We all had a great time at the Klondike Days. Parents and the band kids went on a bus together. The entertainment was great with dog sled races and dance hall girls, etc. we had a delicious lobster buffet. Would have loved to go again but we only lived in Cassiar 2 1/2 years. Bruce had a job setting up a trades training school. Cassiar was a town built and owned by an asbestose company. The side product of mining for asbestos were gold and jade. So there were individuals who made beautiful jade objects and jewelry there as well. We got around town on snow mobiles. For two months of the year the mountains were so high we had to go out of town to see the sun. Well I didn't start up planning to write a book! :)
Happy birthday . Hope you have a lovely day.
I looked up Cassiar on Google Images. What a stunning place to live! There is a photo on there of Cassiar Mountains with the clouds way lower than the mountain tops! Must have been great for your kids to spend a few years living there although with the asbestos mining, truly lucky you didn't live there permanently...... The Klondike Days sounds like so much fun and travelling on snow mobiles sounds amazing! (I've never been on one).
Happy birthday to pythonesque! 🎈
birthday to pythonesque!
that's nice that you looked up Casiar. My daughter and I have kept in touch with some of the friends we had there. She was only 7. When we eventualy moved where we are now, we discovered there are three familys who also ended up here. Of the ones we are in touch with none got sick from working there. Some chose to have regular check ups for a few years. There is a documentary on line that is on the mine being shut down and the town completely obliterated. All those living there, some of whom had lived their all their lives got an unreasonably low pay out. The wages were high and very nice houses were all rent free. But when they closed the company down, people also didn't have any equity in land or a house so they had a hard time getting a new start somewhere else.
, that documentary would be interesting to watch. Very good news that the miners didn't suffer poor health but really bad that they were left high and dry after the mines closed. :(
