I like this idea! Some of those little prehistoric horses(can't remember what they were called) and mammoths, this could be fun.

well there's "prehistoric" wild species we have now/recently to get inspiration (Przewalski's Horse, Tarpan, Brumby), then of course there's the evolutionary line to draw (heh, 'draw') from.

edit: didn't se the 'small' bit, here's a better illustration with the main players for ancestors

Yeesss, I support this!! A fierce prehistoric Velosotor (perhaps with feathers!?) would be awesome. So would a dire wolf Telenine.

I've thought of an idea to expand on this:

A Journey To the Center of the Earth and/or The Lost World* styled plot with Blake Steele and maybe the Yun family.

Nothing really to add myself at the moment, but I'd definitely be very interested in a colour along these lines.

: I definitely have no idea any more than either of you why people immediately think this will be 'like' some other pet site/game or why we can't have one pet similar to something already done. By Subeta's own rules, they have to change at least 40% of anything they do to avoid copywrite infringement, so nothing on here COULD be 'like' another existing site pet/item/etc.

: The prehistoric Velosotor would have to be sufficiently different from its angel color, because that's the feathered raptor, literally.

As for this idea in general, it has a lot of potential to be really awesome, and I'm actually a bit surprised my brother hasn't commented here yet, since he's the paleo-geek in our family. :P I'd love to see more of the pet lore finished, too.

I like this idea a lot! Additions or suggestions for some of the pets are also really interesting concepts.

Some others whose ancient forms would be unique: -The Kora is a photosynthesizing animal, so would than mean its ancient form would be a plant or half-plant? Taking into account that often terrains change over time, it's possible it was a plant which lived in a rainforest before the rainforest dried up and became the desert it is now, so the Kora becoming animal-like could have been an evolutionary path from a semi-mobile plant to fit its new environment.

-Did Celinoxes in the past not have crystal forms on their backs, or were they actually MORE crystalline?

-Aeanoids would have been more bark-like and scaled since the environment was likely harsher, and it would probably have had some bright(er) colors--reds and purples with browns and greens weren't uncommon.

-Did Escalades, as created experimental creatures, have a different look at their creation, or would their 'ancient form' be more akin to another base creature they had been based on?

-On the basis that the desert was once a rainforest, were wild Kerubis less furry? They wouldn't have wings on their heads because those were created through breeding, but they could have also been larger--or smaller, for that matter--and probably with less fur or with fur which produced so much oil because it was meant to keep rain from penetrating to their down fur.

-Not so 'unique' but noted in lore is that the Legecia supposedly had a horn, so its ancient form would be a kind of unicorn or kirin/qilin.

-Again not so unique, but it would be huge fun to have a Feli with flight-capable wings like they used to!

The only thing that gets me is the Cadogre and Endeavor, since they would have been what before Blackmoon Corp. made them? Maybe they had been something similar to the toys Vanya makes, or more similar to a Steamworks pet in their prototype stages?

My idea for dealing with an Ancient Cadogre/Endeavor: Calvin designed them based off extinct creatures that the current-day Cadogre/Endeavor merely resemble. Perhaps these two went extinct because they lacked certain aspects to help them survive.

Maybe the Endeavor's wings were something akin to a frilled lizard, but lacked flight capabilities. By being a large reptilian creature, obviously those tend to either die out or adapt to become smaller-sized (smaller size=less demand for energy=less food needed to consume). In the OG Endeavor's case, perhaps the frilled lizard's prey died out, and because it could not adapt to other food sources, it too died out.

Suppose where the current-day Cadogre's radar orb sits served a catch-22 in the original creature it was based on: something flashy to attract mates but was also a vital weak spot. Maybe they lacked fur and could not adapt to climate changes as a result. Or the current-day Cadogre have a radar system built in because the OG one's ability to hunt was limited and relied on foraging to survive the tough times.

: Very astute observations, and they could very well be viable to develop an 'ancient' form of the species. If we use that as a basis, ancient forms would have to either be created by genetic data taken from fossils or from some "hidden oasis" which remained separated from the world and where nothing in their environment changed, meaning they could survive there. Finding that 'place' would be sort of like finding another Peka Glade, but for many otherwise extinct creatures. Of course, it may be that the fossil option would be easier and more viable, while producing the same result, access to the form.

It would be doable, and some of the forms those could take in an 'ancient' form could get very creative and unique if they're essentially placed as dinosaur-age creatures. Thanks for the thought! :D

Ooh, I like the idea of having fossil-like items being part of the process in making a potion or maybe a new NPC can revive a fossilized specimen or DNA of a pet species for an fee (good way to get sPs deleted out of the global economy).

: And the good part about it is that many of the 'ancient' pets would fall under that category, so that could simply be the general method of creating any ancient pet, similar in a way to what Vanya or Merana do.

Agreed, it'd be fun to have a mini-plot where we meet up with a new NPC that wants to uncover fossils for a museum or something, and can find a way to revive ancient forms of pets. Perhaps they would need whatever pet you choose to help match the DNA between current-day and the ancient form's DNA in order to restore their ancient form to an already-existing lifeform.

: That would be somewhat logical for most pet types, since most aren't an object with a soul/A.I. And it really would be fun to meet someone who wants to do that, but maybe rather than for a museum, they want to create a tourist zone similar to what "Jurassic Park" or "Dinotopia" were, only with way more beings than just dinosaurs. And generally a more peaceful place than "Jurassic Park". :P

I'd be up for a tourist site thing. Where would be the best place? Darkside? That place barely gets any love.
