New part for people who want to read along

((due to some feedback i've received, i am making succeeding parts of this story opt-in. whether you still wish to receive succeeding parts of the story or not, please let me know by filling out a quick form at bit.ly/lovelyoptin and choose the appropriate option (links to a google form.) i appreciate your time and support!))

(Choose between Talk to the woman OR Leave her be.)

Talk to the woman. You feel bad for the woman, despite not knowing who she is. Moved with pity, you ask her if there's anything wrong. It takes her a few moments to look behind her and notice that you're there. She closes her pendant, and re-establishes eye contact with you. You notice that her eyes are damp. It seems like she has been crying for a while.

"It's okay.", she says as she wipes her tears with a handkerchief. You hear her sniffle faintly. "Go on, I'll be okay." She musters to give you a pained smile.

(Choose between "Insist to stay with her" (1A) OR Let her cry alone. (1B)
Leave her be. You leave the woman alone; whatever she is crying about is none of your business. If you interrupt her, you may come across as nosy, rather than concerned. You walk past her, and head to the strip of food establishments close to the city hall.

You recognise Quick Bites, a popular convenience store, among a stretch of fast-food restaurants. Almost every store on the block holds a promotion, just for this day.

You take time to look at what each establishment has to offer, so that you can decide on the deal which appeals to your palate and budget most. As you pass by an electronics shop sandwiched between two restaurants, a breaking news report comes up in the television sets on display.

"This is Nicole Potenger for News Now.

Aria Serosa, primary suspect for the Lower Ziara killings, escaped from the Lower Ziaran Prison at three in the morning."

(Choose between "Keep watching" (2A) OR Decide on something to eat. (Choose between Pizza (2B,) Japanese food (2C,) Chicken (2D,) Soup (2E,) Burgers (2F), and Nothing (2G.))

1A She seems like she needs company more than anything. You don't even have to say anything to her. Your presence is comfort enough for her grief. You offer to lend your ear to her, if she needs to release her emotions. On the same breath, you tell her that she does not have to disclose anything to you if she doesn't want to.

"I appreciate that you care. I really do.", she says, holding on to her handkerchief tightly. "Barely anyone in the city pays attention to the people around them. I can't blame them. Everyone's busy." Her voice carries a hint of lamentation.

"That's true.", you respond. Seeing homeless people in the street is such a common occurrence that it's more convenient to keep walking than to stop and at least establish eye contact with them. If someone is hurt, someone else can call emergency services or a paramedic. Emergency responders and other health care workers, themselves, are prone to compassion fatigue. Problems preoccupy the minds of most people.

"Would you like to take a walk?", you offer.

"Are you sure you don't have to go somewhere else?", she asks.

You reassure her that it's fine. Maybe both of you can go get something to eat. You lead her to the strip of food establishments close to the city hall.

1B "I hope you feel better soon. Take care.", you say. You respect her privacy, but figure it would be rude to leave her alone without a few comforting words. You excuse yourself, and head to the strip of food establishments close to the city hall.

2A Footage of the Galaxan Medium Security Prison plays as the news anchor continues to report:

"A random inmate count at 3:30 in the morning revealed that Serosa was missing.

An investigation within the prison and its immediate perimeter ruled out prison violence.

No leads were found among inmates who were assigned to the same cell as Serosa.

Authorities reported that Serosa was not found in a preliminary search conducted in the Galaxan Wastelands and the Coda Caves.

The Atebus Immigration Office imposed a travel ban on Serosa, who is believed to still be in Atebus.

If you have any information about Aria Serosa, please report it to the Ziaran Police Department."

2B You are in the mood for pizza. There are many establishments that serve Centropolis-style pizza, but out of all of these, "The Belle Pepper's Pi Pie Pizzeria" is closest to you. Balloons decorate the windows, and two flower stands are placed on both sides of the entrance. Although it is styled like a boutique from the outside, you notice the interior, fashioned like a laboratory, to appeal to people with an interest in science, from what you can see through the window.

A waiter on standby welcomes you inside the pizza place and asks you how many people you're with. As soon as you mention that you're alone, he offers you the menu with some of the common flavours -- Cheese, Pepperoni, Hawaiian, Sausage, and Vegetable, among others -- along with house specialties such as the Deep Dish Pi Pie and the Belle Pepper. The pitcher of water on your table is a 1-litre Erlenmeyer flask, and your glass is a 50-mL beaker.

You peruse the menu for the flavour that appeals to you most, and place your order. The waiter assures you that you'll have your pizza in less than 10 minutes. You take out your phone so that you can use it to kill some time, when someone approaches your table.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?", he asks as he points at the seat in front of you.

