ah, gotcha, I had the spectrum and when I used a background I wouldn't see the rainbow, if I really didn't want to see it, I could use whiteout, wish it had been in it. I hope they can resolve some of these issues, if not, this time if year is still lots of fun, I also hope they bring back the zombie skins again next year too. They say not but like someone said above, they have been known to change their minds. :)
Yeah, anything that isn't in that little normal human skin cut out gets chopped off by backgrounds :c I'd be so stoked if we could move the background below the avatar skin, but nothing else could be below it. I hope so too. I can't see them implementing it this year or anything since so much is already going on with the plot and all, but hopefully they do change their minds c: I'd like to see zombie skins again sometime too!

I do that all the time. I'm crazy about capes/drapes/bgs/fgs (which I often use as bg layers haha)/etc and I honestly don't want to go on about HA making without that possibility. At this point, I think I'm considering my lack of a nose and skin spots as a tradeoff for more layering options, lol... this is a drape as a cape. Fg as bg.
Keith said it wasn't possible to do it given the way the old wardrobe was coded, I'm not sure it would be possible on the new one, but it would be utterly amazing. The ability of using foreground items as backgrounds alone was Subeta-life-changing for me, haha xD
At the moment, hiding your non-human skin feels much more rewarding than showing it off, depending on your HA preferences (especially if it includes backgrounds). Hell, feels more rewarding than being a human.
You know, I feel really bad for the artists who actually make a lot of these skins. All of them are great, but because they have pieces and parts that leak off the base, no one wants to use them. People get upset when they get them because they're too hard to work with.
I'd be pretty heartbroken if I'd drawn a skin (which looks like it takes a LONG TIME) and no one ever used it. :C
I'm going to use one for sure, even if it leaks off the base, not letting that stop me. :) The artist that make these up do a fantastic job on them, they are just awesome.
I've had my demon zapper skin for at least 2 years now I think. I wouldn't ever change it...and I'm really happy that they made it so we can keep the skins we like for good :)
I've learned to work with the little obstacles of it (not using some eyes/lips as they're too small, the hooves looking funky on a BG) I have also seen a lot of people keeping their deer skins year round. I've purchased half of my wardrobe around what works with the coloring of it :p It's just too awesome to not keep!
I would definitely prefer being able to put a BG behind it sometimes, but that's not going to make me get rid of it. Hope you get one you like! ^_^
nice, I really think that deman one is great but I don't think ot would go well with my account name. I enjoyed working with it. I agree with you, I'm keeping either this deer skin or the spectrum even though the rainbow doesn't show up while I'm using a background. That rainbow is a major part of that skin but I huess one doesn't use bs'so with it
Well, special skins are broken in both wardrobes right now so they have to do something with them eventually. Hopefully they'll reconsider this when the time comes (hopefully soon... and not Subeta Soon™, but like Webster's dictionary soon).
I remember when the Artist Pencil came out and people figured out how to pair it with Vanishing Cream to make really cool bodysuits and tights. It was pretty much revolutionary. If skin becomes layerable, I can see that happening again. :D

Yeah I know... I assumed the broken skins problem was/is all about the script not loading the base layers for some reason (as every special skin is kind of a "layer"). I have no idea if that section is detachable, but picturing the skin layer similarly to what we currently have for hair, it'd be revolutionary indeed xD There's also a lot of people who'd love to alternate between a zapper and a zombie skin, but I don't think they'd make the actual skin layers detachable even if they could
I really don't get the "this is your skin" argument, idk, if we go with rl comparisons I can pick a drape and wear it in front of my body or behind it? Eh. Picture your HA as a 3d person instead of 2d doll and you'll see the skin actually means the body.
@ the op's suggestion of turning the head part into a hair layer, it could be fancy, but the major issue I see with it is possibly locking zapped skin users from using different hairstyles :x The skin's "hair" would have to be an addition to the list, however if you put it on the salon list then people would have to pay to switch back to that (and it would make little sense as it's not recolorable at all)... having the whole skin movable would be so much better.
edit: I guess a whole new "skin hair" layer could still be made solely for those, but seems a lot of trouble for little benefit...
+ =

Look how much fun you could have with hair if you could move the body layer. :o

</p>I love what you've done here I removed my bg now I can see the rainbow and get completely what your talking about. I had on a background and couldn't see the rainbow, once removed, there it is.
I am in full support of this after getting that sweet unicorn horn zap skin and thinking, "awesome! runs off to make Rarity ha". But yeah...that nice horn I was so excited to use for an avi before trying again? Hidden under the darn hair. TT_TT

This is just really a technical limitation of our avatar system. The more "layers" we add, the further processing every time one of them is loaded. That means that we have to increase either caching time (so it takes longer to see changes) or servers used primarily to build avatar images.
Beyond that, separating everything into a draggable layer is really difficult, and would make things a lot more complicated than we'd like.
And even beyond that, these are all "hexes" that replace the base of the avatar. We cannot start adding additional layers based on what hex you have (would it replace the hair layer? add an additional hair layer?) without rewriting a huge chunk of the system.
The "you're a zombie deal with it" quote is from people asking for it to be a layer so they could just layer the base over top of it, which I've said will never happen because it is your base, like the zapper skins.
So - it's unlikely this will happen.

And the final point is, very few users have these bases. Very few users keep zombie / zapper skins, and it's possible that is because of these limitations but it's unlikely.
We'd be rewriting massive chunks of the avatar system (different than the wardrobe. I haven't touched the avatar system code the entire time I've been rewriting the wardrobe) for the benefit of very few users.

Thank you for replying, appreciated knowing this, I think something like this was suspected. Thank you again, have a great day. :)
- I'm not surprised to hear that it's too difficult to break up skins into body, hair, etc., but what about layering the base as a whole? You didn't seem to touch on that in your posts.
Would it be possible to combine all the base elements (human, zombie, and zapper skins, nose, mouth, eyes) into one moveable layer? That seems like it should be much more do-able, and I really do believe it would benefit everyone -- even people with human HAs.
It wouldn't make it easier to hide zombie skins, but it would add a new dimension to HA making for all users. The image I posted before is a really good example of this:

The left side is how two new Pumpkin Patch wigs layer now, and you see the bangs poking out from the longer hair underneath. They don't really work together. On the right, the regular human skin has been moved between the two wigs, turning it into one seamless wig. You could do this with other wigs, clothes, foregrounds... pretty much everything.

Yeah, unfortunately right now the "face" things (eyes / nose / lips / etc) aren't even considered a layer because they aren't movable. The avatar system loads your base (or hex) and then loads those, and then puts the items in the order that you've specified.
It'd take a lot of reworking to turn those things into actual layers (especially because they aren't "together" - they are all separate just make up what we call the base) and then make it so that users can move all of those things around.
Maybe someday, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

- Is there a way to do it on the wardrobe side of things? Yeah the images are separate, but would it be possible to throw them all in a single div and move them as one chunk?

Yeah, but then that has to be saved in a way that the avatar system saves all of those things together in that order. Right now the avatar system is only built to move around / layer clothing and the hair layer. Adding additional stuff to that process is a lot of coding. I wish it were as simple as "just use what the wardrobe does" but it isn't :(

- Well, thanks for at least entertaining the possibility. I hope you keep it in mind as you continue to work on the beta wardrobe. :)
(By the way, is there an ETA on when we'll get our zombie/zapper skins back in the wardrobe? They've been missing for a while and it's difficult to work that way.)
