If staff refuse to make an effort into fixing things, maybe we shouldn't make an effort to visit? Seriously, if most of the users that were here for years stop coming for weeks, maybe things will change. But I feel like staff think that since we still come, we find the broken site still decent enough to use it.

What's the point of logging in and having to use the ping in my sidebar to access forums (the link is broken) What's the point of being close to unable to check on my pet because it lags, and sometimes, it times out before I can access it.

and are on point.

ffs, idk why there is very little communication. They do not have to tell use anything, but they should tell us some things. Just updates on how things are going, or their general plans, idk. I mean, the Battle Admins often try and tell us their progress/their thought process (whether people like it or not is a different story)

Also, if site is short on programmers, why cant there be a sale/fundraiser or something to raise money to hire some temp programmers. RL businesses often contract people for a few months to complete projects they otherwise wouldn't need the manpower for, why can't it be the same here.

So much this. My dad is an amazing programmer, I'm sure I could talk him into helping out if subeta needed it that badly.

I have to agree, I love Subeta but it's difficult to feel immersed in a site that seems to be falling apart a little more everyday.

The bug that is annoying me the most at the moment is the fact that my gallery looks like crap when I start to scroll down on the page to look through it (there seems to be an issue with the "add to wishlist" hovers or something, all of the item text disappears, leaving a big blank white space on the page- more about it here). It might seem like a little thing to some but one of my favourite things to do here is work on my galleries and I don't feel like doing that when they're all messed up. -_- The same thing happens with wishlists, and even Smails with item codes in them.

Also I thought I'd work on my sticker collection a few weeks ago but that is messed up too; moving stickers around leaves the pop up item hover things stuck all over the page, obscuring the stickers.

Not to mention the utterly broken forums (I'm so sick of hunting down pings after being directed to a random page urgh). I hope it all gets fixed soon.

Almost every revamp lately has felt rushed and half-finished when it was pushed through. It is really frustrating to see new things that are broken (I'm looking at you, forums!) and seem to stay broken while something else gets pushed out.

I get that hiring professional programmers is a very expensive endeavor, I really do. I work (now directly) for a large scale pipeline company that hires contract programmers to make toolbars and extensions for ArcGIS to more easily update/correct our database. And even for a large, multi-billion dollar organization, they still get cross-eyed when they see how much it costs to deal with contractors.

I also really doubt, knowing how much a fulltime professional programmer (should) make hourly/yearly, that subeta could afford to keep one offhand on top of everything else (unless it's pulling in bigger numbers than I can imagine).

HOWEVER, however, if subeta made a fundraiser on something like gofundme laying it out for us with how much money it'd take to hire a programmer to get this site straightened out with everything that needs to be done (no pussy footing, really, black and white)... I imagine a lot of people would give money to it. I know I would. Even if the "perks" weren't subeta related items, god, maybe just thank you videos listing all the users who gave even a buck or answering every single question asked when giving money.. Idfc. I would. I want to see subeta overcome it's coding once and a for all, and just... work. I want to see subeta, work.

I want to see the site say they hired someone to fix it. The site go down for however long. Then it comes back up and pings work, my pet page doesn't lag, at 3:00:00 when I want to try for a pet name the site doesn't 502 and eat itself, I want to see achievements working and the site not dying when there's an event, even when there's mass battling, I want to be able to see just CWs or no CWs in the wardrobe so I can scout for TC items.

I want to see item/pet releases without posts going "cool more items too bad the site doesn't work".

I want to wish this wasn't a pipe dream.

There are still issues with the forums. Why can't they focus on fixing those instead of bringing out the new achievements system? Not to mention the achievements still have issues...they should have waited till all issues for THAT were fixed before releasing it -_-

This so much! I already donate plenty to Subeta but I would donate more if I knew it went to the site and not to fund Keith's five week romp around the states.

I think crowdfunding would be a good step in the right direction. If we can get a programmer hired full time for the time it takes to rework the code from the ground up and have a clean slate, it should be so much easier for site maintenance going forward. What do you think

i sure as hell would chip in what i could for an undertaking like that. and i'd do it without site-based (or offsite) incentives. if you ask me, "subeta functioning properly" is more than enough to justify a donation

my only stipulation is that whoever they bring should come vetted, so that we know they're hiring on someone trustworthy and, you know, good.

i feel like if we could at least build up a solid foundation and tackle some of the biggest problem areas on the site, then the permanent programmers could start taking on more reasonable projects, and actually be able to sit down and work said projects through to completion. or at least, that's the hope.

I want to be surprised that staff haven't been assed to comment here yet but I just can't. Isn't that stupid Harry Potter convention still going on or was that last month? Having fun at unrealated things has always taken presidence over fixing the third world infrastructure here. It's just more apparent now because they've been putting plaster over the decaying ruins at a more frequent pace and going "WE REVAMPED THIS AREN'T ROUNDED EDGES AWESOME?!" If you're going to revamp things, finish them and make sure they work before moving to the next. Otherwise you're left with a mess of half assed half finished projects that do nothing to improve the impression staff gives no fucks about this place anymore. Does anyone even buy CSC anymore? I can't even remember the last time I've spent real money here. What's the point when the site is getting progressively worse?

If I had to take a stab at it, I'd say hiring a full-time programmer for even 1 month (which would be 160 hours of work) would be somewhere around $5,600-8,000. I'm not sure if subeta could pull that off or not, or how much work the site really needs.

