I used the Cronus and ME with the blasters, healers, mecha, and cobalt and fatal fire scrolls. I sort of used a modified version of your strategy to work with what I had, and a lot of luck lol.

So....the Hydragellos Essence is used to make the new slappy hand weapon right? Is the hand worth it? Should I hold onto the essence until next year, or should I use it on Haneul now?

Yep, plus I think the fatal fire scrolls helped with that somewhat, towards the end at least when I ran out of healers. It was enough to keep me alive long enough, at least.

It's actually the Oozing Vial that's used to make the slappy hand combo, not the essence.

To answer your other question, I think the slappy hand combo is worth it if you have an extra Core and earn the regular slappy hand from battling or buy/trade for one (which is what I did). And especially if you can't afford the OHS, it seems to be a pretty good substitute.

It might be worth it to try and get one eventually. But if you don't have the ME yet, you should still go for that one first, since you need a Core to make both weapons.

Yep, it's retired. I know that opponent was brought back a couple years ago or so, but the achievement wasn't brought back with it. That was only available during the Steele plot.
