I've tried to edit the main post of The Giant List of Usability and Random Improvement 2.0 a few times over the last ~15 hours and the edits just don't go through. The post is currently at 29k characters.
As quoted in this post, forum posts are now limited to 40k characters. Mine is only 3/4 of that and I'm not getting any error messages. I click the edit button (once I've made the edits) and nothing happens.
I'd prefer not to have to separate the list again, but I will if I have to. Still, the site should be able to handle what its limits are set to.
(Side note: previews haven't worked for this post in a long time, but that's not such a problem, although it does cause the page to hang and I have to close it and sometimes lose my edits when I click the button by accident.)
(Second side note: I'm not sure if this limit is actually listed in the forum rules or anywhere useful like that. I had to remember where that quote was.)
We've also made changes to the database to support longer forum posts, to prevent further issues with posts getting cut off. Forum posts now have a character limit of 40,000 characters per post. Furthermore, it will now inform you if you surpass this limit when creating a new topic, posting a new reply, and editing an existing post.
Right, we're aware of the limit, and you don't have to convince us that the site should be able to handle it. This clearly isn't the behavior we intended, and you don't have to convince me that I should fix it, you know? It would really suck if you had to separate your list, and I want the site to work as intended just as much as you do.
Anyway, thanks for reporting this. I can see the error with previewing the post, and I think that may be the same reason you are having trouble editing it. Are you adding a lot of text in your edit?
I will troubleshoot this further and get back to you. Right now, it seems like it is an HTTP error with sending too much data at once, so it may not be a super quick-and-easy fix unfortunately, but I'll figure it out!
Also, you are right that the limit has to be more clearly written somewhere, so I will look into getting that done after this glitch is fixed. I actually thought forum posts are supposed to have a limit of 65,000 characters (according to the character count on the bottom of the reply form I'm typing into right now). So I will definitely have this clarified somewhere official and visible :)

My apologies if I sounded tetchy or like I was trying to convince you of anything! :o I was just trying to be clear without being verbose, as I know that's a problem I have.
Thanks for looking into this. c:
I was only adding this line: "3. Add a like button for HAs to user profiles"
Hm, so I tried adding that line using the same Edit form, and it went through properly. Could you try adding something else to it, I'm wondering if you're still unable to edit it right now?

I can see that your edit has gone through!
However, I'm still having the same problem from my end - whenever I hit the blue 'Edit Post' button to save my changes, nothing happens on my end, and the changes don't take. I can leave the page open for ages or click several times and nothing happens. (I added the rest of my edits from this post, for reference)
I've had no problems editing shorter posts and do so frequently.
I'll be out for the next 3 days, so no rush. xD
Just wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten this issue.
I would like to ask for your help debugging this if it's okay, since I can't seem to trigger the problem for me. Could you please let me know which browser you are using? I will write you instructions on how to use the browser console to see if there is any error when you go to edit it.

Thanks for getting back to me! No worries at all about the wait (I know there are much bigger things to worry about). I use Chrome on Win10.
-- I've been trying sporadically over the last few weeks and edits to the first post never worked, but I just tried again after getting your ping and the edits went through! Nothing I've done has changed, so I don't know why it wasn't working and suddenly did. Unless it could have been my terrible internet connection? We just had a new line laid a few days ago as ours had water in it and was barely working, although I tried editing it over mobile internet as well and that didn't work either. /jumps for joy /sorry for rambling; I'm super sick and there's no need to reply to my random thoughts
I'll let you know if the problem starts happening again, I guess. >.<
Hm... Having bad internet could have caused this, and would explain why the issue seemed to only happen to you. But I guess that doesn't explain why it didn't work on mobile, unless your mobile data was also being slow? Weird.
I can confirm nothing changed on our end either O_o
Well, whatever it was... I'm also glad it's working for you again! We'll keep this bug report open for a bit longer just in case the issue pops up again, you can let me know here.

Well, thanks for your attempts to work out what was going on! I did initially consider it being my internet connection but I discounted that after trying via mobile internet as well. :/
I'll let you know if I have any further issues. c: Thanks!
It's been a few months and it looks like there's been no further issues - think we're good to consider this closed?

Oh, I actually never got it to work again after that, so I decided to split the list up into three separate posts. I'd classify this as still broken (maybe somehow just for me), but I'm okay with the workaround. Feel free to close it up.
