- I don't want to rag on you haha so don't take it that way. I feel like if a company was asking for donations for something essential like servers or code I'd be worried about the future of the site.
It would be different if Subeta were just starting up, but Subeta is a business. The fact that staff dedicate a lot of time to the site shows that it probably a decent paying job for them. I don't want to speak about things I have no clue about, but I'm certain Subeta is somewhat financially stable.
Your reply was fine, there were just a couple certain users who were condescending and sarcastic when they really didn't need to be.
I was suggesting a specific fund for a new server because it takes quite a lot of money down to purchase a dedicated server versus paying a provider to use their servers. Much like buying a house versus renting an apartment: maybe you can afford $500 a month on renting an apartment just fine, but you can't manage the $10k down on a house, even though the house payment would be cheaper in the long run.
I'm fairly certain that Subeta is doing fine for their current needs, but sometimes it takes a little boost to get where you need to be.
I'm going to ask that the thread be locked now since it's been expressed that Subeta's issues have more to do with spaghetti code than servers.
I just want to clarify, no offense was meant on my part and none was taken. I think it's great when people make suggestions trying to help out, even if they're incorrect about things, it shows you care about the site and that's great :)
For what it's worth, web technology has moved fast and your house analogy is no longer how it works in the world of web. Nowadays, it's better for an online business like Subeta to use a cloud provider rather than in-house servers. The cloud provider offers better reliability, flexibility, and scalabability. After the upgrades we did last year, our server situation is fairly good now (aside from a few kinks here and there that come from us learning to use this new provider). I guess a good way to think of the problem, is that it's less about the servers and more about how we use them now.
Still, thanks for your suggestion :)

Yeah, I know you just wanted to help. No worries or hard feelings on my end about anything on the topic, but unfortunately it's a more complicated issue than just getting more servers. :c However, it's been getting better! I know the programmers and staff are working their butts off to fix old stuff while adding interesting new things for the userbase to play with. It's all a big balancing act. Staff-to-user communication has been pretty damn fantastic, too.
Even with this hiccup, you'll still find Subeta nowadays to be way better in terms of stability.
But. None of the replies here boiled down to "users selfish; donations bad"? As I've said in my first post on the topic, there is a general hesitation among people to buy online currency - things you cannot physically own, see or touch. However, people still do buy CSC. People enjoy making and buying custom wearables. People like to buy things from the cash shop. I've noticed people specifically saving up a bit of real money throughout the year for Subeta's Black Friday sales. It's not a matter of selfishness, it's sadly a matter of the idea you've proposed having a very high chance of backfiring.
With buying CSC, you get something back immediately - you get premium currency. At that moment, you don't care what the site specifically does with your money. You trust the company to make its own financial decisions that best suit the current needs of the business. The money you've spent on CSC is essentially getting invested back into the site without you knowing the specifics of where exactly it's going. There is no informercial promise of "send us $$$ and EXPERIENCE THE IMPROVEMENT!" when you're buying CSC.
With the donations... It'll get ugly. I'll say that much with certainty. It's voluntary, yes, but users would absolutely be all over it like white on rice. We all love Subeta and we all want to see it thrive. And everyone who donated would end up being very upset and disappointed if the server Subeta would buy with the donations wouldn't end up fixing the issues.
In a nutshell, that's why nobody was very enthusiastic about that idea. It has nothing to do with people being selfish, or donations being bad. It was a solution proposed with good intent, but without knowing the depth of the problem.
I didn't find you nor Frost to be offensive, haha, it was only a specific one or two who were... brusque. I wasn't aware that it was more advantageous these days, I believe it was only a year or two ago that it was easier to keep a dedicated server.
I am incredibly glad that the site is improving! I've noticed it even in the short time I've been back. I guess it was more the whole... users must get something for their money, more than just the continuation and betterment of the site. I guess I just like to hope that people are more magnanimous than is realistic.
I didn't mind that people were less than enthusiastic, or even outright against the idea, I had just hoped all responders would have at least been polite with their replies. But I guess I'm just the forever optimist :P