You tell him that it's not. He nods and thanks you, taking his seat. He proceeds to prop up his laptop on the table and unfold it. While he types away on his keyboard, your order arrives. That was faster than you thought.

The waiter says, "Here's your order. May I assist you with anything else?"

You shake your head in response. The man in front of you asks for a menu, upon which the waiter leaves your table. You do not pay him any mind as you take a slice of your pizza and place it on your plate. Admittedly, ordering a single slice would have been more manageable for you, but you can always ask the waiter to package your leftovers to-go.

"Have you ever thought of meeting someone who looks exactly like you?", the man in front of you asks, not looking up from his laptop. "Are you curious to find out what kind of life your doppelgänger has? Their family, their friends, their work…"

Unsure whether he's talking to you or the waiter, you do not respond to his question.

"I'll be back with your order, sir. Just push the buzzer if you want something else." The waiter returns with a menu and hands it over to the man in front of you, whose eyes are still focused on his work.

The man continues, "Wouldn't it be interesting to experience living as your lookalike, even for a day?"

(Choose between "Excuse me?" (4A) OR "Sorry, I'm not in the mood to talk." (4B))
2C It's a wonder that despite the antiquity of long-since-evolved human cultures, some of their legacies and traditions remain extant. Take food, for instance. You are in the mood to take a trip to the past -- that is, eating Japanese food. An establishment named Nijiiro catches your attention with its Shengui Guo-inspired décor. Historians always say that Shengui Guo's culture is reminiscent of parts of a region known as Asia, in a planet that humans used to inhabit. Artwork depicting a picturesque scene of lovers against a spring backdrop graces one of the restaurant's walls, while lanterns, large fans, and small paintings of fish and cats give life to an otherwise plain white wall.

You approach the counter and look at the menu above it. By the looks of it, this is a fast-food place, although it did not immediately give off that kind of ambience. You place your order and pay for your meal, before taking a seat close to the counter.

While he types away on his keyboard, you tinker with your phone, browsing the latest posts of your friends and family on social media. Somehow, the noise from multiple conversations going on around you, all at once, becomes more tolerable.

A waiter walks past your table, carrying a tray that has your order. He searches the tables close to the front door, before returning to the direction of the counter and serving your food to another person. Oh well.

After a few moments, a waitress approaches your table. "Here's your order. Is there anything missing?"

You shake your head and thank her, in response. The man in front of you asks for a menu, upon which the waitress leaves your table. You do not pay him any mind as you start to eat your food.

"Isn't it great that we still enjoy the food that our ancestors once ate?", the man in front of you asks, not looking up from his laptop. "Take a look at honey, poultry, soup, and all those delicacies we know and love."

Unsure whether he's talking to you or the waitress, you do not respond to his question.

"I'll be back with your order, sir." The waitress returns with a menu and hands it over to the man in front of you, whose eyes are still focused on his work.

The man continues, "If you had the chance to go back in time and see ancient civilisations with your own two eyes, would you do it?"

(Choose between "Excuse me?" (4A) OR "Sorry, I'm not in the mood to talk." (4B))
2D Chicken is a good partner to many other dishes. Soup, pasta, wraps, beer, you name it. You're in a chicken mood right now. A humble food stall named The Flying Chicken catches your attention, touting itself to serve the best chicken tenders and roasted chicken drumsticks in Centropolis. There is quite a queue in front of it, which probably tells you something about how delicious their food is. Fortunately for you, the line moves rather quickly, if only because everyone who places an order is told to take a seat and wait to be served. Before you know it, the cashier asks you to move forward and give your order. Like everyone else before you, the cashier instructs you to wait on one of the seats for your meal.

Tables with umbrellas at the centre are on both sides of the stall. You find a vacant seat, and take out your phone so that you can use it to kill some time, when someone approaches your table.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?", he asks as he points at the seat in front of you.

You tell him that it's not. He nods and thanks you, taking his seat. He proceeds to prop up his laptop on the table and unfold it. While he types away on his keyboard, you tinker with your phone, browsing the latest memes your friends posted on social media.

A waitress walks past your table, carrying two trays, each with a bucket of chicken drumsticks. She searches the tables close to the counter and serves the buckets to the people who ordered for them.

"Here's your order.", says a waiter. "Please enjoy!"

You thank him. The man in front of you follows his order up, and asks the waiter to serve him what you ordered, instead. You do not pay him any mind as you start to eat your food.

"Do you think there are other worlds with other sentient life forms out there?", the man in front of you asks, not looking up from his laptop. "If there were other intelligent beings in the universe, would they enslave us in the future, or can we conquer them? We successfully set up a city in the moon, so I would not be surprised if we can travel to other planets in our lifetimes!"

