I can't remember the exact year I got my first computer, but it was from my stepdad's workplace. I think they sold their old computers to the employees for really cheap or there was a raffle or something? I must've been between the ages of 8 and 10, so it was around 1998-2000.
Anyway, it had MS-DOS as the operating system. I can't remember much about how it all even worked, but it had a few games on it. Grand Prix Circuit and Duke Nukem are the only ones I remember and I played them SO MUCH. Oh, and I've been looking at pictures of those games online and I can't remember my games having any colors at all. Maybe my monitor was just all in black and white. o.o
My friend and her sister who were a couple of years younger than me had a computer too and when I told them what games I had, they were like... "Well, we just have this one really weird game." It was Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards. XD
I remembered some sort of maze game, but nothing like that, that sounds strange!
Oh Gosh yes, Number Munchers. I used to love that game. This is really bringing me back. XD
So do I! Thank you. :D
Mentioning the Prix game made me think of a game we played at my school when I was younger. Cross country USA. I remember these guys (the hitchhikers) very well. XD http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l/661818-crosscountry-usa-home-edition-dos-screenshot-encountering.png
My first computer was a C64. XD
The next one was Win 95. I still remember how slow internet used to be way back and chat rooms were the cool thing to visit lol
I remember being fascinated by my friend's internet. At the time we didn't have it at my place. XD I actually didn't get internet at my house until I was around 13-15.
My first computer was a Commodore 64. We had all the peripherals for it, even a modem, but i don't know why because there wasn't much of an internet to speak of yet and we weren't 1337-hacker enough to use it to connect to anything. But it was neat because it was the external phone cradle kind like from War Games. And we had so many game cartridges for it. It was great.
My first IBM was a 486 running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and connecting to AOL with a 9600 bps modem. I remember that at the time, i had this supernerd friend at school who talked about how someday we'd have 56k modems and i was like pshhh and a flying car in my driveway, right?
I miss the sound of a dial-up modem. Not the slowness, of course, nor the AOHell, nor the continual disconnections and futile attempts to reconnect, but the futuristic cacophony of the modem handshake...ah, memories. (And yes, obviously, i'm an 80s kid.)
I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only person who started out with a C64. My dad was (and still is) a computer technician, so he was very much up on all the latest platforms, and that was the first one I remember playing on when I was little. He always encouraged me to learn everything about each new computer we got after that. For a long time, all my new computers were frankenputers he built, and my most recent one is one I've modified with help from a friend.
I remember this one game for the C64 that was... maybe it was a penguin? It was a little thing on a platform that pushed letters into a truck below. That and F1 racing were my jam.
(Did anyone else learn to type with Mario Teaches Typing, though? I think that came out with Windows 3.1... I was so good at that game.)
" Okay, so you’ve made some bad decisions. You’ve hurt people. You’ve hurt yourself. You’ve stumbled through life from one self-inflicted disaster to the next without anything even approaching a plan. To which I say: welcome aboard. Maybe you’re not good... but you’re sure as hell good enough. "
Oh gosh I remember Mario Teaches Typing. When my parents were searching for some typing software for me, I remember wanting it, but they said no because it was too "video game" like or something.
I hated math, still do, but I loved number munchers. XD
We actually did have a computer when I was really, really young. I remember in high school seeing the giant floppy disks for it. The only game I remember for it was this one wizard game though, and only because when I was in middle school/high school I remember seeing the giant floppy disk for it.
I'm thinking it might of been a 486 or something since it would of been purchased late 80s/early 90s? By the time I remember our dad getting us a computer when I was 10, we no longer had that computer since it was so outdated and I think my dad threw it out.
It was such a bizarre little game, and it really was very video game-y. Typing correctly and quickly got Mario through the level. Typing poorly or incorrectly... well, it is a Mario game. XD

All of this old school talk makes me want to do research lol. My first um actually laptop isn't as cool as you guys older stuff. Although oldest computer I've ever played on ran windows 95.
You're still welcome in our little nostalgia party. ^_^
Yeah but still. XD The Mavis Beacon one I had, had a bunch of fun minigames in it too. I also remember Little Howie (The Bear, voiced by Howie Mandel. I think it was Little Howie's Great Word Adventure) CD that came with the computer.
Yay thank you! :3 My husband had a IBM. :o Old eh.
Sheesh no clue on some of the games mentioned. :| Uh.. I loved pajama Sam, anyone know of him? xD
It's interesting to note that some of these old machines were considered top of the line in their day. The C64 was a powerhouse in the early 80s when it was popular, and it sported a "massive" 64kb of RAM.
I actually never played the Mavis games, though I saw them on the shelves a lot!
Also, I found the game for the C64 that I could never recall!

I know of him, but never played the games. I played some of the Jumpstart ones though.
Yeah, I love seeing old articles for the computers with the "massive" amounts of memory. X3 As others have said, we really have come far from there, but you know, we had to start somewhere, right?
Jumpstart.. Had no idea. o-o
Lol these smilies ehh ughlee.
I think the only one I had was the Jumpstart 5th grade one. XD
No clue. But I remember Sam loving french fries or he helped someone who loved french fries, and I would keep restarting the game just to eat the fries LOL.
The first computer I ever experienced was a Compaq my dad bought when I was about six with Windows 3.1. I used to like playing Minesweeper which I was damn good at and Interactive storybook games on it.
My first personal computer I'm pretty sure was this small grey used laptop my dad got me. I wanna say it was a Toshiba, but I don't recall for sure. I believe it ran Windows 95 or 98. By this time I'd become interested in the internet so I was at least 13 and the first several years of my internet life was spent on AOL. Or as I like to call it AOHELL. XD
I noticed someone mentioned Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, I remember that software. My dad had it and had me use it to learn to type.
Our first computer was a Windows 98. It was a gift for us when we were in elementary school (aka middle school). My dad claimed it was his computer and we never got it for homework. The person who bought it for us regretted buying the computer. My dad has a good paying job, there's no reason why he couldn't afford to buy a computer.
P.S. We also had Microsoft Encarta.
