The Strange Gentleman beckons to you with a single finger crooked. It seems he's brought a select piece of his own collection here tonight. What a marvelous occasion! He says something but the words are slippery and odd. They seem like real words but as if they were covered in oil they slip away as soon as they're spoken. He is by all appearances in a good mood though.

In his hand he holds out a bottle.

There must be a wonderful whisper contained within! What will it say? What could it mean?

The Strange Gentleman makes a great show of slowly pulling the stopper out. You lean in close so you don't miss anything...

...Well that's not exactly what you were expecting.

The Strange Gentleman seems a little surprised as well, though it's hard to tell beneath the mask. Not all whispers are beholden with great mystery or contain hidden secrets or wisdoms.

Although the smears, both within the pages as well as on the back of the book, bring her great sadness this is among one of her most prized possessions. This book shall bring no more harm to her eight-legged friends, so long as it is in her possession. It was the very first of many books in her collection to aid in her studies of that which bit her.

You look up from the column you are leaning against as a man barrels towards you, clutching his hand in agony. It bleeds red, missing a finger. The pinky finger. He growls at you, "Give it back--" You stare at him, unblinkingly, and take out a jar. You unscrew the lid, and rummaging around, pluck out a single finger from admist its fleshy contents. "You mean this? It is no longer yours. Haven't you heard? Breaking a promise means you forfeit your pinky; do it again and I may just pluck out your eye. Please, do add to my collection of broken promises."

“Showcase a curio from your collection.”

Ah, another chance to shine, and I do so appreciate such chances, Flame mused. But what curio to choose?

From such a vast collection, it was indeed difficult. But before she could even begin to narrow down the choices among her beloved orange wigs, her gorgeous ballgowns, her elegant Masq masks, or her many fiery items, she happened to glace down at her forum signature, and realized the answer was looking right at her.

Of course, how could I have ever considered otherwise?

With a snap of her fingers, fire blazed before her and when it died down, a small chest sat upon the pedestal provided for her showcased item. Inside the chest rested six items only- truly the smallest category of her hoard, and yet the most treasured.

From within, Flame drew a plushie, stroking the top of its head just a bit before snapping her fingers once again to vanish the chest and leave the pedestal ready for the plushie she now presented.

“To many people, this might look like an unremarkable little plushie,” she began. “why, it isn’t even the Collectible Cardale Plushie, merely the plain old Jack Cardale Plushie. But to me it represents everything I love about this NPC and all of Subeta history.

“This is an old, old item. It was originally a trivia prize drawn by one of the original Subetan artists and writers, Quetzal, who was also the creator of this character, Jack Cardale.

"I live in dread of the day it is redrawn, for it perfectly embodies the style of those times. It’s cute and rather unrefined with thick black lines, and the character appears to be not quite an adult yet, as many active NPCs during this period matched the young age of Keith and the other staff, many of whom had NPCs (or perhaps PCs?) representing themselves in the various plots they wrote for users to partake in.

“The best thing about this plushie is its age and the history behind it.

“Today Jack Cardale is known as a staid, even boring, adult NPC of few words. People who joined within the past few years might remember when he arrested Gunther, or when he told the Wizard the SAI didn’t investigate time travel (which is a travesty in itself, as the SAI used to investigate anything and everything even remotely out of the ordinary, but perhaps there’s a story behind it, maybe an investigation went bad or something?), and might know that he has now been reduced to a prison guard for Gunther.

"But back in the day, Jack Cardale was so much more. Just look at the description on this thing:

“The leader of the SAI and the protagonist of the goddess plot is now a plushie! Keep a close eye on him... rabid fangirls will make an attempt to steal it, including Quetzal. But that doesn't matter, because Jack belongs to Quetzal. And Jack likes Quetzal. So ha. xD”

“So much personality! Rabid fangirls! Protagonist! Leader!

“And yet the sad fact is that in spite of being such a mover and shaker around the site, (featured in 4 plots and numerous other mentions such as the choose-your-own adventure with the Wizard) Jack Cardale has only 5 items on the site that bear his name. Another one depicts him without naming him, but only as the vehicle for an X-files joke/tribute item, and the original Jack Cardale Plushie is the best of all six.

Another reason I really like it is due it being the only depiction of Jacks’ adventuring suit. We don’t know who designed this thing, whether it was the SAI, his friend Blake Steele, who used to be as much inventor as adventurer, or even Calvin Blackmoon, with whom Jack seems to have a mysterious relationship as he owns a custom robot pet- but anyway, Jack Cardale used to always wear the suit when he was running around with the likes of King Keith and Shinwa and fighting monstrous undead dragons and even dying and returning to life!

I myself acquired this item as a newbie. During my first weeks on the site I encountered the Galactic plot, where Jack Cardale pleaded for the help of all Subetans to discover why Subeta’s sun had gone dark. He vowed to use science to discover the reason, which touched my heart. I felt it was very brave to rely on science in such a land of magic as Subeta, and I made sure to acquire this plushie at that time in order to have a memento of such bravery.

“I could go on for hours more, but time is rapidly running out and I sense that the other… collectors… would like to be able to speak as well! I just hope that you sense my true love for this item and all of Subeta’s history, especially pertaining to Jack Cardale and the SAI.”
