I've seen a lot of people just make up their own companion/story for it! I don't think you necessarily have to know the storyline - just that this companion is someone who travels with the Doctor (a man who has an expanse amount of knowledge but possesses a need for a deep emotional bond with a traveling companion) so the person/woman would just need to be someone who would be willing to be there for him & have an adventurous spirit!
