Some people do. Sometimes battlers will have a friendly competition against a given foe -- like Ice King or something. Mostly it's just for bragging rights and to see who's been good about keeping their pets up to date and farming for tomes and crystals.

Easy - Amulets at wins 50 and 100, Tome at 150 (Scroll Piece at 200) Medium - Amulets at 25 and 50, Tome at 75 (Scroll Piece at 100) Hard - Amulet at 25, Tome at 50 (Scroll Piece at 75) Very Hard - Tomes at wins 15 and 35 (Scroll Piece at 50) Extremely Hard - Tomes at wins 15 and 25 (Scroll Piece at 35) Impossible - Tomes at wins 10, 15, and 20

Is anything different with the bewitched bookcase?

Seems the bookcase drops rare books every 10th win. Random amulets and Tome drops as well.

Fireside will still be ending at 11:59pm on November 30, though Fireside challengers will stick out the week and leave at 11:59pm on December 2.