Unsure whether he's talking to you or the waiter, you do not respond to his question.

His eyes focused on his work, he continues, "If some other rock in outer space is habitable, would you like to live there?"

(Choose between "Excuse me?" (4A) OR "Sorry, I'm not in the mood to talk." (4B))
[spoiler=2E]Some weeks ago, the city had heavy rainfall and grey skies. Soup seems like the most logical choice with the cold weather as of late. Is there such a thing as a restaurant that specialises in soups?

You notice a long queue that curves into what appears to be an alleyway. A sign that reads, "Got Soup?" with an arrow pointing at the alley can be seen on the wall next to you. Walking closer to the alley to see where the line leads, you notice a sloppily painted sign that reads, "Aunt Barbara, Where Do Broken Hearts Go?". It takes you a few moments to notice "Soup Kitchen" more legibly written on the sign. It piques your curiosity and caters to your cravings, so you fall in line.

You think of taking out your phone to kill some time, but it's too risky to expose your gadgets in an alleyway. Someone walks out of the alley with soup in clear plastic bags, which both reassures and frightens you. It lends legitimacy to the notion that inside that alley could lie a soup kitchen, but it bothers you that soup to-go is packed in very thin plastic bags. Shouldn't they use a disposable, biodegradable

Anon, you are amazing!! The story is captivating and I'm intrigued - there's so many questions I can't wait to be answered in future installments. In the meantime I'm in awe of your writing, your art, and just the effort and quality put into this. Thank you so much anon for this experience <3

SPOILER (click to toggle) Jaw dropped when the man walked over to our table (!!!) With the amount of grief Al seems to be in, if the man is her husband, I hope they will eventually be reunited! Though I'm so curious what she and her husband have to do with the news story about the murderer D:

I can't help but think the husband is related to some shady business. Chemical engineering... maybe weapons of war?

The HA is very telling I think. He looks tired but he's also got a laptop and a suit on, so he's definitely up to something!

I kind of hate that people want to 'opt out' or that anon felt the need to have to ask us if we wanted to continue :( I feel honored that anon picked me to participate. It's not like there haven't been times when I wasn't online and then got two boxes at once, anon understands that we're not all online all the time and may not all post after every single storypage.

I chose to talk to the woman. Insisted on staying with her. Went for the burgers, she said no so I chose chicken. Next up is some Japanese food. Asked her name, asked her why she was crying, she talks about her hubby and gets rattled by a man by our table. She asks if the man looks like her hubby...

The new part:

