"Oh," Blade replied with not really knowing how it works. "Really?" he asked excited. "That's great! So...er how do I work this?"

"Like this." Callista took the earbuds out of the package. "These plug in here, and these go in your ears." She put one of her own earbuds in her ear to show him. "It will run out the batteries if you use it a lot and you'll have to recharge it, but, for instance, sometimes when my mind is racing and I need to sleep, I'll play some nice and quiet music and listen to it as I fall asleep, and I don't disturb anyone else in our room."

She then instructed him in how to use the app.

"Neat," Blade said. "Music can be very soothing." He was impressed with all the music available. "Wow." This had to be his favourite thing about the phone. "What's your favourite thing about these tones?" ((he means phones.))

Callista thought for a long time. "Well," she began, "I guess I'd have a hard time picking just one thing. I like the music, I like texting, and I like the camera." She scooted up close to Blade so he could see her phone. "I use texting to keep in touch with friends all over the world. I also use the camera to send them pictures, both through Instagram and just personal pictures. The camera also helps me remember cool things I see that inspire me for designs, and I can even use it for schoolwork. If I don't want to have to copy out a long passage from a library book by hand I can just snap a picture of it."

She showed him some pictures and not too personal texts, and also a couple of snaps she'd taken in the library to save herself some trouble. Long passages took time to copy and she didn't like to risk getting tired and making a mistake when copying out spell instructions.

"But I also like the Internet--when I get a chance to use my phone, I can check up on all the latest trends and news."

"Your idea of the picture for books is a really good one," Blade said impressed. "Oh that's right you were gonna show me this testing thing. Can you show me the instanet?" he asked.

"Right, texting. Like text, in a book. Text messages. Let's do that one first and then I will show you the internet." Callista sent Blade a message:

Hey this is Callista! Testing Texting one two three, she typed, and added a picture of Sabrina when she was a tiny kitten.

"That ping is letting you know you have a message," Callista told Blade when she heard the notification. "Open this and you'll see. Touch the bottom of the screen right here to reply. A board comes up with the letters in the funny order that Muggles use for their computers--I'm not sure how they came up with it--and you can touch each letter and the space bar and write me a message back."

"Ah okay, that makes sense," Blade said. He was amazed when she showed him the text. "Wow. Neat." It took him a ridiculously long time to send his reply back. Hey. Blade here. He seemed very pleased with it though.

Nicola grew up with her non-magical mom using a cell phone all the time for work, and play, so she knew a bit, but all models are different. She had gotten her own phone recently for home, but it was an iphone. Looking around for a partner Nicola sees Niamh looking around, too.
"Do you want to work together?"

Nicola Stromwing, Hufflepuff

Niamh looked round and spotted a Hufflepuff () she hadn't spoken to before. "Yeah, sure," she replied, "have you got any idea about these phone things? I'm totally lost with this."

Nicola's relieved she found a partner.
"I know a bit a as my mom is non-magical and my family has them. Mostly we use them to talk to each other or play games. I don't know the technical stuff, but they can be fun."

You're doing great! Callista sent back, with a picture of her sister's fossa as a baby and a smiley face.

Niamh looked at the diagram again, and picked up the phone. It didn't take her long to find the power button, and she held the phone in her hand as it powered up. Suddenly Niamh jumped and dropped the phone on the table. "It vibrated," she said, "is it meant to do that?"

Nicola smiles as she turns on her own phone and it vibrates too. "Vibrations and ringing are how the phone gets our attention. Sometimes they even play songs." Opening the phone feature and looking at the back of the two phones. "Should we try calling using the phone?"

Niamh stared at the phone, "aren't muggles weird that they wanted it to shake to get their attention. I can understand it making a noise, but why does it have to shudder?" She wondered if she would actually be able to figure this out enough to get some house points for Gryffindor, seeing as almost everyone else knew quite a bit about phones already. Leaving the phone on the desk, just in case it vibrated again, she looked to see if there was an obvious button to make a call. "Would that be this button then?" she asked, pointing towards the "phone" button.

"Yes, you got it. I will walk across the room and you can try calling me using my number we will input together here."

Niamh held the phone in her hand with a slight wariness, just in case it vibrated again, and waited for Nicola to stop walking. Pressing the numbers on the screen, Niamh guessed at pressing the green phone marked "call", and nearly dropped the phone again as it played some electronic-sounding tones before it make a strange ringing tone. She heard what she guessed was Nicola's phone ringing, and was pleased to spot the Hufflepuff answering it. "Guess this means I got the number right then?" she said as Nicola answered.

"you did wonderfully, Niahm. Sorry I didn't warn you about yours making noise too. How about we hang up and try texting? It will do the noise thing and vibrating, too."

"Sounds good," Niamh replied, "so texting would be like sending a message by owl, right?"

Millie was very familiar with telephones and smart phones. She reached down and brought out her smartphone, which usually stayed in her bag or bedside table while she was at Hogwarts. Her mother was a German muggle who was very determined to have the newest technology. She had gotten lost in the game and realized she was supposed to be working with someone. She looked up and saw everyone else had a partner. She shrugged and went back to have her game kitty steal things.

Lysandra: Lysandra frowned. She had heard from this kind of muggle communication before yet it didn´t concern her so far. In Hogwards, they used owls for carrying letters or crystal orbs when it had to be a quick conference. Back home in the elven forest, nobody used such weird devices anyway. They also had magical animals for transporting written messages yet mostly, they communicated by telepathy. That is to say, the adult elves did it this way. Lysandra wasn´t able to use telepathy at all so far and it would take a lot of time until she could do it effortlessly.

