... clutching the still bleeding diary, she ran out into the road. The snow prickled her skin and the wind danced her hair and skirts around her, but she did not care, staring into the distance without knowing what she was seeing, only for what she was looking. Who had that man been? Where had he gone? How had this happened? She looked all around her but saw no shadowy figures, no fresh footsteps. The blood oozed, dark and ichorous, from the book, dripping down her leg and staining her stockings and the pure, white snow.
