I live in Southern California and I 100% believe we should ban front lawns with grass and go to water-conserving plants like succulents and stone decor. So much water is wasted on front lawns, esp if you live in a neighborhood with a HOA and they will punish you if your lawn looks bad. There are far more important things than front lawns that serve no other purpose than to look nice. I also support using the space for farming, but in a lot of places in America that's not allowed in the front lawn area.

Some ways to fight drought and desertification are by planting trees to do reforestation, covering bare soil with plant matter, (live or dead plant material), trying to avoid too much salt in the soil by irrigating not with runoff water but using cleaner water from rain such as catching it in rain barrels for yards, using drip irrigation, not overgrazing.

One of the things that we can also do is to make sure we plant native flowers and bushes that encourage the local wildlife in the area, especially honeybees and butterflies which are pollinators. Also by planting native flowers and bushes, we are making sure that the ecosystem in our area is balanced as these plants use the correct amount of water for the area.
