I agree with everything in the first post. Welcomes and Intros needs an overhaul and maybe a new title..and a subforum for returnees.
The name for all that is a Newbie Guide, and nearly 4 years ago, I was wondering why the heck there wasn't one. Kinda forgot about it till recently, when I finally noticed the influx from neo. Then I started wondering why there STILL isn't a guide given all the other ones that have been made; we seem to have a guide for everything EXCEPT Newbies. And what we do have is kinda scattered which makes it harder still for new users to get the info they need.
I had no problems lurking around and digging through forums and such to find the all the rules/faq pages, but not everyone will want/know to do that, and subsequently make mistakes or just leave. I also had my rl friend helping me through everything and answering any questions I had.
So yes, we really need a nice, tidy list with all those useful tidbits a new user would want/need to know to stay on this site; links to our scattered guides and rules/faq pages, little details like Caliph's Tomb is just like the neo game Pyramids only winnable(also might mention that you don't have to send the score if you lose any game), maybe slip in the Wizard's..hobby...just to name a couple.
I really think it would be best if staff did this, since it would be a better first impression, but given how busy they are currently and how many new users we've got coming in, we should just make one ourselves and get the info out there.....
I'll be over here hitting my head on the wall. THIS really should be on the forums, not tucked away on a pet page; though I appreciate the thought and effort that went into it. Pumpkins has the link in her forum signature and she does greet every new user who posts on W&I, but not everyone posts...I didn't.
A little something you might like to know, there's usually some lag at the beginning of most/all major events, and some features get a bit glitchy. Masq in particular has a history of being especially hard on the wardrobe system; though I think it will be better now since we've got the beta this time.
Y'know with the concept of it in mind, I actually REALLY like the idea of there being a "Welcome to Subeta FAQ" pet -- I feel like that's something that could not only inform newer users of ins and outs of the site, but it'd also be a great representation of how much some users (and some staff members) really invest/care about pets here.
Like, wow Subeta's freakin' welcome how to faq intro for new users is in over the top pet page how awesome is that? It could definitely be owned by an NPC (Sarah? Doesn't she currently run the walk-through thingy?) and something "interactiveish" to cover more basis on how things work on subeta.
Something to the extent of getting an event from an NPC "noticing" you're a new user-- "Hi I'm Sarah and welcome to Subeta! Why don't you come visit me at my [link]cottage on Veta lake![end link] so we can get better acquainted!" Which'll show them how the alert system works/tell them where Sarah (and her quests) are located! From there she can welcome them, give them their newbie pack (or tell them it's in their inventory and how to get there.. assuming there is one? I think there is...), giving them a low down on whatever she currently talks about (and a place to pick back up with if interest is lost/real life comes calling and so on).... and once the walkthrough is over, wow it's gotten so late and she really must get back to her quests! People are probably lined up around the block, oops! But y'know, her trust pet (who should have some easy to remember/reference name) knows subeta better than she does! If you'd like, just ask (look up) [pet name with link] for some guidence and I'm positive s/he'll be able to help you out!
And the pet page could, ultimately be a lot similar to the user run one-- only it's managed by staff/an NPC (not that the user is incapable but it's kinda... weird to have a pet owned by a user who could leave/take down the pet page at any time/etc linked to or referenced by staff) so content can be controlled and I'm sure our artists could do some fabulous artwork and whatnot for the profile in question c;
.. and said pet could also be linked somewhere on Sarah's quest page like "oh I'm sorry I'm super swamped with questers at the moment-- if you needed some help with something my trust pet [pet name + link] can help you out!".
I may or may not have thought about that too much. I also may or may not have almost posted this on the Hustler board |D
All of that sounds really amazing o0 Sadly, it also sounds like it would take a long time for staff to set up. I love the idea though; having it be an official/staff run thing would insure a good first impression for new users and insure the info is never lost because a user left.
I don't remember anything about a walkthrough or newbie pack when I first started. All I remember is lurking, lurking, not finding a guide, tracking down rules and faq pages, and doing only 5 of Sarah's quests before ditching her and switching to the Wizard for more sp. I just finished remedying that mistake today -_-
For now, just for the sake of getting the info out there and readily available for new users and returnees alike (since so much has changed in the past year alone), all the info needs to get on the forums asap. Along with links to all the other rules/faqs/etc that aren't on that pet's profile. So when a staff member (or 3) has the time to a more official version, everything is right there. One thing though, where exactly would we put it? W&I has pretty strict rules about who posts what on there and General Discussion doesn't seem like the right place.
Lol, I've been thinking about all this the past few days X) There's no such thing as thinking about something too much;some of us appreciate attention to details ;) Claimed a kiss on the 2015 Strains Tracking board during Survival I know just how you feel. I apologize for any spelling/grammar errors; I seem to be having a very hard time typing today.
