I haven’t read any books in quite some time. I tend to fall asleep when I read :/ I am watching Wednesday and, Criminal Minds right now. Also, I’m watching What Not To Wear. Lol

I just finished rereading Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. I'm also listening to a lecture series about her, her works, and her times. I'm planning on rereading all her novels with the insights I'm getting from the lectures. I also finished a Sherlock Holmes pastiche that I really enjoyed: Sherlock Holmes and the Christmas Demon by James Lovegrove. (: Was it you who told me about it?)

I just finished watching Outlander on STARZ, I really enjoyed it. Like I said, I haven’t read in a long time. When I did, I enjoyed Historical Romance and, Murder Mysteries.

I love Jane Austen too . To stay on the movie theme, have you seen the movie version of Sense and Sensibility starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet? Kate Winslet was really outstanding . There is also a wonderful series of Pride and Prejudice starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

I’ve had that on my watch list on Netflix for a while. I will probably be watching it after I finish Criminal minds. My watch list is pretty long. Lol

Hahaa I'm the same. People recommend a lot of shows that I'll add but I never really get around to watching them. I'm currently watching Season 4 of a reality prison show called 60 Days In but I would've been satisfied with watching Season 1 only. My daughter has somehow got me to watch these other ones. I cannot recommend this show. Maybe we could also have lists of shows to avoid lol.

List of shows to avoid is a good idea. Only problem, people like such different kinds of movies.. I guess that’s what trailers are for, right? Even with those, they show the good parts of the movie though! Lol

- It probably was :) I'm glad you enjoyed it! James Lovegrove writes a lot of pastiches, and that imprint, Titan Books, has quite a sizeable line of reimaginings and retellings (some more "faithful" than others.)

(I see that they've published a ton more since I last checked! I am very curious about "The Martian Menace" 🙀 It appears to be a Holmes/War Of The Worlds mashup! I have a soft spot for stories that combine literary characters, and that is certainly a new one for me.)

Welcome to our small talk topic, ! Love your avatar :)

How are you enjoying the Stardew Valley board game, ? I love the video game, but have never played the board game. (There are a lot of incredibly impressive games made by one person, but Stardew Valley takes the cake.)

I just started another pastiche by James Lovegrove, "Sherlock Holmes And The Three Winter Terrors." It's one of those books with a set of separate stories that intertwine. I want to finish it before winter ends :P

(A reminder that in our group games we've got a What Are You Reading topic. I recently raved about a book called Keeper Of Enchanted Rooms in there but will copy my "review" here for non-members.)

"I recently read a lovely fantasy called Keeper Of Enchanted Rooms, by Charlie Holmberg. It's set in Rhode Island, 1846 and starts off lightheartedly, with the male main character (a writer named Merritt) inheriting a house that seems too good to be true and sure enough, it's haunted (at first it won't let him leave.) He contacts the U.S. branch of the organization dedicated to the preservation of enchanted homes, and the female main character (Hulda) arrives to tame the house. It gets a little darker later when a foe from Hulda's past comes back, but for the most part it's a lot of fun with a bit of romance. Discovering why the house is haunted and befriending it so it behaves itself and becomes a character in its own right was quite touching.

(I thought it was a standalone at the time, but there's a sequel coming out in April.)"

Hello everyone,

I forgot about this chat group. I just finished reading The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah for the book club at my library. Our discussion is on Tuesday. I actually cried at a few parts of the book.

I dropped the pastiche I was reading ("Sherlock Holmes And The Three Winter Terrors") because something very jarring happened not too far into the first story

SPOILER (click to toggle) graphic depiction of a dead pet.
I recommending avoiding it for that reason. Not a pleasant surprise at all.

Now I'm going to give "The Wintringham Mystery" a try. My edition came with a very flattering introduction, and it sounds like Anthony Berkley Cox was quite the writer in his day! Lots of praise from his contemporaries. He's new to me, though.

I hate to hear that about Sherlock Holmes and The Three Winter Terrors! I bought all three of his pastiches back in January, but have only read the Christmas Demon. I really enjoyed it, though. Would I be able to skip over that part?

In honor of Masquerade, which do you like better, steampunk or cyberpunk? What's your favorite book/movie/game in either genre?

Transistor is a bit of both, and while it brutally broke my heart and jumped up and down on the remains I can't recommend it enough if you're a gamer who has slept on it until now.

If you like sentient AI, the manga Pluto is a modern retelling of what was originally a "monster of the week" story from Astro Boy, and my go-to for anybody who loves sci-fi but hasn't yet tried manga. It has some amazing twists and delves into what it means to be "human." Finished at 8 volumes, it's also quite accessible.

Remember the Masquerade Murder Plot back in 2010 and the Ziaran History Plot from 2013 (can't find an on-site archive)? Definitely worth a look, for the gorgeous artwork alone.
