Personally, I'll probably get the game because I just love Pokémon, and I love all the extra features they've introduced so far, but storywise, I'm not impressed. Sun and Moon weren't my favorites to begin with, and like said, it reminds me a bit too much of BW2 (which I'll admit I loved, though), especially the Necrozma thing.
Then again, maybe they'll learn from some of their mistakes in Sun and Moon, and make a better game in basically the same setting this time.
The Switch is a new console, and partially a handheld, so I doubt they would've just ignored it, honestly. Plus, it takes longer to make a game than most people probably realize... By the time they actually announce anything, it's probably been in planning for years.
Yeah I suppose, it just fits outside their usual MO of focusing on one title at a time. I saw a lot of disappointment on online communities that USUM didn't turn out to be new Switch titles - personally, I didn't expect them to announce something so soon but there are high expectations of the titles, especially in the light of Zelda's fresh approach with the platform.
I'm pretty excited, only because I've been wanting to replay Sun/Moon already so now if I just wait a bit longer I can play USUM.
Just picked it up a little while ago, worried its going to be too much like the last ones. I hope its not as handholdy as the other game. I really like going off on my own adventures!

These are the first games I'm skipping in the franchise for a long time (technically I guess Diamond and Pearl are the last ones, I just didn't have a DS for a long while) unless trusted sources think it's worth it. They don't really seem to have fixed anything I disliked about Sun and Moon - rather added content on top of the wobbly framework and not a whole bunch, at that. The post-game is still pretty lacking, sadly. It's a shame because I love the series but I don't really wanna support this direction. But who knows!
I agree with you, honestly these games have been the weakest. X&Y were exciting and fantastic in my opinion and I wholly enjoyed them but these.... somethings not great... Its a shame, I've followed this series since its inception and grew up with it. I would hate to stop playing

I was... quite disappointed with S/M, I mean they where decent enough games (I'll probably like any Pokemon game, it's just the type of game that appeals to me), but it felt very, very unfinished, which I honestly think it was. It felt like they rushed out SM to catch the Christmas shopping spree last year, and US/UM is what the final product was suppose to be all along.
I've just beat the first Kahuna in UM, so I'm not very far in yet, and I can't give a complete opinion on it, but it is a much better game than S/M so far. The areas look better, you have a larger pick of Pokemon to catch, the story flows a bit better, and some of the very oddly translated dialogue has been removed/changed (not all of it though.). Overall I give it a solid 7/10 so far. We'll see what my final opinion on it is when I finish :P
Let's hope they get their act together for the Switch instalment. I'd say there's a lot of expectation after the success of Zelda and Mario this year, as the other flagship Nintendo franchise. Honestly, there's been missed opportunities since X & Y where it feels like they've withheld key content again and again. I did quite like ORAS and think X & Y had a good core, and had a big task in moving across to the 3DS, but it still felt sparse after you'd beat the main story. Stuff like no National Dex, no DexNav, Festival Plaza existing, no Battle Frontier... it's just a shame, a missed opportunity.
I totally agree, I think the last really good installment other than x&y was soul silver, its been a long time since they've had great games, they've felt a bit weak lately tbh. Pretty bare bones, and the handholding, my goooood the hand holding.

so I started playing Ultra Sun a few days ago (my bro pre-ordered Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon, He's playing Moon) and am hooked. Haven't played the original S/M, so I have nothing to really compare it to, but I rather like it so far.

I was considering getting UM since I played Sun and because I thought there were going to be big changes in the game (also, Poipole is so cute!), but after reading and viewing some reviews I got disappointed that it was pretty much the same as the first games. I also didn't like Sun/Moon, felt very rushed and the Pokemon were not to my taste. Sure, my favorite Pokemon is from that generation but that's it. I also think the Alola versions of some Pokemon were nicely designed. But the gameplay was SO slow for me, I actually had to stop playing it because I got tired of it (that's something that never happened to me before with a Pokemon game!). I barely managed to finish the main storyline but uh... I really don't want to play again :'D
And I hope the Switch game is awesome! It's been so long since we had a platform game!
Geez, I feel like one of those few-and-far-between trainers who genuinely loved Sun & Moon. The Alola region, and so many of its Pokemon, are among my favorites now. I haven't loved a region this much since the original Gold and Silver when I fell in love with the Johto region. Espeon became my favorite Pokemon of all time, and it still is. Sylveon became a close second when X and Y came out, and now I actually HAVE A FULL TEAM of Pokemon that I love as much as them thanks to the editions of Primarina, Mimikyu, Steenee, and Morelull. Like, Alola literally has more Pokemon that rank in my top 10 than any other region.
Now that Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon have been released, I am happy to say that I love some of the changes they've made!! I like this story line much better than before. Lusamine has a lot more depth as a character, and isn't a freaking psychopath this time around. I like the addition of the Photo Club, although I haven't used it much. I love that there are mini quests on the side, and that Necrozma is playing a leading role in the story. AND I FREAKING LOVE MANTINE SURFING, DUDES, THIS IS LIKE THE BEST FEATURE EVER, I literally took breaks from progressing the story to spam Mantine Surf, I am so obsessed with it, omg....
I sure hope I'm not the only one enjoying these games this much! x_x I feel like I'm the only one who prefers the trials of the Island Challenge to regular old Pokemon Gyms!
On that note, I have Ultra Moon, feel free to hit me up for version exclusives if you'd like!
