So listen, my mind is like a sieve and over here people tend to call anything with rice and at least one non-standard vegetable ""asian"" lmao (what do you mean there are different countries and cultures over there??), but when I was in the US last year I went to a Korean restaurant with my family and we had a dish served in a heated up stone bowl? So, uh...that. That could be an item, that was cool /fail :P
Subeta is utterly non-relatable because there are all those top crust items called 'pie' that I have never seen in the flesh in my life nevermind eaten and yet it's supposed to be generic, haha. Where are all my boiled sweet/savory dumplings at? What about -insert ingredient here- soups? Sour milk? Potatoes other than as fries??
....thanks for making me hungry for my aunt's take on coulibiac, we put mushrooms and sauerkraut in ours bc tbh half of Polish cuisine is mystery pickles (the other half is potatoes and possibly pork)
Not sure why you pinged me but thanks?
I am saying you did not read my whole post
Looking for these : x100
so are you saying theres already too many chinese food items or are you just trying to show the OP there are some? confused what you're saying.
they can always add more food items, so i support this suggestion. pork floss buns please :D
I am saying there's some already I guess I didn't make myself clear ^^; and you also almost gave me a heart attack I thought I did something wrong ^^;
Looking for these : x100
Bento is Japanese! :)
The same concept in Chinese culture is called 飯盒 or 便當 (the latter is a loanword from Japanese).
(Fun fact the Japanese word 'bento' was borrowed from the Chinese word for 'convenient' in like, the 13th century, and now (a ton of centuries later) we've borrowed it back with its shiny new Japanese meaning of packed meal lmao.)
Oof, stone pot rice!! Yess, I love that stuff!! T^T For me it's usually more of an experience- the kind of thing I'll eat with other people cuz its fun, rather than going out alone to eat. I think mostly because I burned my hand a tiny bit once and then I was like "ok this is Fun but not that fun ?" asdfghjkl.
And-- I keep assuming pie is like, relevant to the American consciousness or smth because I see it so much on subeta and also on the Tasty youtube channel (feels like there's a pie video every other week asdfghjkl).
(so marshmallow and sweet potato pie is a thing in america right, and while i think i have mostly accepted it now sometimes i still see a related item in my food gallery and i stare for a moment because sweet potatoes are so... ingrained in me as a savoury food...) (i wonder if it tastes good T^T) (same with pumpkins too!)
Mystery pickles!! :D !! We have so many marinated/pickled/brined/fermented veggies in China and I live in fear of so many of them!! (//cries) (also: potatoes and possibly pork sounds ominous to me for some reason and i don't know why) (possibly pork-- or is it) (dun dun dun)
PORK FLOSS BUNS !!! ? i had one last week but like it's a... sob story... either it had sat in the bakery too long or i let it sit too long and the floss was like.,. all icky. damp... you could say it was..,..,.. soggy ???
But oof I'm super hungry for sausage buns or maybe just raisin buns now. Chinese bakery bread is... the Best bread T^T (even the sliced white bread here is really good and nothing even similar to western supermarket sliced bread) (oof I gotta buy some) (today) (at lunch) (... yes)
(pearl tea bread has been all the rage for the past 6 months or so and i also. i also need that) (tapioca pearls with sweet milk tea cream stuffed inside a soft bun... o(≧∇≦o) i need it in my mouth right this v moment)
oh NOOO :( thats sad. i could eat pork floss all day but its so unhealthy LOL
ya dude, idk what they do to it, but i guess its like the milk bun flavor or idk but it just tastes great.
duuuude pearl tea bread? that sounds BOMB? ummm need?
lolol dw
I love Chrysanthemum Tea it's so good as for my family they can't stand the sweet stuff
Looking for these : x100
(there's bubble tea bread.,. bubble tea cake.,. bubble tea roll cake.,. bubble tea toast.,,.)
(look at this compilation post of coops' bubble tea cake pictures and gifs) (it's in chinese but it's also mostly pictures) (oh man it's so pretty ヽ(;▽;)ノ )
(oh man look at the gifs on this post too) (//weeps)
=0 that sounds great! i buy boxed six packs of chrysanthemum tea so that probably removes most of the health benefits for me T^T (this stuff!)
chrysanthemums are so pretty as well(´▽`)love when i get those particularly nice flower buds that bloom Perfectly in water. i can pretend i have stepped into minimalist flower aesthetic for 0.5 seconds before i glug the tea lmao
T^T Bubble tea is... oof, my fave drink, definitely, for sure, absolutely! Apparently even my phone knows it cuz my mobile google news feed had a 'how to improve your boba habit' news article last week.
(apparently I can cut down from full sugar to half sugar to no sugar) (or get pearl tea without the pearls) (or ask them to use an alternative milk.)
