I know how you feel I lost both my in laws over the years. I was very close to them. Some in laws, can become like your own parents, and i sense that is your case. Know there really isnt anything special you can say or do for your wife or her family, but be there for her and her family. They both past early in my marriage. My 3 boys never got a good chance to know them, being they were overseas. They only got to see 2 of my boys. Remeber laughter is the best medicine, in that I mean and its what I did for my siblings, when we lost my sister. Bring up good memories, funny family events or something that was real funny. Yes its apprioriate, but no bawdy/dirty stories that would be inapprioriate.

Even drunk Carl can be generous once in awhile.
