhakoru, could this one be the same?

Elwood

Quote
Make the user touch it.

Steel

Quote
Dude, that’s not cool, what if users ends up as a bhakoru?

Elwood He shrugs

Quote
Eh.

As I approach the crystal, the air seems to get warmer, and everything around you crackles with some unknown energy. It’s not like electricity, it’s something less mundane than that. As I gaze at the crystal, pondering my options, I'm lost in the swirling colors of its surface. A moment too late, I break from the trance to realize that my hand has moved to the crystal and is pressed against its smooth facets.

For a moment, nothing happens. The crystal is warm under my hand and hums with that mysterious energy, my fingers tingling in a way that is neither unpleasant nor totally comfortable. Then, suddenly, the crystal surface grows cold under your touch. Something isn’t right.

Steel

Quote
What? What did you do?

A rumble shakes the island, debris raining down from the ceiling of the ancient temple.

Matlal

Quote
VOLCANO!

Kahaleitzli

We must leave immediately!

Everybody leave the tomb. Outside, the mountain isn’t smoking. However, ominous storm clouds have gathered, and from your high vantage point, I can see the coastal waters churning angrily. The village! I should get down there as soon as possible. You will take the most direct path down the mountainside, but it will still take time!

I’m worried about what could happen with Saggitarius, or maybe the disguised person as him. (other users may worried about what would happening in the village or with Matlal). but I stay focused on my task: charting a safe path down the steep mountainside as quickly as possible is your main goal.

I’m making good time on my journey down the mountain. I’m should arrive in the village by morning.

I try to put some worries out of my mind - there are too many hidden stumps, holes, and fronds of toxic plants in the jungle to lose my focus.

I still wonder what Saggitarius meant what about a same christal in the Sacred Lands but I have to focus on my target.

I try to put my worries about the Sacred Lands out of my mind. Are they there also in danger? I try to focus on my target here and now!

And so on.

, could you give me a placeholder please. Maybe there will appear more text today.

You’ve freed us. Finally, we can rest. We can rebuild our culture and lay all the terrible business of the past to rest.

Steel

It’s not that I’m not happy for you, but I’m also kind of bummed about the rest of the world, man - a sea witch just got released from her magical prison. I don’t think she’s going to be cool and relaxed about it.

Kahaleitzli

Quote
Perhaps this is callous of me, but I wish I could find regret in our actions. We islanders have suffered under her for more than a century, and though it is a curse on the rest of Subeta, it feels like a blessing to me.

Saggitarius

Quote
Honestly, I’m still not sure what happened. That crystal was obviously the source of the power that kept her here, but who left it on the islands? And what is the connection to the crystal that Blake found in the Sacred Lands? Who is Butterface? Who sent the map?

Elwood

Quote
We’re not going to find out. It’s a classic cliffhanger, bro.

Everyone exchanges weary looks.

Kahaleitzli

Quote
… Anyway, I promised you compensation for your work. Though it isn’t exactly as I envisioned it, it seems that our sea witch problem is over and I am not going to need that gold as an offering in the end. I will have enough to reward both teams, though no reward is worth as much as what you have done for us.

Steel

Quote
Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Kahaleitzli

Quote
Give me some time - I will send a party of my people to the temple and they will bring back gold and treasure enough for everyone.

I thank Kahaleitzli, and agree to wait for my share of the treasure.
