It's not as weird as you think.

Breastfeeding frequently suppresses menstruation because it suppresses ovulation, which prevents another pregnancy from starting while you are breastfeeding. (This doesn't work for everyone though.)

Getting pregnant while you are breastfeeding is really hard on the body, as you are now eating for yourself, the baby you're feeding, and the new fetus. Nowadays with good medical care and an abundance of food, it's easier to deal with than it once was, but imagine living in a situation where food is a scarce, labour-intensive resource, most people do not get enough animal protein (and the supplements that make vegan diets survivable do not exist), and having to feed a child who has already been born while pregnant. Your immune system would get run down, so even if the food insecurity didn't lead to illness or death for you or one of your kids, you'd be vulnerable to any illness that came along, and in the days before antibiotics, even a small cut could get infected and lead to sepsis.

Therefore, while not everyone is genetically programmed this way--as it is possible to survive this when times are good, so people without this adaptation have not died out--more people are programmed that way than not, because women who were not constantly breastfeeding while pregnant tended to live longer and have more babies survive.
