These were the "Good old days" of the internet for me. MSN Messenger was the best way to communicate with your friends quickly, all the sites had glitter graphics and oh, the anime that was popular in the era. Personally, for me, it was a lot of Shojo. Tokyo Mew Mew was my favorite, followed by Ojamajo Doremi... My friends were into Inuyasha, Naruto was starting to become more popular here in the US, ect. People made fan sites left and right on Piczo, Webs, or Angelfire... We watched emo kids evolve into Scene kids, they installed a DDR game at the bowling alley's arcade and my friends and I would squee over the songs we recognized like "Butterfly" and "Bumble Bee" (because we were dorks.)
While looking for some available pet names I found myself just browsing through random users, and eventually I found a few dead/inactive accounts that had some graphics from this era-- one in particular was semi-active and had them under a "Throwback" section on their page. Gah, I miss this all so much.
Anyone else share this feeling? :(
The glittery pages with glittery cursors, words, pictures and such gives me such nostalgia. Ft back when I was a sad excuse of an anime watcher, only faking enjoying series like fairy tail, one piece and such to get in the cool crown while I only watched Naruto, Bleach and Death Note. I was full-on into cute shoujo mangas and animes too. It makes me cringe today. Long were the days when I created my Piczo full of post-depressive things because I was a ragequit teen.
I cannot remember anything else. My memory is poop. All I know is that between 2000 and 2008 I've done shit that I regret a lot ha ha.
Personally speaking, those were shitty years, but aesthetically speaking I totally see where you're coming from. There's a lot of that aesthetic still going on at Tumblr, though.
Personally speaking, if I had to go back to those years, I'd slap my younger self. But ahhh, pastel rainbow backgrounds... lmao, I hate those. I do miss MSN Messenger.

Geeze it sounds like we all had some pretty rough years... but looking back at the graphics, the anime series-- A lot of it I enjoyed, and a lot of it helped keep my spirits up when I was going through a bad time.
I've been re-watching Tokyo Mew Mew, Ojamajo Doremi... heck I even found myself watching Hamtaro again. Been considering making a proboards forum again, or even a webs site... But man, Piczo was my favorite. So disappointed when it was shut down. I really liked the drag/drop simplicity.
I even remember a bunch of the games I played in that time. I was super big into Sonic the Hedgehog (DX and Adventure 2 Battle,) Animal Crossing (for the Gamecube and the original DS when it was released,) Harvest Moon (A Wonderful Life + Magical Melody which is my favorite to this day,) Billy Hatcher and The Giant Egg, Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine... I could keep going on for a while on the Gamecube Games alone.
Aha you're making me nostalgic...Objectively, I don't think that style was the very best, but I have such a soft spot for it! Plus at least I knew how to use everything lol
One of my peeves are these flowly/bubble-style website that are on trend these days. Like, instead of clicking though you can just scroll between pages. I miss the simple personal websites with buttons and find-its! Well once thing I don't miss is the fonts of ye olde days. Not even just papyrus but whatever the default was for sites? I do like the modern, cleaner aesthetic in that sense.
And yeah, I'm all about anime/games from that time. Might go dig some up now. Thanks for the blast from the past~
omfg I just had a Mario Sunshine throwback and oooh god I want to play it.
For me those years were a really dark time but I agree the aesthetic was very nice! I've always felt very nostalgic about 90s - early 2000s style programs, websites, etc. Sometimes I still skin my modern apps to look older. /hipster
I still mostly play older video games, too. I'm so excited that there are so many reboots of shows, movies, etc. :)
Yes, go have fun watching all the old animes/playing the games! <3
Oh gosh my boyfriend owns a copy of it. I convinced him to buy it as it's probably my favorite of the more recent Mario games to date. (I know a lot of people like Galaxy but Sunshine always has a place in my heart.) He kept getting so mad playing the level with the giant stingray shadow at that hotel and oh man! xD
Oh my gosh yes! Reboots have been hit and miss for the shows I liked as a kid, and sadly a good chunk of them just haven't been any good. I'm so excited for the Crash Bash remaster-- My dad and I would play that and Spyro (Spyro being the first video game I ever played,) when I was little.
I never finished the damn game because my brother left marks on the disc (on gamecube) q___q But yeah, a game that made me ragequit a lot. Reboot was gold. God I miss it.
Did they reboot sunshine?! D: If so I had no idea omg! Geeze I'm really sorry about your disc though... funny my brother has done the same thing. >>; Is it brothers? Is it a brother thing? Lol!
Nope, I meant the Canadian TV show ReBoot ha ha. Your last sentence reminded me of that old tv show that I loved to pieces ;___; Such nostalgia tbh. It might be a brother thing tbh. On a scale of 1 to 10 HOW MUCH DID YOU LOVE TO KICK THE RANDOM FRUITS AROUND ?!
Yeeeah there've been a lot that've fallen flat for me as well but I keep getting excited for them. ._.' I've never played those games but that's awesome! :D I can't wait for the portable NES, SNES and N64s to come out even though they're not reboots.
- I was also really into the Sonic Adventure games! Chao garden for life. XD
- My fiance is going to buy Sunshine in a few months or so and maybe I'll finally get that 120th Shine Sprite that I never got. Maybe.
Also, 10/10 on the fruit kicking! XD I also loved doing this glitch where if you get off of Yoshi while he's licking a fruit, he just stomps in place with his mouth gaping open. It looks so silly.
I loved to kick the fruits, ride the damn boat to chill when a boss was driving me up the wall AND jump on the png from the island. I loved to get them all angry xD
- Hehe, this makes me look forward to Sunshine more. SPRAY ALL THE RESIDENTS! 8D
Fruit kicking was the only reason Super Mario Sunshine was worth playing. :P Oh man another game I'm craving to play again is the original Animal Crossing game for the GameCube. I wanna get different memory cards with friends so we can visit eachother's towns the old fashioned way. Heck, Wild World even sounds like fun... getting into the original DS, I really want to play Pokemon Diamond and Pearl again... and use Picto Chat with my friends. D:
Oh my gosh I saw those! I was a little late, generation-wise, for the SNES, but my boyfriend (he's 4 years older than I am, give or take,) still has his and all his games. I had a Gameboy Color and a Play Station growing up-- though I have a vague memory of a neighbor kid having Sonic 2 and playing it at his house. The first video game I owned as a kid was Spyro, and when Gold/Silver came out my Uncle gave me his Pokemon Yellow version, which I still have for memory's sake. First Pokemon game I ever owned. <3
I miss and don't miss the glittery, image intensive and animation intensive aesthetic of the early 00s-08s. Loading a lot of those pages was absolutely horrendous on a computer. Myspace was notorious for it actually.
That said, I do miss the cartoons that were around in the 90s-early 2000s. I just liked the plot lines and drawing style better for the vast majority of them.
