I played the game in the library and succeeded, first try, and the green piece of nightmare fuel showed up. I clicked on it and got the message about bringing it back to Ian, but there's no way to return to the main hallway from the library and when I click on the Skelly Manor from the news page it just puts me back in the library.

I've cleared my cache, so that's not it. The only thing I can think of is that I let the ball drop off-screen after I cleared all the books and then refreshed.