(Choose between "Say that the man looks like her husband" OR "Say that he doesn't resemble her husband".)
Say that the man looks like her husband As you try to remember the face of the man you encountered earlier, you look at the photograph in Al's locket for anything that might remind you of him. You affirm her suspicions and tell her that you can see the resemblance of the man to her husband. She shakes her head. "No. It can't be. I was there when my husband died. Maybe it's just coincidence?"
(Choose between "Ask about her husband" (1A) OR "Remark about the strangeness of that man you saw." (1B))
Say that he doesn't resemble her husband Complete strangers may have a resemblance to someone familiar to you, but they often aren't carbon copies of the other person. The power of suggestion can magnify negligible similarities. You tell Al that the man you saw earlier does not resemble the photograph she showed you of her husband. She bites her lip and hangs her head. "I guess you're right. I was there when my husband died. I have to accept that there's no way to bring him back."
(Choose between "Ask about her husband" (1A) OR "Remark about the strangeness of that man you saw." (1B))
1A With some concern that you may be prying too deeply into the personal life of a woman you don't even know well, you ask her if she wants to talk about her husband while you walk to your commute. She nods wordlessly, regaining her composure. "He was my junior by two years," she begins. "We met in medical school back in the day, fell in love, got married not long after. He gave up his studies and took all sorts of jobs to support my dreams. He was very talented, and I felt like he wasted his life's full potential waiting for me. I was too busy with my residency to take care of our daughter, so he raised her for most of her formative years. He did well, and endured my lengthy absences from our family life. He made more than a few mistakes, but not once did the thought of leaving him cross my mind." Her eyes aglow, Al looks at you as she says, "He's the love of my life." Before you know it, you reach the entrance to the subway station. Al escorts you down the stairs. Both of you present your tickets, and make your way to the platform, when you encounter the man again.
(Choose between "Ask the man for his name" (2A) OR "Confront the man for stalking you." (2B))
1B You tell her that the man you saw earlier had something strange to him. Something about him seems suspicious, as though your meeting was not purely by chance. "What do you mean?", she asks, raising one of her eyebrows. "Did you feel like he was following you?" You consider entertaining that thought briefly, when Al, her face wistful, says, "I was observing him. It seemed like there was something he wanted to say." She lets out a pained laugh. "In my line of work, one can fall into the trap of overthinking every single thing. I try not to do that, but looking at him, it feels like he and my husband are the same person." Before you know it, you reach the entrance to the subway station. Al escorts you down the stairs. Both of you present your tickets, and make your way to the platform, when you encounter the man again.
He places his laptop inside his bag, and falls in line.
(Choose between "Ask the man for his name" (2A) OR "Confront the man for stalking you." (2B))
2A As this is the second time you've encountered this man, it's appropriate to ask him who he is. At the very least, confirming that he has a different name from Al's husband should dispel her distress. "Excuse me, sir. Who are you?", you ask the black-haired man in front of you. He lets out a hearty chuckle, and says, "My name is Makoto. Care to tell me your name, now that I've told you mine?" You introduce yourself to him, and shake hands. A smile on his lips, he diverts his attention to Al and asks her, "Tell me. What's your name?"
(Proceed to 3.)
2B Running into him a second time can't be chalked up to mere coincidence. Just as Al probably followed you, it's likely that this creepy guy had the audacity to stalk you all the way to the subway. You seize him by his shoulder, and ask, "Quit following me around!" The man lets out a hearty chuckle and says, "Our meeting was a mere coincidence, but that said... I should probably introduce myself. My name is Makoto." He steals a look at Al, before he continues, "I'm more interested in her." A smile on his lips, he diverts his attention to Al and asks her, "Tell me. What's your name?"
(Proceed to 3.)
3 A look of shock is on her face for a split second, before she regains her composure. "You can call me Al." "Al? That can't be really your name, surely?" Makoto asks. He stifles his laughter. "It's a lot like her-- I mean, you seem like the type." Al raises her eyebrow at him, a questioning look on her face. "What are you getting at?" With much hesitancy revealed by his trembling hands and his parted, shaking lips, he responds, "The truth of the matter is, you look like my wife, Al. The resemblance is too uncanny, but you can't be her. She died some time ago." You see that Al tries to hide her surprise. "I'm sorry for your loss.", she reflexively says, before she continues, "You too. You look like my dead husband. You even have the same name!" A pleading look in her eyes, she asks, "What is your surname?" "Hiiragi.", he responds. With a look on her face akin to that of a person struck by lightning, Al nearly faints. Makoto catches her in his arms, and locks his gaze on her, just for Al to close her eyes. You ask the people around you if anyone has water and a fan to spare. Makoto releases one of his hands from Al, and searches for something from his bag, with his free hand. He pulls out a newspaper, which he fans at her. Someone gives you a bottle of water, which you hand to Al. Both you and Makoto lead her to a nearby bench, and assist her in taking a seat. The bottle of water still in her hands, Al opens it and brings its mouth up to her lips, slowly drinking its contents. She opens her eyes to see Makoto in front of her, and begins to sob hysterically, asking, "How could this be... am I dreaming? I must be dreaming, this can't be real." He holds her by her shoulders and says, "I can't believe it either. I can't believe I'd see someone who looks just like my wife." Al takes his hands off her shoulders, and says, "I think I need some time to myself." She looks up at him as her lips quiver. "Thank you for living. Thank you… for giving her a glimpse of how he would have looked like if he were still alive." She holds his cheeks in her hands, and he holds her hands, but gently gets them off his face. "If you need someone to talk to, I'll be here.", he says. He pulls out a piece of paper from his bag, and writes something on it.
(Discord: maki#6797)
Beaming a warm smile at her as he places the note in her hand, Makoto says, "Do talk to me sometime, yeah?" He bids her goodbye, and Al waves back, seemingly in a daze. Al shakes her head, and remarks, "I can't believe what I just heard and saw." She nudges your shoulder and asks you to pinch her. You oblige. She yelps in pain, and realises she is awake. "Makoto Hiiragi, is it? He really has the same name as my husband." She leans forward and cups her head in her hands. Without looking at you, she says, "I must have delayed you too much. Have a safe trip." You ask her if she'll be okay. She responds, "I'm confused, but I'll be okay. Go on." The train arrives, just in time for you to bid her good-bye.

My response: I chose he looks like her husband, 1A, 2A, 3.

The reveal is very shocking! If it's true that they are who they are, in relation to each other, how does he not recognize her still... :O

Also "thank you for always posting story parts on the forums!" To the anon and @ Austria who thanked me previously, you're welcome :) I figure a couple things,

  1. people who didn't receive the story firsthand can still experience it if they're interested
  2. for recording sake if anyone wants to go back and re-read parts

and as always thank you anon for the the gifts and the story :)
