The reason for why leeches can be useful is because with the way the cap works, your pet cannot go beyond 22000 combined health, attack, defense, and speed. For example, you can have 8000/5000/5000/4000 or 7500/7000/4500/3000 or 5500/5500/5500/5500 as they all add up to 22000, but you can't have something like 6000/6000/6000/6000 as that adds up to 24000. With that in mind, at the endgame, you will have to plan out your stat distribution carefully. If you've ever played Pokemon competitively, think of it as being like how some EV allocations are better than others, but not quite as drastic.

I'm training my first battle pet Konosku, and looking at his current stats, should I consider going for some sort of build or something?

I've been training him up evenly for now, though I don't know too much about "optimal builds", or even if there's a good time to start going for that. I know that speed and defense were tweaked recently-ish, but how important are they now?

I do agree about the imp challenger situation. A big shortage of challengers and a lot of users who are nearing (if not already there) the imp level difficulty.

- Generally it's about at those stats that people start focusing on different builds. You have to kind of decide what is important to you, speed and defence are important to help prevent critical hits, but defence overall seems to be a bit more useful. The "classic" build is generally around 8000-9000HP, 5000-7000str, 4000-5000 def, and 2000-3000 spd. Some people go for some radical builds, like super high defence and 0 spd, or lots of strength, but this typically is on secondary pets, as a lot of these builds are "new" since the cap introduction and haven't had much testing for viability in the BC.

<3<3<3 the mecha has been fun so far. It helped me get a sixth win on chase, and I might try prod again this weekend. I dunno if it'll be useful for him, but it certainly can't hurt. we'll see how masochistic I'm feeling. :P