However, this lilac-rose-gold smart phone she picked out of Professor Brookvales basket looked beautiful and felt smooth and cold to the touch. "How do they go on?" Lys asked her friend Chell, cautiously turning the phone to and fro.

Chell: Amused at the lesson in muggle technology, Chell giggled, and grabbed a sleek black smartphone. Until just last year, she hadn't known a single thing about the magic realm, so she was suddenly hit by a wave of nostalgia.

Chell had never had a smart phone herself, but a few girls at her previous school did. She remembered how excited they were chatting about things like Instagram, Snapchat, and Candy Crush at lunch. She wondered if any of these applications were installed on the device. Turning it over, she noticed the number on the back, "Lys! Check it out - try to call me!" seeing the half-elf's confused look, she explained, "Push this button here to turn it on. Then tap the little phone icon to make a call. You can then proceed to dial these same numbers and voila!" she smiled.

Lysandra: Lysandra did as she was told and jumped at the loud noise coming suddenly from Chell´s little black phone, reminding her of march music. "Huh! I hope we are able to change the ringtone!" she exclaimed. Silently, she hoped for some harmonic harp tones or the latest wizard ballad on her own item.

Chell: Chell quickly changed the ringtone on Lys' phone to something a little softer than the harsh default tone while she wasn't looking. "Here! I'll call you now!" she said as she dialed the number that was written on the back of her friend's phone. The device in her hand let out the soft melody of a popular Muggle song.

Lysandra: Lysandra tipped the green phone sign after a soft and harmonic music ringed out. "Hello?" she asked, low-voiced, to not blast Chell´s ear.

Chell: Chell held her wand to her throat and cast a spell to change her voice, "Yes. Ms. Linrëthil?" the quiet voice of the headmistress coming from her mouth, "You've won a cute cat sticker for being the best student in all of Hogwarts!" Chell said and placed the prize on Lys' lapel, "Have a lovely day!" she giggled and set down her wand, her voice returning to normal.

Lysandra: Thunderstruck and with gaping mouth, Lysandra positioned herself more erect. A call from the headmistress herself, what could that mean? Was she in trouble? She didn´t remember doing anything bad exactly in the last weeks bar that lab incident last Saturday night yet how should Mrs. Persnickety know? By magic?

Lysandra shook her head and focused more on taking in the message, then she heard Chell giggle. "You got me!" she exclaimed, good-natured, and laughed. "What else can we do with the so called very smart phone?" the young witch asked, interested.

Chell: "Well," Chell pondered, "There's tons you can do!" she smiled and asked, "Is there something you've wondered?" Chell proceeded to open the internet application and typed in Google, "You can ask this little machine anything you want to know, and it'll answer your question! It's like having an entire library at your fingertips!"

Lysandra: "Oh! How exciting! Let´s ask who passed N.E.W.T.s this term!" Lysandra suggested, curious.

Chell: "Hmm, lets see! Who passed the N.E.W.T.s this term?" Chell asked the little black device. The phone seemed to be thinking for a moment before coming back with another question, Did you mean when are newts born? "Not quite.... maybe it has to be a muggle-related question?" Chell shrugged.

Lysandra: "Muggle related, hm? What about the estimated right numbers of the millionaire lottery? We could invent our own technique devices with that!" Lysandra dreamed. "An automatic universal hair color changer perhaps......" Lys marveled, daydreaming.

Chell: Chell asked the phone, testing how 'smart' it really was. Unfortunately all that popped up were articles about selecting a fair-winning spread of numbers for the lottery. "That would be a lovely device. I would definitely purchase one! What would you call it?" Chell smiled and handed Lys the phone, "Perhaps you could look up name ideas!" she suggested.

Lysandra: "Mmh, what about Crystal Color Caleidoscope ? Pure Paint Prismator ? Or Bye Cry Dye?" Lysandra laughed. "Or an imperative Buy my Dye!" she giggled. "It could go in a set with a rainbow hair curler and straighteners!" she suggested. „For this, we don´t need the brainy bright phone thingy, I think! Yet I heard rumors that it can be used like a typewriter, too. That´s simply not true, isn´t it?"

Chell: Chell laughed, "Those are fantastic names! I'm sure any of them would sell the product no problem!" she could imagine the popularity now. Everyone would have brilliant colored hair and would have the ability to change it any time they'd like.

She snapped back from the daydream at Lys' question, "Oh! Yes!" she opened the messaging app on her own phone and typed Lys' number into the appropriate section. The sent text read: Check it out! You can type anything you want and send it to anyone. Or! Open the little notebook app and type away!

Lysandra: Lysandra tried out the new feature for some time yet got bored soon. "Any other things to do with the phone? Are their movies? Or games?" she inquired, certain her friend Chell would know the answer to this.

Chell: "There are! The possibilities are nearly endless with such device!" Chell explained how to use the app store and put a minor charm on the phone so that most applications were free to try. She told her friend about all of the games she had heard about: action and adventure, dress up, even virtual pets! Chell was mind-boggled by how creative muggles were in their game designs and how they could create such things without even a pinch of magic.

Chell stumbled upon a little game where you could become a witch or a wizard, "Oh?" she giggled in amusement. After a few moments of tapping and drawing she sighed, "Sooo unrealistic!"

Lysandra: "They just don´t know better!" Lysandra stated, matter of fact. "Oh, look, some classmates are already garnering the phones, seems the lesson is over! Pity, it was fun, time flew!" the blue-eyed witch admitted. Reluctantly, she put her gorgeous lilac-gold phone back into one of the baskets which were passed around. "I would have loved to hear some more music!"
