I sincerely hope custom CSS will stay as an option. I understand that it can complicate things, but I really appreciate the ability to highlight my gourmand pet and reader, among other things. For users with disabilities, I can imagine that custom CSS makes it possible for them to use and enjoy the site more, and having that feature go away might actually end up making the site inaccessible. :/
Glad the sidebar is staying, at least. I love the customization of that, as well.
thanks, I noticed the dual sidebar is for events only, so I kept only 1 sidebar, but that thread is soooo helpful, added lots of custom CSS I didn't even know before
Hey all, I want to clear up a few more things. This got a tad long, but please read through it as it should put us on the same page about the plan for v2!
First, the main thing to remember is that Subeta v2 is still in the very early stages. I know we have made statements before (like "there will be no more sidebar") but what we've come to realize is that it is really too early to be making such statements with confidence. We're still getting our bearings with v2, and nothing at this point is set in stone.
The switch to v2 is also NOT imminent. I feel like a lot of the anxiety and alarm comes from this misconception that, since we keep updating the new site, you'll wake up one day and be forced to switch over. V2 is nowhere near ready for that. There is so much more work to be done, and more importantly, you (the users) WILL be more heavily involved in the process before we reach that stage.
What that means is that we don't need to rush to figure out answers to things like "can we still have custom CSS" because the current subeta.net will still be here chugging along in the meantime - but we WILL have this conversation with you when we can, because we're building v2 for you, and your voice is so important in this process. <3
This is also why we haven't really called for feedback yet; not because we don't care (we care a lot!), but just because we are not at a stage where we can meaningfully respond to most feedback. Even if we do decide on something from a discussion, you might not see actual implementation for a while because there's still so much else to be built first. However, I think we're at least ready to open up to these conversations, as long as everyone can understand that.
I am going to set up a special subforum later where everyone can leave thoughts, suggestions, concerns, etc specifically about V2, for us to read and address when we are ready. (I'll ping siteupdate when that's set up, and likely quote a lot of this post there too.) It may be a bit quiet for now since we're still doing a lot of foundational work right now, but we are definitely looking forward to involving you more!
Subeta v2 is intended to replace the current website eventually, but it's our hope that, when that day comes, you'll feel excitement instead of dread because we will have worked together to build a new and better website you love. That's where we are headed with all the hard work so far. :)

Thank you for this explanation. This is actually why I haven't been closely following the update thread unless pinged, because I figure a lot of stuff is up in the air right now.
I started a thread about what we use custom CSS for with the idea being that whether or not custom CSS is possible, maybe you will be able to implement some of the commonly used quirks into the new site. I hope it is helpful to you in this way.
I look forward to more information to come and the ability to provide more concrete feedback when you are ready.
Thank you, Bug :3 And yay for a v2 subforum
Sorry, wrong thread, just ignore this
All of the clarifications and staff responses are very appreciated. <3 Something I still don't understand is... why do we need a v2 at all? I don't understand why all of the time and effort being put into making a new site can't be used to update the one we know and love already. Yeah, a lot is broken but so much isn't broken too... so instead why not focus on fixing what we have?
From what I've understood from numerous comments made by Keith over the years is that the fundamental coding of this site is too convoluted and broken to really fix it permanently. It's why we keep having problems over and over again. I believe that they're hoping to establish good base coding to build a second version of this site that will not have such issues in the future, and if it does they will be much easier to fix.
Also, keep in mind that this site is fourteen sixteen? years old. If the base coding for this site is that old, it is very much in need of an update. Sometimes when it gets to that point the best update is one that scraps everything and starts over.
I think what I'd personally love the most? Is if you guys just kindof made v2 exactly like v1 (but with much better coding)
It doesn't necessarily need to be vastly improved, most everyone I know just wants things to work smoothly. we like how this site feels just as it is, how it looks, how it functions.
Sure there are a few things I'd love to see added (a second fight button at the top of the battle screen and not just at the bottom would make battles less tedious to do when it's weaker things) The lag + scrolling is just sticky)
But like, the CORE look helps a lot. I've been using an old morostide ish theme for years and I can't even imagine not having these colors up
I remember VERY WELL When howrse decided to overhaul their design and layout and we all just had to get used to it. They took user input but there will always be differing opinions and the rest of the people just have to suck it up and deal. We all know we like this site as it is, so if there's an option not to lose it, I'd enjoy that. (for my few cents on this)
Security? The older the site, the more likely loopholes used to infect/hack it exist.
I’m so glad the sidebar will be back for V2! It’s so useful and holds so much info I want to see at a glance. Full support for keeping it.
