Oooh a BJD thread! I recently got back into the hobby after like five years away, lol. I currently have a Bobobie Apollo, Impldoll Cyril, Migidoll Ryu, Dearmine Lupy, and a Gokidoll Mini Kai head on Dollzone's newest msd body with Dollfamily hands. I'm really happy to be back into the hobby, I finally have a character I'm going to create! He's an Axolotl themed magical boy and my first MSD doll.
Do you guys use Monster high dolls to repaint? I found whats most affordable for me is stalking facebook mom groups that sell their kids monster high dolls in a big bundle for relatively cheap
call me crazy but. after months, it worked. also, interested in seeing pictures of your guy's dolls 👀
I own a dollzone Floy, and really would like to get to taking new pics and stuff. I occasinally look on DOA for new releases, only to see so many nice dolls I cannot afford
I'm not really active in the hobby or the community but I still love my dolls a lot. I have a Luts Cyber Bohemian Shiwoo, a Bluefairy Kyle, and a Bluefairy Sweet Day Louis :-)
A lot of the tips and tricks with repainting playline dolls like Monster High, Ever After High, does overlap with BJDs and I know a lot of BJD collectors that do enjoy playline dolls like that so you're not alone ^^ I have a box full of playline dolls that I've gotten from similar sales... this summer I was hoping to do some customs once I get all the materials, too - Figured I might as well use some Disney Descendants or something for some of my D&D characters. XD It definitely hits the wallet a lot less than bjds do, lol!
Since writing this topic I have been redoing a lot of my BJD collection, though. I'm currently working on selling a lot of my bjds off and I am going to be focusing on several dolls specifically. In time maybe I'll get more beyond my immediate plans but since my boyfriend and I might be moving into a one-room flat/studio apartment in the near-ish future, we won't be having a lot of room anyways... sadly there also goes my dreams for a doll roombox anytime soon... LOL... at least I can store (some) stuff at my parent's house... you know... if I find anything cool at a secondhand store etc... XD
I love ball joint dolls, but they are so expensive! So sadly I don't have one, but a lot of my friends have them.
Always looking for collectables!
I've just got into doll customization. I don't have any BJDs because of the price, but I'd love to try making my own with some clay and resin.

I have always had an interest in the hobby, but really have no idea where to start. One of my friends is super into them and her face-ups intimidate me haha I have no talent so I would pretty much always have to commission things like that
If it makes you feel any better I am going to start to do faceups soon! I am sure my first attempts (and probably a long time after that), will be dreadful, but practice makes perfect and I really want to be able to express myself that way. So if you do get into the hobby and decide to try, I wouldn't let it intimidate you :) Plus there are places you can go, like Alice Collections, where you can buy practice heads for like $25.
As for where to start, I guess it depends on exactly what your interests are, if there is any companies that stick out to you, etc. When I tried getting an idea where to go, I ended up browsing around dealer's websites, like Denverdoll, Alice Collections, etc. and checking out the various companies and noting what dolls I liked. Ultimately through a little trial and error I found out that MSD or 1/4 size is my favorite and I was able to come up with some companies that I really liked. ^^ But since your friend is in the hobby, I am sure they could give you some advice too :)
i collect a bunch!! started the hobby in 2018, though i have to slow down my rate of acquisition; you can afford to splurge when you're not paying rent, lmao.
my favourites in term of resin-quality tend to be dollzone and dream valley, but i've soured on dollzone after they bungled an order and, a year and a half later, i've still failed to receive some stuff i've ordered. no issue with dream valley, and they use the same sort of resin.
for people intimidated by the price, bjdivas is fantastic- twelve-month layaways, and they've been nothing but wonderful and understanding. resinsoul is also great and affordable, but if you don't see anything there that strikes your fancy, i wouldn't purchase for the sake of your first bjd being a cheap one. my first bjd was a switch mara and about $800, and while it took six months to pay off (and i wouldn't recommend dolkus as a dealer, they're who i went through), i haven't regretted it.
I would like to completely make one from the ground up but it's definitely an intimidating idea to me as well. I don't have any BJDs but I do have a strange, vintage poodle doll called Peteena from the 60s that I have been trying to make clothing for.
I have currently a U-noa Lusis on a b-el body (she’s transgender);a Limhwa/EOSDoll limho mono; a Dollits Miso head ... have’t decided what body I’d like to get for her maybe an Iplehouse K.I.D. ‘cause I want to add some height diversity to my crew.
Heads or tails?
I currently have a Fairyland MNF Soony Elf and a Fairyland PKF Luna. I've got a couple of floating heads/face plates, but nothing insane.
I had to sell a bunch due to financial reasons, but I'm hoping once I get a steady income again I can purchase a few more. I miss my Mirwen like crazy!! (And yes, I'm a Fairyland addict, lol).
I've been in the hobby since... 2009? I think? Gosh that's a long time. I've tried my hand at face ups, but uh... I am bad. So I just commission all of mine anyway. :P
Seeing this thread makes me want to be more active in photographing my dolls again. Right now they just sit on the shelf above my head and stare out into the abyss, lol.
ahh it's exciting to see a bjd thread here! i've spent quite a bit of time on a well-know bjd forum & sold dolls there as well (-:
currently own - ♡ feeple60 vampire cygne (chamomile) ♡ feeple60 dreaming elf rin ♡ petit gem rudy (clover)
I can't really claim that we collect them and I'm not even sure they count, but my fiancee and I actually are getting into doll customizing. We're very new at it, but we've been taking old Monster High BJDs and rerooting their hair, giving them new faces, new clothes, etc. We're still very new at it, but it's extremely fun!
