i used to read a lot of fanfiction, but since i've gotten back into writing myself, i don't read quite as much. i'm also extremely picky, so i tend to follow specific writers rather than fandoms/ships, though i'm always on the lookout for recommendations.

i've also always thought it was funny that my fandoms are generally considered to be really terrible and kind of obscure (in a bad way), but the writers are absolutely fantastic.

that's how it sometimes goes. i found a very small segment of RPF with ungodly amazing writers and followed them through some fandoms. two became mentors of mine even.

small fandom is great, i love the community aspect of it and the level of interaction if you welcome it. it was so easy to stay a lurker in the bigger ones.

yeah, definitely. i've actually started avoiding the larger fandoms simply because i've grown so comfortable with the small community feel. it's really helped me develop as a writer and it's given me a good space to post my work. i never felt like i could contribute to the larger ones, which really put me down, so these little fandoms and their writers are actual gems haha.
