Pet names with . before any name

I shelled out money to rename some pets one of them was sadly .Xander. What I did not know was punctuation can not be used before the name, only after. otherwise you get this: 403 Forbidden nginx/1.14.0
I can only access my pet from the personal drop down menu or insert the pet ID number to even look at the page. :/ not exactly practical. (I have filed a ticket. waiting on that.) apparently another as well.

I noticed this earlier and have reported it :) I will let you know what I find out. It actually happens with punctuation after the name as well ;)

I made a board about this same issue back in August... Can&;t Visit Pets with Period in Front of Name
Have also had no trouble visiting my pets Tobi Peach or any others, so I haven't noticed the same problem with petnames with punctuation after alpha characters?

Maybe not then. Someone told me it was affecting them too. The current workaround is to visit the pet by their ID url.

I've spoken with about this and it sounds like there may not be a solution. It might be one of those things where we offer a free name change, or you can choose to keep the pet name but accept that the URL will not work correctly. I will try to look for other solutions, but it sounds like we may end up disallowing it. I'll update again once there is a concrete answer.

Is there something that changed in the recent site/code updates that triggered it to not work? Or have they always been that way? I was fairly certain they used to work, but now I'm doubting myself tbh.

They used to work, but only due to a (rather severe) flaw in our site security. Luckily, no one had exploited this flaw, and we fixed it as soon as we realized. However, the fix also inadvertently disabled this feature. This is also why we may not be able to restore it.

Ahhh, that makes sense. It's sad that there may not be a solution, but it's good you guys caught the security flaw! Hopefully something can be worked out anyways. Good luck! :)

Ahhh welll... poop. Good that the flaw got fixed - YAY!- boo that there is no fix, I am for disallowing like any other characters not allowed. Psst - Free name changes = bonus <3

If we have a pet name with a . before it should we change our pets name then?
I'd wait for our decision to be finalized, unless you want to spend the CSC. If we end up disallowing it, we will probably offer free name changes to be fair, so if you wait then you can save the CSC.

I really hope this can be resolved. I have 5 pets like this and I'd really hate to have to change all their names, esp as most of them are tribute pets ;___;
Hello, back with a big update.
Unfortunately, we are not able to resolve the issue in another way. Pet names beginning with a period (.) will not be allowed after this point.
If you have a pet with a name like this, you are not required to change it; however, we will not be able to fix the issues around the name. You may file a ticket for a free name change for any pets affected. Simply let the UA know what pet(s) you need changed and what names you want for them.
Your Pets page will show a notice if you have any pets with names that break the current naming rules, along with a link for filing a ticket should you wish to change the name for free.

Thank you for the update! Just so I know can they have a (.) at the end or just not at all?
At the end or middle should be fine. It seems to cause problems only when it is the first character.
