Also support an option for "other"
I'm fairly sure "none" was originally intended to accommodate those not wishing to reveal personal information to anonymous people on the internet. That would explain why it shows up as blank.
I'm in support of an "other" option.
can this be moved to the main S&I? This suggestion isn't about avatars, it's about the gender on profiles.
Yes, of course! Moving :)
I support the "other" option - it's definitely needed badly, but hell no to the pronoun bit lol.

Ah, that makes sense. Maybe they could change "none" to actually say none on profiles and add another option for "do not display" that would make it blank?
I definitely support more gender options.

I support more gender options but I agree that being specific about them or pronouns could get a little tricky. Male, female, non-binary, other, and none, would be nice though. Pronouns should just stay gender neutral throughout, imo. Customizing is a nice thought but I think it would more easily lead to people being rude to each other than the gender options would.
thank you for making this thread. i'm definitely supporting the "type your own gender" option, despite the views of others in the thread so far.
Like that idea. Wouldn't want to lose the none option.
another site example that pulls this off pretty well is furvilla, they have a decent size dropdown for gender AND an other/unspecified option!
I think the best option is to just be like "Gender:" and a text box to type your own description. So you could type "male" or "female" or whatever the heck you want. Or leave it blank.
Sure, people might use that to mock or whatever. But like, it will just show up on their profile, and if they wanna advertise to the world that that's the kinda person they are, oh well. For instance, people can write in their forum signature "I believe there are only two genders" and sure others might get upset, but that says more about who they are than anyone else, and if you really dislike that, then it tells you who to block /shrugs
So I guess I don't agree with any arguments against just having it be "type in your own thing"

I would love a fill-in-your-own gender option! I don't see who would use it for mockery except trolls, which are rare and are typically ousted of Subeta really quickly.
I think an "other" category would suffice if it was to be added. If someone has unique pronouns they wish to be referred by, they can include that on their profile. I don't know if many people use the addon that shows their gender on their profile anyways though, since I always personally preferred the privacy of having my status removed from my profile but not my friends list.
I support this, I am all for custom gender. So everybody wanting to express their gender and let people know has the ability to do so. And whoever wants to use the option not to express their gender, but typing in things like "robot", "kumos" or "pirate" can do so in my opinion without offending anyone. Personal choice of how much to reveal. Or how to present yourself.
Also wouldn't mind an optional pronoun question, but that one shouldn't come up on profiles by default in my opinion. Like I really, really don't care what pronouns other users use for me here. I wouldn't like to have to fill out that field. It would make me feel uncomfortable.

I agree with Bug and Orc, and think a custom gender box and pronoun field would be nice additions and there is no reason for either to be mandatory.
I think it would be nice if pronouns populated in the username popup, and I think that if people want to be reactionary and mock gender that is completely on them, but it isn't a reason to not allow people the opportunity to present as they choose. Modding is only really needed if they purposefully misgender others, imo.
I mean fb has custom gender options and I don't think I've seen anyone deride that functionality except for right around when it was released. Subeta has a smaller userbase, and tended, ime back when I used the site regularly, to be more LGBT+ friendly than the rest of the internet.
Failing that though at least the inclusion of an Other selection would be a nice gesture.
Just wrote some code to add an "Other" option.
Stay tuned! It will go live with everything else for tomorrow's sprint. (If you're not part of the siteupdate ping group, join it here so you get the ping when Amber and I do our weekly sprints!)
