We are currently looking for new artists to join our creative team. The position will be on a full-time basis, and will be working on an art team in order to create illustrations according to site needs/prompts and well as contributing ideas for site events, plots and new games. The kind of art needed is varied, everything from items and wearables to pets and large art (such as game art, maps and flavour images)

Perks of the job
In your application, you will include at least 3 examples of items, 3 wearables and some forms of larger art (pets, npc, area art). The larger art does not have to be completely polished pieces, but we’d like to get an idea of your anatomy and colouring/shading abilities. The items and wearables should be finished to the best of your ability.
To note, there are certain pet species right now without an artist. If you would like to include a pet in your application, please note our preference to the following species: aeanoid, bumbus, chelon, clawsion, dillema, illumis, pherret, popoko, torrey, tutani.
If you are interested in the position, please email [email protected] with the title ‘Artist Application - Your Username’, your resume, a portfolio that includes the above art request as a minimum (this can be uploaded as email attachments, it doesn’t have to be an external site) and a cover letter telling us why you’d be a good fit for the position. We’re looking forward to hearing from you!
We will be taking applications until 11:59PM on September 16th 2018. Please get your applications in by this time. Interviews will be conducted over Discord, which will be discussed via email!
- We pulled our artists , and out of the CW market, and while we let them do the odd commission they honestly end up not having the time or drive to do them - their item ideas just end up as official items instead for the most part. So it's not a total conflict of interest, but we'd expect to see far less participation naturally.
We probably wouldn't be ok with somebody doing hundreds or even dozens of things for the CW market, it would detract from the work here! (We're hiring to buy your ideas!)
- Our staff artists still do overlay commissions, and external commissions - as long as they're not drawing for other petsites we're fine with freelance illustration work on top of this job! You're right in that most of our artists just don't have a lot of time for that on top of what they do here :)
- Yes, we do still use a points system. I'm not comfortable divulging all of the details in public, but a full-time artist is expected to attain 180-240 points per month. Although it's technically a monthly deliverable, we do not let our artists upload everything in one go and ask for the work to be spread out in weekly check-ins. Only items are 1.5 points, wearables all have different point values depending on their detail. Pets and NPCs are different point amounts. Our artists do a mixture of things based on what's required in order to hit a points total.
Some artists draw faster and can hit their points total in fewer hours - and we have a process in place for that too.
- Items are drawn at 128x128 pixels and once they're done we flatten the image, sharpen it a bit and then resize to 64x64. Black lineart in general, yes. I use a hard round pressure size 3 brush (one of the basic ones in Photoshop) to draw my items, and I don't really colour lineart (I'll usually use shading to define things if the lineart looks too heavy).
We all have different methods to get to the finished item so it's hard to give you an exact method, but your aim is to match what's on site.
- We've had a few artists leave us since the last time we opened up applications, so sort of! Mostly it's just time for some new ideas :)
- A dropbox folder is fine, although I would suggest it not being very full of things. You essentially want a folder with your best representations of what you can do. References are likely not required for this job, we'd discuss further if we needed them at the interview stage.
- All pets not on that list do have an artist, yes! The lain was done in all colours for a while, and the storm is being worked on currently :)
- I'm not sure what you mean - I don't want to see replications of what we already have, but at the same time I would rather see new things than redesigns (unless you're redesigning something so old that it really could do with an uplift. Like the book nook keeper). I want to see that the artist is capable of being inventive and able to design. The portfolio can contain work done outside of the required submissions as long as the required submissions are also included.
Include what you feel best represents you and that you think would make me hire you as a Subeta artist.
- show me the files in the way you'd like me to see them, that you feel best fits the job in hand :) (But yes, pngs for large art and wearables, gifs for items)
Thank you to everyone for their applications. We'll be going through them shortly!
- I had to put it on hold for a bit due to a medical issue. I apologise! Hoping to finish this weekend.
- Still a bit on the ill side, but I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel, thank you for asking!
I've had to delay going through applications for reasons but really hope to be able to get back to them soon, and I'm grateful for everyone's patience!
