Exactly and typically the people who do privates SAY they will buy it back if you no longer want it, so why sell it to the pawn to say f you to the person who is supposed to be your friend?

yup, or you let them know and they will let others in the private group know. i know i would never do that, i will get a hold of the releaser and hold onto it otherwise. i think i have a couple where i need to do that but no big hurry, they are still special.

The PS doesn't give you much in the way of a return, but if you need some CSC right now or something has been sitting in your shop for over a year (or in one case, two years) it's worth it sometimes.

I suspect at least some of the privates in the PS were there because people bought them from the PS or from user shops before, not knowing what they were. Then when they tried to sell them they ran into trouble.

There's also the thing where people lock items up and declare them private after the fact. This does happen.

I had to yank something out of my shop when I realised the releaser considered it private, but I know I had no idea it was ever going to be private when I slotted on it, because I have a spreadsheet and I make notes of those things. I ended up deciding to keep it because I found an OC who would use it, but it was embarrassing.

I have also bought things that were unlocked in people's shops and later seen them listed as privates in their release listings. Some of them are items that I bought when I was new to Subeta and I know I didn't ask for an invite because I had too much social anxiety then, being new, to comment or smail anyone about anything!

I have mixed emotions about the entire issue of private items.

I will always respect the status of any private items I buy because I'm not an asshole who doesn't keep agreements made voluntarily and without duress, plus I respect the feelings of my friends even when I don't understand them. And I don't sell privates I pick up on the fly from user shops, the PS or giveaways--if I know that they are privates.

At the same time, I came to Subeta from Gaia, where you had to either find a ticket in a chance item or pay literally hundreds of dollars to buy them from the Cash Shop there, and unless you bought the very most expensive ticket they offered, you could not control who bought anything you released. You got 10 copies so you could make sure that your friends had the items (also, most Gaia items are transformable, so if you want to wear a whole outfit you need to own multiple copies of items), but the items were put in the cash shop or sometimes in cash shop chance items. You were not allowed to control who got stuff you released as a general rule.

(And people were dicks about undercutting releasers selling their own copies. They wouldn't even wait a damn day before slashing prices in half. It's one reason why I quit releasing over there--I couldn't get enough Gaia cash/gold back from my releases to make the recolours. I'd save a few copies for myself, and a few for friends, and sell the rest. But the only item that ever turned out to be a money maker was the one item that I didn't WANT to be a money maker -- Tessa the Thylacine. I wanted that item to be attainable so that anyone else who loves the thylacine could get one. I did two recolours, which are easier to get, but even so.)

Anyhow, the Gaia attitude was that if people paid real money for something they have the right to do whatever they want with it, and honestly, I don't think that is wrong. I keep my agreements, but I honestly don't understand why some people make private items to sell.

I understand making private items as Lumi or special occasion gifts (and I have a few that I treasure). And I get tribute items to the departed, be they human or pets, and items to honour friends on special days. Although the tribute item to my cat was a public release and I am actually tickled pink that other people wanted to buy him. :)

But I don't really understand the mindset behind selling something but only allowing a small select group of people to buy it. If I'm willing to SELL something...I have emotionally let go of it.
