I haven't been playing it as much as I've got a bunch of work things and organizing moving states for grad school but I m so excited for the expansion of SV!!! Honestly, one of the most fun Pokemon games in a while. Graphics certainly... leave something to be desired, but I think it makes up for it in the story. Arven is the best boy
Oh yeah, for sure, I’m actually graduating undergrad next fall so I’m about to be up to my eyeballs in grad school prep myself, so I feel you there for sure. I feel the same, I’ve enjoyed my success with shiny hunting this time, though! Though grinding for herba mystica is by no means enjoyable lol The expansions are going to be so cool, I’m super excited for them. Course playing it will likely have to wait until after finals so I don’t fail any classes (ADHD is a joy, lemme tell you) but I’m stoked regardless! Do you have a favorite pokémon? Is it Sylveon?

how could you tell? XD but yeah it's sylveon. I have a fairly nice collection I'm proud of that I've built over the years.
What are you hoping to go to grad school for?
Honestly, the fairy type is so cool, definitely one of my favorites too, believe it or not. XD I’ve got a few that have stayed with me since my very first DS Lite, but most of them have been lost somewhere. The majority of the ones I have now are chilling in HOME and not being used bc I’m afraid of forgetting I moved them and then resetting for a nuzlocke or something and then pOOF. Gone forever. XD I’m going for clinical psych, very excited about it, actually but also so scared??? What about you?

Behavioral ecology. I'll be working (likely) with either daffodil fish or fantail darters studying mating/reproductive behaviors. I have a lot of field experience, as I've been going down to Florida every year for like 5years now and doing shark research, but I don't have a lot of experience on the modeling and coding side, which is really important in behavioral ecology. My mentor is really good at that stuff, being in both the ecology department and the math department so I'm excited to learn how to like, set up experiments and analyze data and stuff. I've been taking a course on how to use R Studio, which is a critical programming language/software for ecologist users, so that I don't look like such a dunce when I get there ^^'
What are you hoping to do with your degree?
Oh, wow, that all sounds so complicated but also super cool! One of my best friends also went to school in a similar field and works in fisheries at a major university as a researcher. He did a lot of work with invasive species? Like he was part of a big project way back (like way back, like 10 years ago lol) concerning lamprey. Went out for field work a lot during his stint in grad school so he always told me all about it. Very cool stuff!
I’m easy, nowhere near as interesting lol I just want to work in some kind of therapy setting, probably government work for the VA so I can qualify for some kind of loan forgiveness after however many years of employment with them and on-time payments. If the cost of loan payments wasn’t so scary to me I’d love to break into the online therapy field, the work from home types who make their own schedules since that field is growing rapidly post-pandemic due to the convenience. I currently work in sales, so there’s loads of potential there too as a fallback in case I have trouble finding work right away after graduating.

I could talk your ear off about this stuff! I'm really hoping we can get funding for a fantail darter project. Their mating behavior is that a male creates a nest, a female lays her eggs in it, and then a male fertilizes and protects them. The more eggs in the nest, however, the more attractive the male is to a female. So there's an incentive to steal other males' already fertilized eggs and thus protect them which is alloparental care, which is parental care given to an organism that isn't related to you. They even have an appendage on their dorsal fin called a "false egg" that is basically just a few little ball that resemble eggs!! They're super fascinating and super adorable!!! It was amazing when I first walked into his lab; it was fish as far as the eye could see. All the benchtops were just fish tanks, and they set up other tables and shelves that also were just fish tanks full of the most adorable little babies you've ever seen! There has to be a couple hundred fish and I told my mentor I'm going to name every single one of them. I'm super excited, but also super scared for such a big change in my life
it can be hard to find a job! Took me almost a year after undergrad to find a job that fit with me. Hopefully you're able to settle into a position that you really care about. Trying to go into VA therapy is really noble! I'm sure it'll be tough too, but it's something that's really important that our government really should be doing more about. Having a plan B is super important though, so it's good you have something to fall back on if things don't go as planned. I kinda winged it, only applying to one school for grad school because there was really only one guy in the US I wanted to work with, and everything else checked all the boxes lmao it was a very difficult few weeks waiting to hear if I got in or not
I love seeing how passionate you are about your field!! That’s so exciting for you, there’s nothing in the world like enjoying your field of work so thoroughly and I hope you maintain that passion all the way through!! I’ve heard that grad school is super tough in scientific fields so I wish you all the luck in the world (although I’m sure you won’t need it, you seem extremely knowledgable about this project)!
Honestly, I’m hoping that I’ll find my niche in the field during this last year of undergrad or during my stint in grad school. I’ve been told by multiple people that I have a knack and passion for my own field that’s admirable but the truth is that I haven’t found my thing yet, y’know? I gravitate towards diagnostics and abnormal psych, and I actually began my degree with the intent of going into forensic psychology before I realized that forensic psych students are a dime a dozen and the field is so competitive that the likelihood of finding steady work there that isn’t teaching is pretty slim so, I redirected to the clinical psych route with hopes to eventually specialize in developmental disorders like ADHD and ASD since my area doesn’t have enough specialists in that area of the field and people have to travel to see any kind of expert in that aspect of psychology. That said, though, I realize that therapy and counseling is also lacking manpower these days which is horrible for people who are trying to get their answers about their mental health and with regards to vets, I have personal experience with it since both of my parents were active duty for basically my entire childhood and deployed many times so I definitely understand the struggles tangentially. The biggest struggle for me has been narrowing down my options because psychology as a science can be practically applied in so many ways that the options are quite literally endless for what I can do with my undergrad degree just on its own.
