yep its by Diana Wynne Jones and there is also a sequel. I usually either love the book over the movie,vice versa but in this case, I love both so much equally. but the book fills in the gaps,and there are plot twists that explains the main character. I think you will love it too, i know its a very beloved book. sadly the author has passed away.