(google I have literally never expressed to you my desire to lose weight or eat healthier) (pls) (why)
(i was so horrified and morbidly fascinated by that article) (are there really people out there who get their bubble tea without the bubbles) (do these people exist) (why would you buy bubble tea) (fgndgndfng)
The stone pot rice dish, do you guys mean dolsot bibimbap or maybe dolsot bap? (My family refers to the latter as a kind of nurungi.) — I would love to see street foods that are popular in Asia (and all around the world tbh) represented on Subeta. — Tteok would be perfect traditional sweets for the Shengui Guo Tea House.

:D dolsot bibimbap! there are at least 3 restaurants specializing in dolsot bibimbap less than 4 minutes walk from where i live XDD (i also live in apparently the most urban place on earth, so maybe not surprising lmao). it's defs popular here aaa.
i'd love to see tteok T^T. desserts/sweets made from rice and glutinous rice flour are things i totally need more of asdfghjkl. there's also a tradition of rice/glutinous rice desserts in the vein of mochi and types of tteok in hong kong and china, but it's definitely more scattered? no overarching label like 'wagashi' or 'tteok', just a lotta... disconnected stuff that's all kinda well-known on its own. lmao x')
(i'm super craving pan-fried rice cakes w/ red bean paste now) (ack) (they're called 燒餅 but i couldn't find an english wikipedia article on it lmao) (actually i'll settle for put chai ko too T^T) (gotta wait for money in my bank account tomorrow lmao)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaobing for 燒餅! my favorite breakfast food!!
Get me on here.
I'd also just take like... a jar of pork floss, because every once in a while you just get that craving and it's. Amazing.
I also really really would like maybe Peking duck? But like... not the whole duck like the current roast duck item. Instead like how it's served with a paper-thin bing and sauce and sliced green onion and then the duck. Give me the whole package. Please.
I would also go for some other breakfast classics, like mantou, or furu (any of the flavors, but especially spicy wrapped in cabbage), jianbing, Wotou
ALSO ALSO Hong shao rou (red braised pork belly) Mei cai kou rou (Steamed pork with preserved mustard) Fen zheng rou (Steamed pork with rice flour) Jiuniang --> bonus points with dried jasmine flowers? Tang yuan? Egg drops? ALL THREE? And piggy-backing off that, Mijiu Zongzi, which I think we don't have right now which is... depressing, since it's a major festival food. I'll take it in both sweet and salty varieties please.
I don't know if anyone mentioned Chinese-style BBQ buns (steamed and crisp variety, both are good). I could go on and on forever about this. This is making me super hungry. I'll definitely come back when I think of more foods because I'm definitely still forgetting some of my other favorites lol.
pork floss is too sweet for me generally D: i love pork floss but i gotta get the expensive stuff cos i can't stand the cheap stuff- it's so... sweet..,. the texture,,.,. ick.,.
i mean i say this but i'll still eat pork floss buns and anything with pork floss in them rip
WAIT PORK FLOSS EGG ROLLS oh god ok nevermind i'm a whore for pork floss cos one time a pedestrian brought in a whole box of expensive high quality pork floss egg rolls as a gift for my boss (i.e. a gift for everyone in the office to eat), and in in the end i ate like... half the box... even tho there were 4 other coworkers with me.,. LMAO
AND YES PLS CHAR SIU BUNS /o/. (sobs) i'm eating one right now !! also with uh whatsitcalled. pot rice??? dim sum rice????? what on earth is it called in english. there's a really nice teatime discount for it from a place 5 minutes away from me.
(by really nice i mean) (normal price is 20HKD) (between 2-6 it's.,. 18 HKD) (and only for the ONE pot rice on offer that day) (which today was steamed chicken feet and pork ribs) (and i hate chicken feet and i hate bones) (but) (i'm an absolute prostitute for cheap things so) (oof)
oooo i think we have tang yuan onsite already! i would really love to see more varieties tho T^T. like how we have diff mochi item lines
(also oof it'd be amazing if the art for tang yuan.,. could be updated) (sobs)
(tho we also have this:
so maybe it's ok ;-; )lol I don't eat pork floss enough these days for it not to be a hot indulgence every time. I've never had a pork floss egg roll before but it sounds amazing.
Ooh I didn't know we had the sweet rice ball soup. But mostly I mentioned it because I'm a sucker for mi jiu tang yuan with a good sprinkle of dried jasmine and egg lol, so in my mind whenever I talk about jiuniang I gotta talk about tangyuan too. It's just... nice to have other things besides just the tang yuan and the water.
Also yes yes yes yes yes to different tangyuan varieties like peanut and black sesame and red bean and lotus paste. On that related note, what if we had different flavors of mooncake too? I feel like there is one already on the site but I can't remember it's name so I'm not sure if it truly already exists or not, but you know how we all get crazy about our fillings.
I'd love to see some more asian food, especially pastries and desserts! It would be nice to see some pastries from South East Asia like Indonesia, Thai, Philippines (like Pandesal, Buko pie, buns and brownies with ube flavours). Also pandan chiffon cake, moon pies, steamed cakes and dragon's beard candy would be great to have. My pet Marikit would love any of these!
