Personal Information and Security

Due to this ruling on Youtube! we are adopting a new standard of deleting logs after a month. Hopefully other sites also adopt this method.
What this means is, that we will be deleting our log files monthly, that keep track of your pages visited, and your IP addresses. While this information helps us track down multiple accounts and cheaters, at some point in the future that information could be requested by some bully corporation, and if this ruling is any indication, we'd be required to give up your personal information and your browsing habits to that corporation.
To keep it simple, it means that we're protecting your privacy, and making it harder for large corporations to request information about where you've been looking on the internet.
If you share a computer with someone else, you're fine! Don't worry about it :)

So with this YouTube thing, are people that have just watched copyrighted videos and stuff going to get in trouble? Or just the people that posted them?

Firstly, I'd like to applaud this decision. I do have a question about it's implementation. Will the data be scrubbed monthly as in, a certain time of month each month... or monthly as in, the data will be deleted once it is 30 days old?

Sorry for triple post. Yes, the User Files that checks to see if we lose any items are the logs he are deleting, I think. The way I think they work is that the UA checks your IP and sees where you have visited and how you could lose the item. :/

Love the David and Goliath scenario and I relish the idea of Subeta being the fly in Viacom's soup...or the burr under its megacorporate saddle. But in the long run, it will probably end up being a stopgap measure. The sad truth remains that the hardball boys with the biggest bankrolls tend to rewrite all the rules to suit themselves. Final Analysis: money runs government, government runs law and privacy runs aground.

PS If you really ARE being watched, can you still be considered paranoid?

UA's have always referred to ";logs"; as where they search for items, making it sound as if each user has a log within the system somewhere.

At this point it isn't clear if the user log files that UA's use for review and the log files you intend to delete are different files. It still sounds like it might be the same file.

Wouldn't backed upthatfiles would contain the same info you are intending to delete?

Correct me if I am wrong --- Backed Upthatfiles would have to be decompressed to be reviewed wouldn't they? The User Files that contain the data that UA's review when we lose items, seem to be the same type of file if not the same file as the one you are discussiong deleting.

Logs and database backups are two entirely different things.

The database backups are made more frequently, and kept for a long period of time (made more frequently now, since the last incident)

Logs are huge text files just full of user information, and requests hitting the web server.

I don't understand your logic.

I didnt say not to do it here I suggested that perhaps the file purges be less frequent - especially since this iste isnt very stable and items are getting glitched out of existence or getting lost in a recess of a database somewhere - those log files contain information on pixelated items we have acquired while playing on this website and when we discover them missing we can contact a UA and hopefully we can get them back. If the logs are deleted once a month then there is a one month time limit placed on all lost items, isn't there?

You will have my IP info logged, no matter how often you delete the logs.

So since my personal basic info will always be avaiable I don't see the logic in being overly concerned with the logs being deleted with any frequency

As a player I feel that logs should be held onto longer so that ya'll can review them for cheaters and have them available in case an item goes poof.

This is especially useful considering the fact that Neopets is Viacom-owned and someday they might decide that the concept of online pet sites is somehow copyrighted by them. >> Not only that, but they could use item logs and similar things to see why Subeta appeals to its users, then attempt to copy it. Haha, let's see them scramble of the idea that friendly staff and protection of privacy are a factor in the user appeal. -_-

Seriously, thanks for this.