But likewise, if 100 users gave $100 to the fundraiser (or 200 users gave $50, etc), that'd be $10k - the cost of using the fundraising site. If subeta was willing to throw in stuff for higher donations, I feel like it could be pulled off. Free pet slot to all who donate anything if they reach $5k, +1 slot for $100 donations or... or get to help design a non-custom item with a staff artist for $100.. for $250 work with a staff artist to design an experimental pet.. for reaching a goal of X staff will design a new battle challenger to be released, etc, etc.

If this is something that would possibly help the site, I would really love to see staff look into this. Do their own numbers on what's needed, get some quotes from ( exactly) trustworthy programming companies, and if it's potentially dooable.. make a news post with a link to a board about what's being considered.. possible "perks" or things they could do with the money to help the site if the money required isn't met (like if they make $5k instead of $10k.. could that money still be used to better the site)?

Hell it might even be good marketing, who knows. Seeing a site admitting it needs help and a loyal userbase.. it might draw in some curious people.

I do have to say that I didn't experience any lag during the Peekaboo event, which I've never ever had before with any event as long as I'm a member (7 years). Wohoo!

But I do think the site is a big mess right now. Games are missing from the games page, highscores do not pay out, forums are a mess (battle and cult forums switch places every time), and now achievements are a mess too.

I'm looking forward to the day that achievements are working properly again, because that will be the day of a new Gelatin War, which we skipped last year (and the year before? Don't remember when the last one was).

As thoughtful as it is - crowd-funding or donating for new programmers isn't a viable option to revamp and fix the core functions of Subeta. We've hired them in the past for games and side-features, but the core of Subeta (forums, achievements, etc) includes hundreds (if not thousands) of pages, hundreds of database tables, and hundreds of millions of rows within those -- it's a massive and complex system. That isn't easy to teach or learn. Keith, Grace, and I have been working here for many years and we know the scripts and functions of Subeta like the back of our hands.

It boils down to an issue of time. We all, as in programmers and staff, want a better Subeta. We don't enjoy fixing bugs, rewriting old scripts, or rebuilding systems - we want to build exciting features, games, plots, and fun things for players to do. But it's a balancing act of keeping all of the old functions working and bringing out new ones. Features like the wardrobe, achievements, and forums have grown in ways that we would have never imagined when they were first released. That drains the system, and as critical parts of the site - we don't have the option to build those out in a parallel dev universe (like we can with brand new features). Those need to be worked on in real time and issues will, unfortunately, be realized in real time, too.

We really appreciate all of the patience and support in this. If there was an easy fix, we would have done it by now. If it was as simple as taking Subeta offline for a week and hammering out all of the bugs - we'd consider it. But it'd really take several months time and God knows how much money to turn Subeta offline and rebuild it from the ground up. We don't those resources or the time. Please have faith that we are trying our hardest to improve the site.

I don't care how long it takes, I would still just be happy if we could do one major revamp at a time. The new forums still have issues. The old wardrobe is now unusable even for those of us who have been able to use it up to this point, but the new wardrobe isn't a plausible solution (for one thing, it's got its own issues) because there's no sorting system or even a way to remove items.

I know we've been waiting since we skipped the gelatin war last year, but couldn't the achievement system have waited another month or two before going live so at least some of the forum/wardrobe issues could be fixed first?

I appreciate staff posting to talk a bit to us about their side of the works.

That doesn't really explain why some bugs that were caught in beta testing were never fixed (or not until after official release), or why newly written features keep coming out while the previous is still very much broken. I can most definitely understand it must be a tough effort to sort out the thousands of pages of old, server-draining coding, and there are only so many hours in a day. I'm just saying that, right now, barely keeping the old functions working might not be enough; we'd love if the focus was on getting them as good as they could be. Preferably one at a time.

I think everyone here still has at least a little bit of faith and hope. Hope that maybe things can get sorted out in a near future and we can come online and chat with our friends, dress up our HAs or work on our pets and achievements in a smooth way. Please consider not working on any major new features until we can do all that again. Those are the ultimate reasons we come online.

I want to second that opinion, especially as we near the Fall event season. I know I'd be happy to see the Fall schedule operate as it did the previous year, so long as it operates smoothly because some of these major issues were actively addressed. No need to try to jazz things up to excite us.

You guys have put enough on your plate right now. Take a moment to chew what you've served up. I think that will really please us all a lot more than rolling out something new and exciting. Then next year you can resume the fun new stuff!

To be perfectly 100% truthfully honest on the border of blunt, and I don't mean this in an intentionally hurtful way or anything, but I really doubt subeta's coding is so intensely over the top and complex that a person who does this for a living couldn't understand the coding/what the end goal is.

There is often a learning curve when tackling something new, but we're talking about people who do this for a living, professionally.

There's also the prospect of trying to temporarily hire someone who used to work for subeta again, until the bulk of the coding has been tackled.

I do understand that outsourcing isn't always ideal, and that it costs a lot more than it would to just keep things in house, but is the repercussions on loosing loyal members/gaining and keeping new members/damage caused by continuous use of broken parts of the site/inability to successfully move forward with new features due to time consumed updating existing features really more sustainable than doing numbers and finding out if the site COULD outsource coding and what it would cost, and potentially showing someone who should understand coding.. what's up and what to fix?

In the end, if it isn't possible then it is what it is. But I really really doubt a programmer is incapible of grasping subeta's coding and needs.

I'ma leave this with a quote:

Quote
“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

That is two sided. Subeta's always been coded in house, and it's always functioned about as stable as it is today. Sure it lags less (sometimes) but half the site features either don't work or only half work. Likewise, as users we always sit and wait for magic to suddenly happen, and it never does. Eventually, one of these is going to have to change.

Either the site will have to be fixed, or the users will have to leave.
