SOPA

Hi everyone! We usually refrain from posting anything political or US-based on the site, but this is an important one. Right now in the US we are debating a bill called SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). This bill would give the government sweeping power to shut down websites that appear to be breaking any copyright.

An example of this would be if a user on Subeta posted a copyright picture, video, or song in the forums, the entire site of Subeta could be shut down until that issue is resolved. Right now, we are simply contacted by the owner and asked to remove the offending post, item, in a way that doesn't impact the rest of the users on Subeta.

Some of my favorite websites (TUMBLR!!!) have already said it would be impossible for them to run under the rules that SOPA sets up, and would most likely have to be shut down or entirely change their services.

Here is an excellent article from Lifehacker that tells you exactly what SOPA is, and what it will do to the sites that you visit daily. here is a site with petitions and other information that will help you contact the appropriate people, should you feel so inclined.

Anyway, thanks for reading! Like I said, I wouldn't post this here if it didn't directly have an impact on the way that we run Subeta, and on the way that the other sites that you visit would also have to change. As always, I suggest you read the bill yourself so you can make an educated choice on how you feel about what it does.

I have already signed a petition dealing with this overblown situation - before I had actually read the bill. What a dumb idea that was.

This won't fly. 95% of the internet would be wiped out. ^^; A little worried that this was just now mentioned though. Heard about it over a month ago.

Side-note: if I believed SOPA would destroy the internet, I would be pissed. It's one of the ways I talk to people I am friends with, go on Suebta, check out Pixiv (mostly the R-18 pictures - suck on that, deviantART, with your dumb no porn policies), go on the Chans, use Yahoo! Messenger, etc. I live and breathe the damn internet. I'd be lost without it.

I'm still waiting on if that's the only reason he's "crazy." If that's the only thing you've got I can't help but find fallacy in your logic.

So he stormed off the set of one interview, big fucking deal. Atleast he hasn't lied about millions of things. I find lying about my support or dissupport on certain stances more "unpresident like" than leaving an interview after being hounded multiple times after giving the same answer.

Hey, good thing you're not in the White House, then! To be a President, you have to learn to not run and hide over those questions (why Palin can never ever be President - among other HUGE lapses in her judgement). It wasn't like the newsletter was headed by some random kook; it was headed by RON PAUL HIMSELF. The hell does he get off saying 'lol I never read it'?? I don't want him in charge of the country if he's as unreliable as the current people in charge (that includes all of the legislators in the House and Senate, too, not just the President).

Is that the only reason you have for him being "crazy?" I saw the video, I read the article. If I was being hounded so much I would've stormed off too.

Romney as president? God fucking save us all.

Because Ron Paul, while a respected doctor, is crazy. Come on, look at what he did at CNN during an interview. He got pissed-off and took his mic off and left the interview. That's just rude and doesn't seem too presidential. Throwing a hissy fit over legitimate questions - about your own damn newsletter (anti-gay, racist, anti-MLK Jr., anti-Semitic, etc.) - is stupid. Lol, don't ask me who the hell will be the next president, but it won't be him or Newt or Perry...or Bachmann or Santorum. Probably Romney.

What does that have to do with anything? It's neither here nor there. Both sides are going batshit crazy over this 'supposed' censorship bill. Censorship is a big issue with Libertarians (I lean more towards there), so, I'm more surprised if this 'supposed' censorship bill is real, why they aren't coming out against it. No, please don't mention Ron Paul.

Those infernal little shits have gone too far. Anonymous has even posed videos, even if they're not as active and threatening as they used to be. This must be denied! This is one of the dumbest things that the US government has done, and they CLEARLY have jumped the gun and have not read through the concequesnces. As on YouTuber had said: "Shut down the internet, and you have a whole Generation against you."

I've done nearly everything that I can do. I've signed every petition around. Now we just wait...

I always found if you put a song on your profile it would actually help companies. I know i wouldn't have found many songs if it weren't for some of my friends. The fact that it doesnt actually stop piracy is what gets me. And it also goes against our right of speech and expression. It would take down fan videos and I also heard fan ART. I cant apparently draw my favorite characters anymore or else i shut a whole site down. Good job government. You managed to make the 99% even more unhappy then we were before. Wile stuffing your faces with the endorsements you are getting from Hollywood.

I'm so scared that it's going to pass. :c It turns out a lot of the sites that support it, though, used to support the same copyright-infringing software we used, like Limewire.

Sometimes the US take things too far! That country never ceases to surprise me xD Just out of curiosity: if Subeta could be changed to a European-based website, would it be safe from this law? In Europe we are a bit crazy too, but at least right now we are too busy trying to get out of the current economic crisis to even thing about internet policies.

Do they think this is going to help anything? Who is going to pay for internet if all they can do is visit corporate websites? I certainly won't. I also won't be posting for internet access on my phone. I thought that they were trying to get people to consume, not encouraging then to cancel services...

That's just ridiculous. I find it, in a way, amusing. I mean, seriously? When the resources could be put to better use, uhh... I dunno, like say, help decrease poverty level, they decided to go "Hey, lets jail everyone for downloading" when they're the ones who provided it in the first place? I means, seriously, if you go on MSN etc and you saw all those advertisement links, majority of them happens to be links to download links or P2P programs. To be honest, I find this step to be way worse that North Korea approach to regulate their internet access. The world kept going and making a big deal out of it when the North Koreans somehow deal with it. So, I do find it to be offensive when people kept bringing NK and comparing NK government to SOPA Act. It's different, way different in so many levels. For starters, most SOPA supporters, well, it was apparent on how they're a bunch of hypocrite. Oh well, that's how the rich gets richer. Trample on the little people...

There are also a couple of countries in the Middle East who run that way, or similarly, then there's Burma/Myanmar which has a very strict intranet (not to mention almost everything else is controlled by the military regime) - but I guess it'll always be North Korea which would get the "spotlight", since Burmese governance is even more secretive and brutal in certain extents. In North Korea, certain sites can be requested to be added in the intranet if it passes the regulatory commissions. The Burmese intranet doesn't even make this possible at all.

They don't understand what is it like to be poor, they don't understand what it is like to be middle class, even, and they sure as hell don't understand how the internet works.

Wow. D: I know that piracy is pretty bad all over the world, but banning ANYTHING copyright-related on a non-related site is just outright anal. I consider piracy to be downloading hacked movies or art programs, which could be addressed much more efficiently than this, NOT posting a picture of Stitch from "Lilo and Stitch" on my profile. Who is it hurting if I want a picture of my favorite cartoon alien on my profile? I'm not claiming to have invented him and I'm not even making a profit off of him being there. It's so stupid. First we're not allowed to bring Disney movies to school or to our friends' house to enjoy, and now this. Can I even utter the name of Stitch without the heavy hand of government coming down to smack me on my tender little head? Why don't they just copyright everything blue, for crying out loud.

PS: I know that the bill isn't solely addressing Disney property, but it just seemed like a fitting, if narrow, example to use in my rant.
