Do you have a first letter or origin preference? Or based on a certain meaning?
No letter preference, but I'm hoping for something with a Greek origin. I'm hoping for something that can be shortened into something more modern (like how Loukas could be shortened into Luke), but it's not a necessity.
The first thing that comes to mind for me is there was a guy I knew in elementary school who was "Nikolaus" but we just called him Nick.
Hmmm... maybe!
I'm imagining that would be awesome as a Tony/Bruce (Avengers, MCU) or Tobias/Marco (Animorphs).
I keep up a busy writing schedule so no luck for me to work on either at the momentXD
Other than that maybe checking baby name sites that let you search by origin? I dunno... I'm really no good at naming other peoples' kids... ^^;
Wow, Animorphs. Those started coming out when I was in... 6th grade if I remember correctly. And I haven't read them since that. Talk about a blast from the past! lol [edit] 5th grade - I just Wiki'd the series and it began in 1996. I was 10, so 5th grade!
They started coming out when I was in fourth grade =D
I got back into the series a year or so agoXD
It engulfed me againXD
Hahaha XD I remember reading them and enjoying them? But then I got really, really bored because I felt like it jumped the shark pretty early on. The author had a great idea going but I think there were some pacing issues.
- Wow animorphs! Yeah, that was so grade school! I never actually read the books, but I briefly watched the TV show. I don't really remember much of it though.
The show was a HORRIBLE adaptation of the books. All the dark and complex storylines (such as Tobias' struggle to accept living life as a hawk or the Chee's backstory PLUS being pacifists and yet trying to help the Animorphs) were taken away.
The only good thing about the show is the theme songXD
It's one of those if you hear two or three times in a day it is stuck in your head for a weekXD
I, and others, are hoping for a better adaptation. Myself I want a good adaptation since my fiance doesn't read and I want to get him into the series >.<
- I imagine it was, because I remember the show being pretty awful to begin with, but then, shows based on books usually are pretty bad and horrible representations of the books. I think I have a few of the books collecting dust in the basement of my parents' house still. Pretty sure we at least have the one with the horse on the cover, cus my sisters and I were obsessed with anything with horses on it back in the day.
There's the usual 'not good' adaptation and then there's adaptation bad like 'Last Airbender' bad (luckily I'm not an Airbender fan so I didn't see that movie, but I hear that is one of the worst adaptation according to a lot of people).
The Unknown (I'm sure of the number, name I'm 99% certain of) is the one with the horse on the cover. I really enjoyed the twist at the ending though a good majority of Animorphs fans felt it was a let down. I am just too amused at the ending to be mad at itXD
- Haha, yeah, I am an Airbender fan, I knew the movie would be terrible, I didn't watch it until about 3 years after it came out cus it was on TV and I needed background noise while working on costumes. It was so bad, and the whole movie I just couldn't stop thinking how much Sokka looked like Tommy the original green power ranger! It was a decent movie (not a good movie) but as an adaptation it was AWFUL!
Oh man. My gf and I caught the tail end of the Airbender movie on tv a while back, and the like 2 minutes that we sat through were the most painful 2 minutes I've ever spent watching a movie. And that includes the few minutes of Twilight that I had to deal with once (same situation; it was on tv and ending a few minutes into the time slot when the next movie was going to be on.)
Another book-to-movie that really didn't work was Howl's Moving Castle. I'm hugely in the minority of that, but I don't think very many people who have seen the movie have also read the book. It's very LOOSELY based on the book. If you take it as its own thing, it's not bad - but it's not the book I grew up reading once a year biased!
- You know what did a GREAT job being a book adaptation? The Last Unicorn. It's probably one of the few adaptations that I've seen that really doesn't change the meaning of the book, or cut out important plot bits. I've never read the book Howl's Moving Castle is based on, but I didn't really like the film either. Although, if I had read the book, I would probably be forgiving of it. A lot of Miazaki films are based on books, and then changed so that they kind of sort of really aren't at all, just like the basic ideas are there, but everything else is different.
I haven't read The Last Unicorn (I'm a horrible person. I realize this) but I LOVE the movie. I remember checking it out from the county library (because I grew up in a podunk town) when I was really really little and loving every minute of it... to the point where my mother was getting Concerned (that I liked it too much I guess) and we started going to the other library nearby that didn't check out movies XD I really should get my hands on a copy of the book. I hadn't even thought about it!
Diana Wynne Jones, who wrote Howl's Moving Castle, is my favorite author of all time. She's astonishing. The things she does with words make me giddy. She's about 95% of the reason why I write. She passed away a few years ago and whenever I think about it I cry unmanly tears. (And now I play with the cat for a few minutes to try to avoid sads.)
- Yeah, it's a good book too. My sister met P.S Beagle at the 30th anniversary celebration remastered theatre screening. She cried when he asked how long she had had our old well loved VHS of the movie. I got her the anniversary edition graphic novel of it for mer birthday this year. :)
hugs At least she still lives on in her works! Strive for that! Don't leave this world without leaving something behind!
I haven't seen much of any Twilight movie but I read the books. They're amusing (so I was really angry when The Host didn't have any of the amusement of Twilight).
Diana died? Damn >.<
So that's basically how well Nick adapted Animorphs. I highly recommend the books as what YA fiction should aim for: treating teens like adults and not being afraid to go really dark.
As for my three movie adaptations that I love hands down: Shutter Island, original black and white version of Lord of the Flies, AND Watchmen.
All others I like but can never help but complain about the differences from book to movieXD
Ahhh that's super cool!! And what a great opportunity to have had! And ah man I am buying the blu-ray and the book when I make my next Amazon order (I have a gift card from Christmas!)
I think my favorite movie-adaptation of a pre-existing thing is actually the first Silent Hill movie. Which is hilarious because when it came out, my friends and I ripped it apart for not following the first game well at all. But after a while it mellowed into a general feeling of "you know, that actually wasn't too bad and captured the feel of things better than we wanted to admit at the time" - also the second movie (Silent Hill 3D Revelations) came out and was absolute crap... which makes the first one seem that much better x_x It's not the best game-to-movie adaptation, but I legitimately and unironically love it.
As far as book-to-movie adaptations that are actually good, I can't think of any off the top of my head - not counting comic/manga-to-movie, anyway.
First and Second Silent Hill movies I have a love/hate relationship with. I like both ones but I can't help look at them and think about how offtrack from the games they are. I think the music is what helps me like them a little bit more as it seems to be mostly taken from the gamesXD
Same thing with the DOOM movie. I love it as it has all the pseudo-science I love plus I really started noticing Karl Urban after it. But as a fan of the first two games...arg >.<
