"Hello, Professor Mathers. I'm Beth Hale. I can't wait for my first Potions lesson. Do you have any advice on how to prepare for class?"

whispers to Poppy "I've also been wondering who are the Head of Houses."

"I bet she's one, she seems like she runs a tight ship. I'd like to know who's getting the Headmaster spot too," Poppy murmurs to Beth. She muses that the faculty must be just as curious as the students about the new blood, at least.

"Professor Mathers seems to have what it takes to be a Head of House. I was afraid to ask her about the Heads of House....just in case she was my Head of House. That would be a terrible thing to forget. We'll find out soon enough who's getting the Headmaster spot. I just wish we knew already who our Headmaster/mistress will be."

"That's why I asked her about all of them. I hear rumors that we'll have a woman in charge. Someone younger than the norm too. I wonder how she'll want to be addressed? Like formally with Professor or Headmaster or Headmistress? Or something entirely different?"

The professor watches the exchange for a moment, then clears her throat. "Some of the Heads of House are currently up for the Headmaster's position. I suppose if one of them wins, they'll have to fill the empty spot. The Deputy also needs to be appointed... So once all has been settled with the Headmaster spot, the others will be announced, I'm sure."

She then turns to Beth.

"Miss Hale, in order to excel in the first class, you'll need to bring your listening skills. I do not tolerate students who allow their mind to wander and then ask me to repeat the instructions once it's time to brew." She looks Beth up and down, then nods, seeming to have decided on something. She holds the tin up again. "Biscuit?"

" Yes, please." Beth grabs a biscuit from the tin and quickly takes a bite of it. "Mmm...this is delicious. Thank you, Professor."

"What do you like most about teaching Potions?"

whispers to Poppy "I don't know what to expect. Hogwarts will definitely be different."

"Meeting her made me curious about her class. I wonder what other kinds of people we'll meet here. Her shortbread is really good too."

Alexa looks up from her book as some of her housemates started whispering about the teacher's table. She was so engrossed in her reading that she hadn't even touched any of the delicious food set in front of them. "What about the teacher's table?"

The girl sitting next to her explained in a whisper, "That's Professor Mathers. She's the Potions Master." Alexa's eyes lit up in excitement. She'd been reading about potion-making recently and was eagerly awaiting their first potions lesson. She thanked the girl, shutting her book and rising from the table to rush over to the small gathering of students at the teacher's table.

When it was her turn to speak, she grinned and stepped a bit closer. "Good evening Professor Mathers, I'm Alexa Bristow. I'm very excited for your class; it's a pleasure to meet you!" Alexa practically bounced with energy as she clutched her book to her chest. "I was wondering if perhaps there was any reading in particular that you would recommend for a first-year student interested in learning more about potions? You see, my father is a Muggle chemist, and I've always wondered how potion-making compares."

Professor Mathers clears her throat. "My apologies. Your question was what, my dear? Oh, of course, what I enjoy most about teaching Potions... It takes a great deal more attention to detail when brewing Potions than it does subjects like Charms. I enjoy to see students become particularly successful at it. While charms can go wrong if you use the wrong wand movement or the wrong inflection in the incantation, there are a lot more steps to Potions that could go wrong. Too much or too little of an ingredient, the wrong number of stirs, and so on."

She nods at Alexa in acknowledgement and holds the tin up to her as well. "Miss Bristow, likewise. A Muggle chemist, you say? I've heard about those, but I've never taken the time to learn about them personally. If I might be so bold, are both your parents Muggles? If they are, you may find Healing at Home with Herbs by Phyllida Spore helpful, to see how healing with herbs may compare to Muggle remedies."

"Enough with boring them, Mathy!" Professor Deidra Morgan stomps in, caked in dirt as always. She pulls off her gloves and steals a biscuit from the tin. "I'm surprised ya'll are asking about school work and books. Tut! If it were me, I'd be asking about the castle and the grounds! Nothin' like 'em."

"Are you interested in Herbology as well then? Does the way ingredients are grown have an effect on the final potions they're in?"

"I see that the Herbology professor is here for my question, nice to meet you Professor Morgan."

Ya' need to identify your ingredients, don't ya'? That's why ya'll will be having your first lesson with me before you see ol' Mathy here."

Professor Mathers rolls her eyes at the excessive use of the name "Mathy".

"The quality of the ingredient definitely has an effect on the quality of the potion. For instance, ya' wouldn't want a draft made from mandrakes to be made with the whelps! Whoever you're trying to de-petrify may not wake up, Miss Blackwood."

"Potions is a class to be taken seriously. I can see how easily it is to make a mistake. I will definitely be reading my textbook more cautiously from now on."

Beth turns to Professor Morgan. "Good evening, Professor Morgan. I'm Beth Hale. What is your favorite place in Hogwarts?"

"Miss Hale, a pleasure!" Professor Morgan dons a huge grin. "Other than the greenhouses, you mean? The courtyards are a wonderful thing in the fall. If you're into books, like I can see Miss Bristow over here is, it's a lovely place to read. The lake in the summer is the place to be! It's when the giant squid is most active. He's a handsome beast, he is. Not magical at all, though, mind you."

"Professor Morgan, are there any spots you tend to avoid?" The castle and grounds are huge and magic is tricky after all, thinks Poppy.

Professor Morgan takes a seat at the teachers table and drops her gloves onto the table. "The docks and the forest. We've got a large population of acromantula in the forest. I'm not fond of spiders in the slightest, let alone giant ones. Mathy would tell ya' their venom is dead useful, but I'm not about to go risking my tail for it. The docks are just creepy, 'cept for when the first years are coming in."

Rose decides that now is a good time to chime in. "Hello Professor Morgan and Professor Mathers! My name is Rose Thorn. Professor Morgan, I'm quite excited to start Herbology! Could you give us a little hint as to what we'll be growing this year? I've read about a number of different magical plants in out textbook already, but I've only had experience growing common plants at home."

"Mathy" is such a strange but funny name, thinks Beth. She wonders what Poppy thinks about the name "Mathy".

Amanda has finally gained the courage to approach the newly arrived teachers after her disaterous encounter with Professor Valdez.

"Good Evening Professor Morgan and Professor Mathers. I am truly excited to start both of your classes. I feel like Herbology and Potions are really two classes that relate to each other. I am excited for that cross-curricular experience. I do have a question for both of you: Did you attend Hogwarts? If so, what house were you in? Also what were your favorite classes besides the ones you now currently teach?"

If she can get them to tell her what house they were in, that will give her some insight on the teacher's personality at least. Although we all know that the sorting hat can be tricky when placing people.
