hey guys!
The first subetaBox edition is now over and I just want to express how happy and amazed Tartelette and I are at the positive response we’ve gotten! We’ve gone through a couple hiccups and we’re working hard to balance everything as best as we can!
I’ve been silently reading through all the posts (more particularly the feedback section) and I’d like to explain/announce a couple changes for subsequent editions (:
It’s a bit of text but hopefully this answers general questions. If there are any unclear/missed out questions, please ping me!
Why were there only 2 boxes? The original concept was to offer “boxes” and thus, individual items have never been in my plans. However, I understand that buying a full box B for one item was far-fetched. I aimed to stimulate the market so that people who purchase a box have the selling/trading power should they wish to resell the items they didn’t necessarily want. That being said, it may have deterred some people to purchase a box at all.
So how are boxes going to be distributed now? After reshuffling the ideas around, I’ve concluded that the best compromise was to offer A+B, C+D, A+B+C+D (so 3 boxes total)
Purchasing smaller boxes will be slightly more expensive per piece whereas buying the full box will offer the best price. The reasoning behind this mechanism is that we still want to encourage people into purchasing the full box while allowing flexibility to those who really only want one or two items out of 4.
How were items distributed between A and B? This system is very easy! In order to provide a stable and consistent price for every box, items have been categorized by submission cost. This way, the artist gets to pick their # and draw whichever inspires them most.
More concretely, here’s what it looked like:
Box A – 1,250csc Item 1: Wig (5k category) Item 2: CLOTHING | Shirt, pants, vest, shoes etc. (4k category)
Box B - 2,400csc item 1 and item 2 are same as box A Item 3: ACCESSORY | Headpiece, hat, tattoo, makeup etc. (4k category) Item 4: CLOTHING (dress, sweater, jacket etc.), UNIQUE LIMBS, WINGS etc. [small]Anything but a wig[/small] (5k category)
There are no plans to change this method as it is the most efficient!
Can any two items be picked manually? Nope. While a couple people have voiced interest in being able to choose any two items they’d like in their box, this is simply not the concept of the subetaBox. The last thing I would want to see is creating a pool of ‘popular vs. unpopular’ items in which some monthly items may suffer at the expense of others. (Also, it's really tedious to take slots and then purchase all the copies individually, especially if numbers differ)
You of course have the choice to not purchase any box if you only want one item – in this case, be on the lookout for other users who may have purchased a box without wanting all the items in it!
Will there be more than 4 items per month? After much deliberation and self-talk, we’ve decided to occasionally offer special boxes on top of the monthly subetaBoxes.
Those will only happen once every 3 months (so 4 times a year) and will add another 3 items to the month. They have a very special theme and I’m quite excited to present the first idea either on august 15th or September 15th!
Will there always be a bonus item? Yes! The bonus item this month was the background and due to a few typing miscommunications, we confused a lot of people. Next month’s bonus item, while it may or may not be a background, will have a more specific guideline tagged to it, as well as a slightly larger batch count!
What about the mini-events/activities? Join #BOXEVENT if you’d like to be pinged for the mini-events/activities hosted around the release of every subetaBox!
Many people told us that it was rather confusing so we’ve created a separate ping just for this purpose (:
Will there be a wider variety of items? The choice of monthly items solely depends on the artist’s inspiration with regards to the theme and the category they chose.
However, please be sensible to the fact that we are all more or less doing volunteering work. Some types of items such as backgrounds are very time consuming and thus have less chances of seeing the light. Unless I can find a way to somehow pay the artists for their work, the choice is totally up to them and I will never enforce xyz type of items.
Can anyone else run events? Of course! I’ve created the subetaBox in an effort to stimulate the cw community and cw economy. If there is anyone else interested in starting events (recurring or not!, feel free to mail me – I have forum code templates available and ready to go (:
- - - Whoo, this was a long wall of text, yay if you read through all of it! If you have any questions, please ping me!
Thank you again so much for taking part, it was a super amazing experience that I’m excited to share once again on august 15th! ❤️
[small]apparently I pinged , which is a ping that doesnt even exist lmao[/small]
Thank you very much for the Q&A! I'd love to run an event like this someday!! :D
I'm like 99% sure this has been asked or I just can't seem to find it, but do you have the entire month to buy the box or just a few days after the 15th or?
Thank you cathii, for changing the boxes! I understand why it couldn't be single items(where's the fun in that anyway lol). Now all I have to do is stop slotting so much so I can save up XD
Seriously this subeta box idea is great, and you are awesome! And the artists who contribute to this are awesome, thank you<3

