Luck, Hufflepuff
Being muggle-born, there were, and still are, so many things I don’t know, and still need to catch up on learning about. One thing I didn’t know about was the different houses of Hogwarts. I only knew what I saw: the house colors and the mascots. From that information I thought about which one I might like to be in the best. As the day went on, on the train-ride to school, I started to overhear about the basic stereotypes of each house. It sounded like Hufflepuff was not a house to be taken seriously or respected. So at first I thought I might like to be in Slytherin; the green and silver were gorgeous and a reptilian mascot is fantastic – I have a pet reptile, myself. On that basis I had prepared a small appreciation for Slytherin, and as I stood in line with all the other first year students, I thought about joining Slytherin. When my name was called, I nervously (as it were in front of a large crowd) walked up and sat on the stool, where the Sorting Hat was then placed on my head. I could hear it whispering in my ear, making its judgment. It finally decided to shout “Hufflepuff!” and the hat was lifted off my head. I was surprised to hear that, and in a blur I managed to get seated at the table with the rest of my Hufflepuffs. Since that day I’ve learned a lot of reassuring things about my house. People try to talk down about Hufflepuff, since it’s true that the founder was willing to take in anyone that the other houses were not. However, I think the qualities that Hufflepuff was founded on are commendable and stand on their own. Hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty and fair play are all concepts that I can graciously get behind. On that first day I was wrong about what I thought I would be, then anxious about where I was placed, but now I’m proud to say that I’m a Hufflepuff.

Max remembered his first day at Hogwarts like it was yesterday. He had been impressed by how huge the castle was. He´d never seen something like this. When the professor picked them up to lead them to the Great Hall he had felt very anxious. He didn´t really know how the "sorting ceremony" worked. The stairs seemed endless to him. Suddenly they stood in front of the big door of the great hall.
Max swallowed nervously. There would be so many students inside. Which house would he be sorted in ?? Would he like the house he would be sorted in ?? And what if he didn´t ?? It´s not like you could change your house right ?? And what if his house mates didn´t like him ?? All those questions lingered in his head. He looked around and saw a lot of happy faces. He was far away from home. Maybe being here wouldn´t be so bad he told himself.
His head snapped up when the professor called his name. Slowly he moved towards the chair that was in the middle of the great hall. After a second the sorting hat was on his head. It was speaking. Suddenly it announced the house he would be in. Slytherin. He heard a roar of approval from the Slytherin table. Maybe he would like it here after all.

First Day
There was only word that could describe what Lyn felt when her acceptance letter arrived at the Hale home: excitement. She remembered letting out a shout of glee, hugging her family tightly in her excitement (her younger sister was not too happy about that, complaining that she was getting bruised at the brutal strength of the hug, but she couldn't help it, she was just happy they all got accepted to where they wanted to go). She could still remember the short tour of the castle during the initial search for the best magical education. It had not been much in her personal opinion, but it did spark her innate curiosity to explore the entire castle grounds to its fullest.
Now as the train bustled along the tracks, however, Lyn couldn't help the anxiety bubbling in her gut. What if she couldn't grasp the lessons properly? What if her broom broke apart as she was learning to fly? What if she couldn't play Quidditch? What if she couldn't meet up with Beth during the year? What if she couldn't get sorted by the Sorting Hat and they told her to come back next year?
She hugged her bat doll closer, burying her chin into the soft head of the plush; it was always times like this that she was happy to have Rena the Bat by her side to calm her nerves. Taking a deep breath, she felt her thoughts subside. She felt her face relax into a small smile, the compartment view filling with the blur of trees as the train approached its final destination. Lyn felt in that moment her resolve return. Even if any of that happened, nothing was going to stop her from trying. Lyn Hale, Gryffindor
