Are there any tips or tricks to this or is it completely chance by selecting spaces nearby when he says you are getting close?

I just go backward when it says I was closer before. I think it's mostly luck. This last game I started at about 3 columns over and 3 rows down and then went about 5 columns over and 5 rows down. It told me I was closer before, so I went back up near 3 columns over and 3 rows down. Then I went to about 2 columns over and 2 rows down. The item above ended up being in the top left corner.
