I got lost a bunch of times, but I went back and read all the posts on the thread and caught up pretty quick. It was super interesting. Thank you so much for this and all your hard work. I had a hard enough time trying to keep up with the gifts and thread, and there you are doing it all. That's insane!

A couple questions though: Val is Ren and Bill's son, right? That would mean Val made the deal with the gods in the future? And the flashbacks weren't actually flash"backs"?

I don't completely understand how the curse would affect the Aeternali we met, assuming the deal was made further down the timeline.

Unless I'm all kinds of wrong...

It's been tons of fun! I'm very sorry that I wasn't able to help the last few days, but I'm very happy to have been a part of it all. I hope that it's all going to work out as planned, without the Aeternali turning into wraiths. Maybe Valaire will have an opportunity to heal up regularly, or he can find peace at the end. EDIT: I see it was who wrote it all! I loved it! :) I see I missed some dialogues, so I'll try to read back when I can.

Answering your question clearly.

Val is indeed Bill and Ren's son!

The timeline we started with was timeline A, where in the far future (in 2254, to be more precise), Val finds a way to summon the gods and makes its deal with them. The flashbacks of Kali and Val happened before, during and after the deal was settled.

However, as Kali wanted out of the deal, Val decided to sell the souls of "whoever brought them into this world". This was NEVER STATED IN THE PLOT, but he deliberately cursed their parents. Because to the gods, only the life of time travelers were worth it. The entire deal to the gods was just...never explained in full. But it was a retroactive curse that has been applied to the Aeternali living in the past.

Valaire assumed that because he targetted people that were long dead, he would have gotten away with it. That was wrong. He managed to curse his father and his friends. Bill, his other father, was not cursed, because he had no time-travel powers. Only the power of eating absolutely everything.

Kinnon, following something Kali said in the second flashback (Kali pointed to Valaire that the future was not set in stone and to not give up on a cure) realized that it didn't take much to change the future by taking another series of decisions. Which is what he did. He didn't want to go and involve Valaire that much because he was bitter. Kinnon is not a happy guy.

Using the four people that mediated (Dresden, which is Kinnon's wife, Becky, who was technically the last person who joined the team, and the youngest member of the clan, Ludovi, the guy whom the disaster started with and Renaud, Valaire's father), they managed to go and to change the future enough to create a timeline B, which overwrote timeline A. Timeline A no longer exist, so the future kids/wraiths are totally unaware of what happened...

As for people in the present, Renaud erased their memories, Men In Black style.

VALAIRE GOT HIS LESSON, TRUST ME.

He's an Egan-Gary, he doesn't forget as easily as other people...as people noticed from the epilogue. He remembers more than he should. But for now, his memories only manifest themselves as flashes in his dreams.
