I'm hesitant to change anything on the default profile code because any change could potentially mess up custom profiles. I agree that a prettier default layout would be nice, but not a high priority since they are so easy to customize with your own code.

Try posting in the profile and graphics forums :) I'm sure somebody there would be happy to give you some CSS to fix the spacing issue.