Thank you so much and for running the SubetaBox and especially also for taking feedback into consideration! (also thank you a ton to the artists contributing items!)
I liked 3/4 items, so I bought the 4-item box but I've already found a buyer for the single item I didn't particularly like. But I'm excited to see A+B and C+D options for the smaller boxes, just in case! c: I'm just really excited about the monthly boxes and I'm really happy it's run smoothly so far ;^;
The fact that you will charge more for two items than for four is really bad sales practice imo and would have worked a year ago when the CSC to SP ratio was better, but it shuts down a good portion of people from accessing the boxes now. Not me, but it's the principal that I'm defending.
You say this "The last thing I would want to see is creating a pool of ‘popular vs. unpopular’ items in which some monthly items may suffer at the expense of others", but that's exactly what the concept of the box is. You must have known that the veil was such a unique item that you knew its value when you put it in the second part of the box. You had to have known.
I would imagine the price of the veil on resale is going to be huge, while the price of everything else will be dramatically low.
While I agree that it's about time someone tried out something like this on Subeta, I don't think it's a good idea, but I don't like beauty boxes or things like that.
Anyway, that's just my salty two cents going into the works. Hopefully the option of three boxes will make things more accessible and reasonable.
EDIT: I want to edit this to say that I'm not saying the first three items are undesirable/ugly or anything, nor that your art is anything but phenomenal, just that I think the first try was iffy. I also deleted my first salty statement because I'm in a really bad mood. I may buy a box if I like the items, saying that I wouldn't is an outright lie.
@ Cherry
I won't comment on the first part, but speaking from the back end as an artist...most of us didn't know what the items would be until it was released to the public. People claimed the slot they wanted to draw for (which was already set into which box it would belong), and drew their items privately. 1 person posted a WIP but for the large part none of the artists, people involved, or likely even Cathii knew the items before hand until the final files were actually submitted.
:I
Yes, the item is very popular. But that's because it looks great, the artist did a good job, and they happened to claim a slot for item 4 which would be in box B.
I want to stress again that this was largely a "secret" for everyone involved, even from artist between artist.
Edit: And the future split now for 2 smaller boxes will hopefully make things more accessible. I also don't imagine everyone will keep every copy of every item, so people can trade/buy from others too. That should help. We can keep an eye out to see what the market result is for the first box.
I think it makes complete sense to offer a discount when purchasing all four items than just two?
People do that all the time for sets.

if you are ever interested in creating your own event, just mail me and I'll send you the sCode for formatting posts etc (:
you have until august 14th, basically one day before the next subetaBox starts, to claim a box!
I'm sorry but I need to respectfully disagree with you. None of us is 'milking money out of people'. In fact, we're losing money here. Those are all cws that could have been sold as cw designs, cws that could have sold for USD. Instead, each artist got a handful of csc they don't really need. All of this is volunteering work.
A part of that csc profit is in fact used to fund contests and prizes - which actually cost a lot. Every single month, I will be personally putting 3-5k csc out of my own pocket. So we're really, really not milking it. If it's not your cup of tea in terms of concept, then that's perfectly fine! I just don't want anyone to think that we're actually raking in gold here, because we aren't.
I didnt know that the veil would be more popular actually, but I distributed the items as I thought - like I wrote in the FAQ, next month's distribution will be different so that every item has equal coverage!
And lastly - the whole reason for boxes is so that people who buy the boxes can actually resell their items for their initial amount. Pawn shop is a well known plague around the cw community and the last thing I want is to see all the items pawned within a day. By ensuring that every item has an initial value, I am hoping to balance this out (:
Edit: when I say 'slightly' higher, I'm not going to be charging 900csc per item by the way lol
@ Mail I actually just edited out the total salt part at the first bit, ahah.
I didn't know that was the case from the artist's point of view, though. It seems sort of odd, though, that the first three all matched each other (Sort of, the staff had gold) and then the last was a unique, beautiful item (accented with silver).
@ Cathii I know, I actually went back and edited my post. Though, now I am curious. Were the slots pre-claimed, or did you distribute the items as you thought?
I'm not so sure that the items will re-sell for their value, coming later. Plenty of 1-2 batch CWs sell for below slot price, it's not really that unusual. The unwanted items is actually my main gripe here, because to get the veil I'd have had to purchase three CWs that I didn't want because I wouldn't have used them. I've already seen some of the box items for sale, and to me that's offputting. Paying such a large amount of CSC for one item, then attempting to rely on a steady market to resell items is pretty risky from someone who doesn't have a lot of CSC laying around like artists do (as you pointed out).
Like I said, doing A+B, C+D, and ABCD is definitely going to balance out this issue and I think that it will really help and maybe make the idea more appealing.
Edit for your edit: Oh-kay well that makes it a lot less daunting because I was thinking excessively higher, considering the artists do all need to take a cut of CSC for themselves for, as you said, contest prizes.
I distributed the items as I thought!
Actually only two items 'match', the veil and the staff -- the staff was originally another artist's slot but she had to forfeit due to real life issues. I drew the thing in-extremis to submit it right after, and Kraken ended up helping me with it (which is why it does seem to match the veil more)
In general, no items will be related to each other. It only happened this time because it wasn't expected really!
I've based myself off years of cw selling/experience and I really think it can -potentially- be the right balance. Also, don't forget that some of the boxes purchased do come from users who do not typically buy cws - we're already reducing the market of available items. Although as I said, A+B, C+D, ABCD will solve a couple issues here!
And to reply to your edit: gosh definitely it wouldnt be excessively higher! I said it'd be 'slightly' higher and by that, i probably mean +50ish csc per item haha
i think the change of next months options will be better. And I think the pricing to be fair. Buy smaller boxes you pay more. I do that often with Sets. Buy only one piece you pay more then if you buy more. V:)
read the giant wall of text and I think the three box idea is good. I also support a slightly higher charge for the 2 item boxes compared to the all items box. It makes perfect sense to me. A lot of people offer discounts if you slot on a whole set of items, and likewise discount when selling multiple items. I don't see any difference between those and this! ;P Plus you are charging less than typical slot price either way so I definitely have no complaints!
Thank for the replies & updates c: and I'm looking forward to next months box even more!!

I'm definitely excited for the smaller boxes. What really kept me away from purchasing this time around was the fact that none of the items really appealed to me but one. I can totally understand wanting to charge a bit more for fewer items. In reality, it only makes sense. Also just wanted to say I appreciate the fact that you're paying out of pocket and using your CSC to make this a reality. <3 Super excited to see what items are gonna be next. n_n
